Weekly Wrap-Up #153 – January 21st, 2024

Posted January 21, 2024 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 34 Comments

Sunday started out just as frost covered on my windows as the image above is! Cold and snow covered ground. I feel like it’s been a few years since we’ve had snow that wasn’t melted off within a week. I’d been in the house since Friday, so decided to get out and see a movie.

Monday I woke up and decided to see if the doctor office was open so I could get my blood drawn after fasting overnight. It was and I got that done. So now I won’t have to try to go into school late one morning to make that up. It was still cold as can be. But I’d bought tickets to go see a movie with my mom, so got out to do that too. When we got out of the movie it had started snowing again, and it kept snowing for a bit, a lighter snow than last week, but quite a bit came down! Around 4 pm my school district canceled for Tuesday due to the cold temperatures predicted, along with I think almost all the other districts around the KC area.

Tuesday morning I woke up to another really really cold morning. I had a book I’d ordered from Amazon that was supposed to be delivered Sunday, but then got a notice it was actually coming Monday by 6:45 pm. Come that time, still no delivery, it said by 10 pm. At 10 pm on the dot the delivery info changed to say it should arrive by the 17th, Wednesday. Um, the place it was coming from is like 15 minutes from my house. So a little irritated about that.

Wednesday back at school started out crazy busy! Lots of kids with technical issues with their laptops. Of course a lot of students forgot their laptops too, so we checked out all of our loaners, think we only got 2 of the 13 back before the end of the day. Plus it was our usual early release where students leave around 1 pm and then we have meetings the rest of the day. Found out our district is no longer going to have any fines for lost library books at all. I mean, I get it on the one hand, but on the other hand, what incentive or reason does a student have to ever return a book? Or take care of it? I never charge late fees, I just tell the kids I want to get the books back for other students to be able to enjoy when they are done. So this is a little frustrating.

Thursday was pretty slow in the library, which also meant it seemed like the day was sooooo long. But that’s okay. It was another warmer day where I didn’t immediately start shivering the minute I walked outside. So that was nice! When I took the dogs outside after dark, I noticed they had put up the sign on the shop not too far from my house, across the busy street one house over from me, and it is a Duck Donuts! I’m so excited to have a donut place like this so close to my house. There is a Dunkin Donuts up the street, but I’m not really a fan of their donuts.

Friday was a bit busier at school. We thought maybe the frigid temps might get us another day off, but nope, still had school. At lunch I DNFed TWO books! One was an e-galley I’d just started, one the publisher had reached out to ask me to read. You’ll have to wait till my DNF Report post later this month to see why I was not a fan. The other was a freebie by an author that will be at the Flirty In Kansas City Convention the first weekend of February that I was trying to see if I’d want to get anything autographed by her.

Saturday was even more cold than Friday but there is supposed to be a change tomorrow and we might even get up into the 40s next week! I slept late, had crazy dreams. Then took my car for the oil change and other things needed at the current mileage. Went to have coffee with my dad, stepmom, and youngest sister.

Books Finished

First two were e-galleys for blog tours, one posted on Thursday, the other Friday. Third was an ARC that I got from the publishers just two weeks ago that I tried to fit in and posted my review on Tuesday. Fourth was the audiobook I finished up this week, it’s review will be in my L-L-L post at the end of the month. Last was an e-galley I finished up for a blog tour on Wednesday.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

None

Bookish Stuff:

Meghan Quinn had some new stickers in her shop, so I had to order the new pack! I loved the pigeon and book boyfriends and all of it! Of course my blog planner cover is running out of room for stickers, so I only put the pigeon one on for now.

E-galleys:

The first 3 are for the Coffee Loft series, one is for a review this Tuesday and the other two both come out in February so expect those reviews next month! The 4th one is for the author’s review team. I had to skip the last book in the series because I had so many things planned to review I just didn’t think I could get it done, plus this series seems to have longer books. Hoping to be able to get through this one by February 1st. The 5th one is the sequel to the book I finished and loved last week, and when I saw it on Edelweiss I immediately got it. The last one was sent to me by a publisher to download from Netgalley. It sounds good and comes out in April I believe, so look for a review closer to then.

Free E-books:

Technically the first one wasn’t “free”, it came with the book box I got from Avery Flynn’s monthly Patreon when I forgot to unsubscribe after last month. There is a physical book and box coming too though! The second one isn’t really free either, as it is one of the First Reads for Amazon Prime subscribers and I never seem to get to them! lol. The third one was actually free on Amazon and I have the first three in that series as freebies as well. And the fourth one I also have the one in the series before it free on Amazon too, lol. Fifth one was also free on Amazon, and it was already on my TBR too!

Physical books:

So, I haven’t read this author yet, even though I have the first book in this series as a freebie e-book. When she posted on Instagram about her new covers that you can color yourself, I HAD to buy a copy. Now I just have to read it, lol.

What I’m Watching

Still waiting on new seasons to start up after the Super Bowl I guess. Continuing to finish up the first part of season 7 of Outlander and waiting for the second half to be shown, no date for that yet. Along with my Apple TV + renewal I was reminded there was a second season of Invasion, so I started that as well.

Sunday I went to see a rom-com because I want to make sure to support those so maybe we get more of them made into movies. And I LOVED this movie! It was exactly like the books I read, except no actual sex scenes, although some pretty close! It had crazy things happening, perfect banter, wacky family members and friends, it was perfection. I highly recommend it!

Monday I went to see a scary movie with my mom, Night Swim. It was okay, but wasn’t that scary. And I always have to wonder, who walks into their own house when they get home at night and doesn’t turn lights on? Seriously?

Then Monday night I saw a button on my tv screen that said I could get a free 3 month trial of Apple TV+ so I clicked it. Turned out for some reason it was wrong and I ended up getting charged. Ugh. So I went ahead and watched a movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, and will cancel at the end of the month. The movie was okay. Not the topic, but just how it was filmed was kind of scattered and not always the easiest to completely keep up with. Although by the end I was used to it I guess.

I also remembered I’d wanted to watch the new Monarch series on AppleTV+ and so started that and was hooked right away!

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

All of these are both for blog tour reviews this week, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

I’ve also got about 3 promo posts this week.

Final Thoughts

Can you believe January is almost over? It’s been a cold snowy month with lots of days off of school because of that weather. How has your January been so far? Read any good books? Here’s a picture of what I was looking at most of the time I was home on snow days, my laptop for blogging and a cup of hot cocoa, this one using a favorite mug from the After series by Anna Todd.

  1. Sounds a lot like a week we had over here weather wise! Tuesday was a nutso day and lots of schools were closed, but for some reason my sister’s wasn’t. But then the blower in her loaner car wasn’t working and she just decided to call in as she couldn’t drive safely to school so there was that at least! And omg, that thing with Amazon happens to me all the time! I get when things get delayed for weather reasons but continued delays is just nuts, especially if the facility is really close! I’m always tempted to drive to the USPS STL distribution center USPS always has trouble with. I think it was a little less than 30 min away? Totally doable when all my packages get held up there for days on end! Lol. But that’s also nuts that your school decided to remove late fees. It’s like you said, why would any kid return a book now if there’s no punishment?! I hope kids will still return books for you guys so the library doesn’t become empty over time!

Nice new reads! Lots of new to me ones here but I hope you enjoy them all! And that book with the color it yourself cover is awesome! I think I saw one of these online at one point and I thought, is that a cover you color yourself or a glitch on the website making it all white? Lol. Very cool!

Hope you have a great week ahead!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

That’s exactly what I was thinking, what if I just drive and pick up all my packages! It’s insane! I’ve never charged late fees, I’ve just always told the kids I want the book back and if they need more time that’s fine. I only charged if they never returned the book or it was damaged and had to be thrown out. Now I can’t even do that. 🙁

  2. Wow I really love your bookshelves in the background and I love the colored keyboard keys. So creaive. I hope your week goes well and you really enjoy and pitcute everything you believe will happen this week:)

    • Lisa Mandina

The keyboard thing is a little plastic thing you can buy on Amazon! I like it for keeping my keyboard cleaner as well! I hope it is a good week, but stressed since my clerk will be gone all week and there is testing that will make it so I have to sit outside my library for 3 days. Ugh. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

The laptop keys are covered by a little thing you can buy on Amazon. It’s fun and also helps keep dust and stuff out of it. Yeah, Night Swim was okay, I just needed more of the background on why what happened and they didn’t give much. There were a few creepy jump scares, but that’s about it I felt.

  3. You got a lot accomplished considering the crazy weather schedule. I really like how moderated our temperature is here being between the mountains and ocean. It’s one of the reasons I chose to move here. Thanks for reminding me I have to go look at my First Reads. If you have KU, they are usually there also, often with audio. I look forward to seeing you later!

  4. i think we are all in the same boat with cold, snow and ice is it spring yet? Though were i live we get spring for like a week and then it gets super hot. The leia stone books look interesting i have to check those out.

    • Lisa Mandina

I feel like our spring is kind of like that too sometimes, or else we get spring like weather now, then some cold again, then a little spring then just hot. Hope you have a good week!

  5. It’s been super cold and snowy here too. We hardly went anywhere other than work all week.

Monarch looks awesome! Holy cow I need to try that.

Thanks for the Inkitt rec. I’ll check that site out.

Yeah, it was mostly work and home for me as well! Monarch is really good, I think you’ll definitely like it!

  6. I always hate getting my blood drawn. My doctor’s office has a lab so I can get it done before I leave, usually. But, when he needs me to fast, I have to come back. I procrastinate it as long as I can. I don’t mind getting pricked. I just hate watching needles go in my skin and I always bruise. Not fun. I hope you didn’t bruise and I hope you get the results soon. Hopefully, it’s a good prognosis.

I used to almost pass out every time I had to get a shot or give blood. But I also got a few tattoos, again almost passing out. And now as long as I don’t look when they take the blood it helps, but I’m not a fan! Blood results came back good!

  7. Aw, always sucks when you have to DNF a book.

A lot of my local libraries have abolished fines! Apparently there were some studies and the fines don’t actually seem to help? I think I remember something about that, anyway.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I don’t give late fines. Never have felt those were worth it. To me I only want the money if I have to replace a book, and that is what they are no longer going to let us do.

  8. Most of the country has had frigid temps! It affected our travel last week. I’ve read a few books by Devney Perry and enjoyed them. Love the idea of coloring the book cover. How cool!

Had fun on the chat today. I’m looking forward to the coming books too.

I haven’t read Devney Perry but have wanted to, and what a perfect way! I actually found some of my favorite authors because of pages they had in a coloring book. The chat was fun! I started book 2 audio tonight, and it’s good so far!

    • Lisa Mandina

It is a lab in the doctor’s office, not actually the doctor themself, but yeah we do it there. Wow! A foot of snow! We had a lot, but not that much!

  9. Congrats to your Chiefs for another win. I grew up in Michigan and am so excited how well the Lions are doing! I was in college back in 1991 when they made it this far and lost. I remember it so vividly to this day.

I hadn’t heard anything about Anyone But You and last night ran into friends who’d just seen it. They raved about it and told me I had to see it. Glad to hear it’s so good.

Last semester, my son checked out a physical book from the school library (college) and before break, he went to renew it because he’d not finished it. They told him to keep it as long as he wanted because nobody checks out books anymore!

I hope you have a good week.

    • Lisa Mandina

I am very excited for the Lions too! I love seeing teams that have been down start winning! I mean my Chiefs went for so long not doing great that we are loving all the good times we have now. Anyone But You was really good, and I had to go see it in the theater so maybe we can get Hollywood to do more movies like that! In high school I still have readers. And of course it is always the really popular books that go missing and then I have a list of kids waiting to read that one.

    • Lisa Mandina

It will be my first by Perry, and even though I know it’s not the first in the series, it is the one that called out to me the most based on the blurb.

    • Lisa Mandina

It was nicer today, I actually went without my coat for a bit this afternoon! Only between the car and the school building.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I think I’m even more okay with DNFs this year because I am trying to pare down my TBR list, especially the e-books I downloaded as freebies I think. Like you I don’t want to waste time if I’m not enjoying something.

  10. I hope you get some warmer weather soon! We got some snow and icy roads here last week, but it’s all melted now and now we have strong winds instead. That’s good you got your blood drawn, hopefully the results are good. Too bad about your package getting delayed so much. And slow days always feel like they’re even longer than busy ones. Sorry you had tow DNF books this week, I do think it’s good to DNF a book if you don’t like it, but having multiple in a row doesn’t seem fun. I hope the rest of your reads were good ones. Your new books look good and I like the look of your new stickers!
