Top Ten Tuesday: Top 10 2014 Releases That I Meant to Read, But Didn’t Get To

Posted January 13, 2015 by Lisa Mandina in / 58 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is sponsored by The Broke and The Bookish.  So many books on my TBR list, and then new books pop up, so it seems this happens every year, I miss out on books I really wanted to read, this topic for Top 10 was a perfect one!  As I always do I will post them in no particular order.

1.  The Strange Maid (The United States of Asgard #2) by Tessa Gratton

I started this right before BEA, but then didn’t quite get into it with how busy I was during BEA, so now I really need to pick it up and read it.

2.  Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King

This is one that I’d really been looking forward to.  My mom bought it for her Nook, and so she didn’t have a hard copy to pass on to me when she was done.  So I haven’t read it yet.  I do need to go ahead and buy a hard copy though, as we own almost every other one of his books. The sad thing is that I have read the book he published a few months after this one, Revival.

3.  Talon by Julie Kagawa

This was one I had wanted to get so bad at BEA, but didn’t get a copy of. Then, I just never got around to picking up a copy to read.

4.  Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this at BEA, even though I didn’t get to see the author in person.  But I didn’t quite get around to reading it.  It is a goal for my TBR Pile Challenge this year.

5.  The Infinite Sea (The Fifth Wave #2) by Rick Yancey

I was late getting around to reading the first one, but figured I’d be able to pick the 2nd one up almost right after and read on.  I didn’t do it.

6.  Rooms by Lauren Oliver

This is another book I really wanted to get at BEA, but missed out on several chances to get it.

7.  Fiendish  by Brenna Yovanoff

My e-galley of it expired before I could get to it. Then I bought it in time to go see the author in November, and still haven’t had time to fit it in!

8.  Sinner (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #4) by Maggie Stiefvater

I got this one at BEA, but ended up choosing to read Blue Lily, Lily Blue before I picked this up. So it is still sitting on my shelf.  Although actually I ordered one online that had a special cover that Maggie had drawn herself.

9.  Torn Away by Jennifer Brown

I have enjoyed other books by this author and I got an e-galley of this, but never got it read.

10.  Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

I got an ARC of this at the beginning of the year, and then somehow never got around to picking it up.  I’ve got to get to it soon!

So there are many more I need to get to that I missed last year.  How about you, what books did you not get read in 2014?

  1. Awesome List!! I picked up a copy of Sinner at BEA this year as well and just finished reading Blue Lily. I still have to read the first three books in this series. I wanted to pick up a copy of Rooms at BEA, but I was in line for something else and it didn't work out. I'm very interested in seeing what her adult book will be like, so I included it on my TTT this week as well.

I've read Jennifer Brown's Bitter End and thought it was very well written. Torn Away is also on my TBR list.

I hope you find time for all of these books this year. Here is my TTT: http://www.jacquesbooknook.blogspot.com/2015/01/top-ten-tuesday-2014-releases-i-meant.html

    • I have read the first three for Sinner, but I ended up putting Blue Lily, Lily Blue before it, so didn't get it read. I was never able to get over to the line for Rooms. Happened with several books I wanted at BEA. I've read Hate List by Jennifer Brown and really thought it was good, so am interested in her other books, plus she lives where I do! Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Oh, I never read Sinner either. I don't know why. I'll get to it. Talons and Afterworlds made my list, too. I feel bad that I didn't make time for them. Rooms was not as good as I hoped it would be, neither was Cruel Beauty. I hope you get to read these soon!

I actually did get around to two on this list! (Yay! I no longer feel like a complete failure despite the skyscraper of unread 2014 releases on my TBR.) Unfortunately, neither Fiendish nor Cruel Beauty wound up being my cup of tea, but I've seen a lot of people loving the latter, so best of luck! 🙂

  4. I read the Infinite Sea. It was good. I think there is going to be a third book. I've read and enjoyed some Julie Kagawa but this one you listed seems to be on a lot of lists. I might have to check it out. The Strange Maid sounds good too. Thanks for posting your list and the visit.

    • I'm not normally a dragon book person, but have loved Kagawa's other books, so figured I'd want to read it. I hope I can get to them this year as well! Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I definitely want to read # 5 on your list!!! I loved the first one, I just haven't gotten around to getting the second! Also, Maze Runner is another series I know I've missed out on!

    • Same here, loved The 5th Wave, can't wait to read on in the series! You should definitely read on in The Maze Runner series, it is pretty good. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. Awesome picks here Lisa^^ I also wanted to read Cruel Beauty, Talon, Fiendish, and Afterworlds last year but it seems that there are always too many books for the amount of time to be had to read them hehe! I hope you get to read all of these asap in the new year! Happy reading xx

I can't wait to read Cruel Beauty and Talon 😀 I also need to get to all of Maggie Stiefvater's books.
Hope you get a chance to read and enjoy these soon!!

OMG this weeks topic is terrible – I have so many unread books already and now I want to add half of yours to my stacks!! There are some very nice looking books on there!
    Lynn 😀

    • Yeah, I keep forgetting about it, which is probably why I never got it read last year. I need to just get it out and put it on the top of my pile so I read it soon. Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Talon is fantastic! I read it the other week and I loved it, I hope you do too! You're in for a treat with Cruel Beauty! 🙂
I meant to get around to The Infinite Sea last year too, but I forgot all about it.
    Happy reading!

    • Great! Glad to hear a good review of it, I don't yet have a copy, but should from the YA Book Exchange soon! Glad to see I'm not the only one with Infinite Sea. Thanks for stopping by!

    • I've got the new book by the author as an egalley, but was told I didn't have to read one before the other, so that is good. I'm hoping to not need a refresher as I don't really have the time. Thanks so much for stopping by!

  10. Great picks! I have yet to pick up a copy of Afterworlds as well, which is surprising because I absolutely love Scott Westerfeld's Uglies series. I totally forgot about Rooms by Lauren Oliver! I have yet to read something by her that I didn't like; her novels are just so good. I hope you get to these this year! 🙂

    • I loved the Uglies series as well, and had to get a copy of Afterworlds as an ARC at BEA, so it's shame on me for not reading it yet. I hope I can fit them in as well. Thanks for visiting me!

  11. Cruel Beauty was one of my favs of 2014, you definitely need to read it soon! I was shocked how much I liked Talon too, since it's definitely not a read I would normally go for. A lot of these I'd like to get around to reading soon, too…gah! so many books, so little time.

    • I have got to get both done. I'm normally not a dragon story person, but I love the author of Talon, so have to give it a try. And you're right, so many books, and so not enough time. Thanks for stopping by!

  12. I actually read quite a few of these, but I haven't yet picked up The Infinite Sea or Torn Away. I loved The Fifth Wave, but it's been so long since I've read it that I guess I was afraid of the fact that I forgot everything.

    • So many books to try to get to, and authors keep writing more that I need to read this year! I guess that's a pretty good problem to have in the whole scope of things. Thanks for stopping by!

  13. Torn Away was really emotional and awesome. I read it in one sitting. I also really wanted to read Rooms… I completely forgot about it!!! Afterworlds sounds good too… I saw it at the bookstore and almost bought it, but then I looked at the size of it…. SOOOOO long. It scared me away bc it looks time consuming 🙂

Thanks for stopping by My TTT

    • Ah, now I am so mad for not reading Torn Away right away! The size of Afterworlds is probably one reason I didn't get to it, too many other books to read for reviews or challenges. But I have to get to it! Thanks for stopping by!

    • I keep looking at my actual physical TBR pile, then seeing the list of books I need to read as egalleys before they expire, and I get a little bit sad. But yet I don't stop downloading the egalleys.

  14. A lot of books on your list are also books I didn't get to read in 2014! I'm curious about Talon and Afterworlds let me know what you think of it when you get around to reading it!
