Weekly Wrap-Up #155 – February 4th, 2024

Sunday was a bit warmer and we were looking forward to a warmer week overall! Another Chiefs game that we didn’t know if it would be the end of our season or take us to another Super Bowl. But it was an awesome game and we are once ahead headed to the Super Bowl!

Monday started off with a quick staff meeting before school for anyone who wanted to know more about the incident last Friday. Found out one of our admin had been knocked unconscious for a few minutes I guess. Heard that it was only bullets that actually fell out of a bag, and the head custodian showed me a picture later. It was kind of busy being alone with my clerk out all week, but I kept the doors closed instead of leaving them wide open. That cut down on the noise, and I think also cut down on students just “stopping by” to get snacks that my clerk keeps in her desk for them.

Tuesday was pretty calm in the library for the most part. I did get a chance to talk to the new principal about if there was any way possible to get a sub or some help on the days my clerk is gone when she’s gone this long. My guess is she’s not coming back for a while. I told him about her absences and how I often end up with weeks at a time by myself every year I’ve been there so far. He said he’d look into seeing about getting some help for me if he could. I went out to dinner with my indie author friend who I assisted at the Flirty in KC convention Saturday morning.

Wednesday was another mostly calm day at school fortunately. I was able to get a new display put up, but I didn’t want to take pictures yet since I had a few things to fix up with some border I’d ordered on Amazon that didn’t arrive till I got home from work. I also went and got my hair colored and cut. I made a couple signs at school to put up if I have to leave my desk to use the restroom or something, as well as one for lunch, not that it stops anyone from coming to bug me when I’m just sitting at my desk.

Thursday was kind of miserable at times. I tried putting the lunch sign in the door, but it didn’t work. I even had one student come in and when I asked her what she needed, I mean she was already there, and she didn’t answer me, I asked her to come back later since we were closed for my lunch. She started asking me why I was talking to her and muttering to her friend that was with her about how she didn’t know who that teacher was that was talking to her. I’m just so tired of the attitude and all I’m dealing with, after I walked her out of the library to meet up with one of our instructional assistants who deal with students who have those types of issues, I couldn’t stop the tears and had to go stand in the library back office area. I was very tempted to take a mental health day on Friday.

So the border I ordered to do my display with came in, and it wasn’t at all what I thought. It was small one foot adhesive sections, four to a page. Not the roll of bulletin border you normally find. So I ordered another one online that I saw in the pictures it was a roll. Not as good of a deal, but I guess that’s what the deal was. I also made some more stickers from other images that I bought the downloads of. Here at least for now is a picture of the poster I made and the stickers I made to set out for my students.

Friday I got both good and bad news. First, the bad news, my clerk is going to get FMLA, good news for her, but bad for me as she is taking all of it at once and will be gone till April 30th. Good news is that my new principal has found out that I can look to get a sub to cover her for as much of that time as I can find someone for! Oh, yeah, we had another student with a gun in their backpack at school too. Someone in the community called and gave a tip to the school about it. He supposedly had it because he’s maybe worried about something after he leaves school, not for anything at school. And while I did get another border delivered from Amazon yesterday, I didn’t add it to my Valentine’s Day display, final picture below. I also put up a Black History Month display as well.

Saturday was an exciting day because I got to be the assistant to my author friend Michelle Sodaro at the Flirty in Kansas City book convention. I told myself I wouldn’t buy any books, but I did end up buying some, oops! It was a cloudy day, and a long day for a Saturday, so when I got home after 5 pm I just ate some dinner, my first meal all day, and then finished this post up and watched some tv. Here’s a picture of my friend at her table. I had to cover over the two authors’ banners on either side of her because they don’t match her type of books!

Books Finished

First one was the second audiobook in the read along for the WTZ series. I finished a little quicker than expected, since I won’t be reviewing till mid-Feburary. Second was an e-galley review for the author’s review team, and posted it on Wednesday. Third was another e-galley I posted the review yesterday.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

I don’t think the publisher reached out to me about this one ahead of time, and I don’t think I requested it. While it sounds like it might be good, I don’t know that I’ll have time to get to it. So for now it’s going to probably just go to my giveaway pile.

Audiobooks:

None

Bookish Stuff:

As I mentioned, I tried not to go around and pick up a lot of stuff at the Flirty in Kansas City convention because then I wanted to buy lots of books! Here are the few stickers and things I got as I wandered or some of the authors came to my friend’s table.

E-galleys:

None

Free Ebooks:

I have enjoyed another book by this author, although I also had one DNF by her. However this one sounds good, so I got it for free.

Physical books:

First are four of the five books I purchased at Flirty in KC. The one in front is an anthology that about 10 or so of the authors submitted short stories for. I also purchased one from the author of the book in the middle, Allie Lasky, that she didn’t get in time to bring, she only had her ARCs, so she is mailing me a copy of that one and I’ll share it when it arrives. The second picture is the second book in my friend’s series that she gave me a copy of in exchange for helping her out! I’ve needed to get it, but haven’t had the time yet, so this was awesome. I put my name badge and the sticker that goes with the series that she had made to hand out at the event.

What I’m Watching

Still rewatching Outlander from the beginning as it is a comfort show for me and I’m so stressed being alone at work again.

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

All three of these are e-galleys. The first two for author review teams, the third one I requested because I love the author and request all her books early if I can!

Final Thoughts

And we’re now in February! With an extra day at the end since it is a Leap Year. How has February started out for you? Here’s a meme that represents our weather this past week!

  1. Sorry to hear about your school troubles. I fear for society sometimes with some of these teenagers and how they act like that. I see that behavior in my niece sometimes too and it’s just disheartening. Sorry to hear about your assistant too, but glad you might be able to get some help as it sounds like you need it in your library! Sending you a virtual hug for all that stress you had this week <3 Hoping that this week will be easier for you!

Nice new reads! Those are all new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all once you get to read them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

Hoping this week goes a little smoother. I need to do more to close the library, but since I have a student TA during that hour it is hard to completely close the library.

The problem or reason why I can’t really just leave is that I have a student TA that hour so I can’t leave him alone. I’m going to try to put a sign in front of the door so that other students don’t come in, like a big sign, not just one hanging on the door.

Got a little rest, although another week alone until I get a sub in, but at least I can start reaching out to find one!

Lol. We’ve got both sides either for or against the Chiefs based on who they beat and who they’re playing. But I get it! There are teams that even if they’d beat my Chiefs I’d have rooted for them to beat the other teams.

I try to take some notes as I post updates on Goodreads but I don’t always remember to do that. I need to go ahead and start on my review this week while it is still pretty fresh in my memory though!

  2. Ugh. Kids have way too much access to guns. That’s scary. I’m glad no one was hurt. I’m sorry your clerk is out until April 30 but I’m glad you can look for some help. I hope you have a better week this week.

Yep, sent the email today to a few of the possible subs, will try some of the others if I don’t hear from them soon.

  3. Congrats on the Super Bowl! Sorry about the events at school though. Yikes! We had someone come to school in tactical gear the other year. He just at in the library and waited for the cops to arrive. Didn’t have a gun but the tac gear freked everyone out…

  4. Sorry it was a tough week. I wish those “at lunch” signs got results. I work at a campground and can’t take lunch breaks because customers will just hammer on the door until I open it. They don’t care about the sign.

  5. Wow, sounds like a tough week. Sorry work has been so stressful for you. I can’t imagine how trying working in a school setting can be in these days and times. At least you had a fun activity planned for Saturday and I am sure you are enjoying Outlander. Hope your week is better.

Outlander always makes me a little less stressed, even the episodes that stress me out or make me cry, lol.

  6. I’m sorry over all you’ve had to deal with in school! I’d want to take a mental health day too! I’ll be starting the next WTZ hopefully soon.

Thanks for adding your link, because there wasn’t one when I clicked on the Blogger one for “Buffywnabe” and I felt bad because I didn’t know where to return the comment! Now I know for future reference! 🙂

I need to remember to add my links on your posts! Thanks for the reminder! Sometimes when I try to comment at work when I have time things don’t always pop up the way I want them to.

  7. That’s nice you got some warmer weather this week. I hope your talk with the new principal helped and that he can hire someone to help you out. I like those signs you made! And that poster and stickers you made look fun. Sorry to hear about Thursday being so miserable. That sounds fun you were an assistant for an author friend at a book convention and yay for new books!

It’s nice and sunny today, and warmer than the freezing temps we had, but still chilly enough to want a jacket when I go out.
