Bookish (And not so Bookish) Thoughts – January 22nd, 2015

Posted January 22, 2015 by Lisa Mandina in / 17 Comments

Well, things have led to me not getting my book finished in time to post a review today like I’d hoped, so I searched Thursday book memes online and found this one that Bookishly Boisterous hosts.  It sounded like an easy one for me to do today so that I can keep up with my goal of a post every day this year.  Basically it is just to allow you the blogger to post whatever random thoughts you might have for the day, related to books or not.  So, that’s a good one for me today.

1.  Last night I went to an early showing of the movie The DUFF.  It’s a book I’ve wanted to read for awhile, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.  The movie was really good.  It started out and I was a bit worried it might be kind of lame, but then it got pretty funny, and there was even a part where I just understood completely what the main character was going through and had tears streaming down my face.  I highly recommend seeing this one for a fun teen movie.  It touches on things like cyberbullying, and just being yourself.  There’s a locker room scene that was hilarious, as well as a scene where the “Duff” is teaching the “Jock” how to kiss.  I still smile when I think of those parts.

2.  I really need to start exercising.  Several years ago I lost a ton of weight by walking, and also doing Weight Watchers.  Since then I’ve tried going back to WW, but they changed the program and now it really doesn’t work for me.  There is a park I like to go walk at, and the weather has actually been pretty decent for January here, like in the 50s and 60s.  But on the days that I have had time to go walk, I’ve instead cleaned house, something I don’t like to do anyway.  Or been lazy and said I didn’t want to get dressed for the day.  All my clothes are too tight, and I refuse to buy any bigger sizes than the sizes I have.  So yeah.

3.  I joined eHarmony this week.  I should say rejoined, because years and years ago when it first came out I belonged for awhile.  It’s so expensive though!  I’m going to try it without paying so that I can try not to be shallow about looks like I think is the problem when I try sites like  So, wish me luck on that.

4.  I had to go back to working part time at my bookstore job.  Which don’t get me wrong, if I have to work part time, it is the perfect place to work.  But last year this time I went seasonal.  And it was so nice to not have to go work anywhere else.  To be able to just go home and watch tv, read, etc.  I have to work tonight is why this is on my mind, because it means that I won’t have time to read my book like I want to.

5.  I’m starting the editing process of the novel I wrote during NaNoWriMo last November.  I’ve gotten some good feedback from two people, one of them was my writing partner.

6.  I love YA Book Exhange, but.  The issue is that I can’t trade with a lot of the people because I don’t have anything new enough to trade with them for the newer ARCs.  And that makes me sad.  Especially when they got an ARC that they didn’t want, or they get two of them.  Or it makes me jealous? Both?

7.  I’m so excited that this week it was announced that NKOTB would be touring again, and they’re coming to my city in May!  American Express pre-sale tickets are tomorrow.  Hoping to get some good seats.  I always go with one of my cousins and now a friend of mine that I didn’t know was a fan until last year.  And, the announcement that Jonathan Knight and his partner/boyfriend are going to be on the Amazing Race next season was exciting as well!

8.  I’m missing going to the movies as much as I used to.  I had a really good friend, whose mother worked for AMC corporate, and so she had free passes.  And we went almost every Friday, often seeing 2 movies at a time!  I’ve had to learn to think which movies do I really want to pay to go see in a theater, and which ones can I wait till I can get them at Redbox.

Hmm, I think that might be all of the thoughts I have to share today.  Any random thoughts you’d like to share with me?

  1. I need to start regularly exercising as well. With work I just feel like I have zero time to do anything, including blogging. It makes me sad! Good luck with eharmony! I'm too chicken to do anything like that. I love going to the movies but they have gotten outrageously expensive. $11 to see a movie, not including food? Insane. I used to go every weekend as well but I can't afford that anymore. I only go to ones that I can't live without seeing right when it comes out (Hunger Games, Divergent, etc).

    • I feel the same way with time. I want to just be home and relaxing if I'm not working. I am signed up for eharmony, but who knows if I'll ever actually try to go out on a date with anyone. I'm such a movie buff it is hard to not go see them in the theater. Thanks for visiting!

  2. So many points you make I can agree with: I want to start running again but the ice and snow is preventing me (and the cold!). Going to the movies is SO expensive and it sucks when the movie you do decide to watch sucks!
    Thanks for sharing today!

    • I usually don't feel like a movie sucks, I'm almost always entertained enough. But that's me, maybe I'm easily entertained by movies, even if not so much by books it seems. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Exercising regularly is a challenge for me, too. I did well for a while…and then got lazy. I quite the gym after they moved it and I had to get on the freeway to go. Yes, excuses.

I even have an exercise bike in my room that I rarely use. Why do I sabotage myself? LOL

Thanks for visiting my blog, and good luck with your goals.

  4. Wait, NKOTB is touring again?! I'm totally going to have see them if they will be performing near here.

I'm really trying to exercise regularly but it's so hard when life gets busy. I loved Weight Watchers and am sad to hear that the program changed.

    • Oh yeah, they've been back touring for a few years now! This will be the 3rd time I've seen them in the last 5 years I think. Weight Watchers is still doing points, but they've changed them to where they are harder to figure. I'm sure it is supposed to be better, but if it worked for me the other way, I wish I could still do that on my phone app.

  5. This is a cool meme. I don't do memes anymore, but this one actually seems like really cool and I liked your post 😀
Good Luck with eHarmony! Tell me how you like it. I TOTALLY know what you mean about those sites making you feel shallow about looks though. It's hard because you have to be attracted to the person, but it's like…you get attracted to someone mostly after meeting them too—even though an initial attraction seems necessary. it's like mehhh yeah. lol. AND YES it's SO expensive! I want to join this year, as I really want to find like a quality relationship, but that monthly cost…phew that's a lotta dough. kind of makes me feel like i'm buying a boyfriend or something lol. I know tons of relationships and marriages have succeeded from online dating though. and i have tried it, just nothing has stuck. so we'll see. I'd love if you kept me / us posted. I am the type that loves reading personal stuff on book blogs, i share personal things too..though lately more than when I first started blogging.
Hope you have a great weekend Lisa 😀

    • Well, I'll try to maybe do either Sunday posts, or more of this kind so that I can keep you updated on the eharmony. So far I'm communicating without the pictures, well as much as you can without paying. I still do certain memes. They're fun I think, but that's the main thing for now. It gives me something else to do. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. It seems like you are getting back into the swing of the work life once again xD I like the idea of you having a nice place to part time work if you have to work somewhere. I do think it can be good to be out of the house more. I like the sound of the book Duff and will be reading it soon!

    • Yeah, that's why it's so hard to completely give up the bookstore job when I need a break. It is the perfect part time job for me. Glad you found a new book! Thanks for visiting!
