Weekly Wrap-Up #148 – December 17th, 2023

Posted December 17, 2023 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 26 Comments

Last Sunday I ended up spending another couple hours at the library to get some blogging done while my house guest was still with us. I decided to drop my Goodreads goal to 195 since I was probably not going to get another 17 books read by the end of the year. We’ll see if I can make that goal though! We had another Chiefs game, which I wasn’t expecting much from with one of our best players out, as well as the way we’d been playing. We didn’t deserve to win, and we did not. Although I know the call offsides was a real one, it just sucked because of how awesome the play was that then just got scrapped because of that call. And I know everyone is all over Mahomes for being a crybaby, but it wasn’t just that call. It was bad calls earlier in the game, as well as the last game we lost last week that was somewhat due to a bad call. Plus I’m sure he’s frustrated with his receivers not doing a good job either.

Monday was a lot of irritation still with the game lost the night before. A busy day though at school. It was PJ day, my favorite spirit week day. I had to go sub for one class, and they want me to do that same class for the rest of the week because the teacher I guess will be out that long. It’s like an advisory/homeroom class, hoping I don’t have to do anything with the students, although it sounds like now they’re adding something I’ll need to do. Ugh. At least the dogs are somewhat having fun, even if I’m ready for my two dog household to go back to normal. Here is Argyle playing tug of war with Khiona.

Tuesday also flew by really. Not a ton to actually do other than lots of laptop issues to still deal with. Lots of people using the library for testing, etc. I had an idea to move some shelves to add more room to my Sci-Fi section, so I got started on that in the afternoon. I went and picked up a last minute Christmas gift in the evening. I also got my gift from my TBTB (The Broke and The Bookish) Santa partner. Some yummy sounding dark chocolate, snacks for my pups, an ornament perfect for my peacock themed Christmas tree, and two books I’m excited about!

Wednesday the chorus from that Phil Collins’ song, “One More Night” kept going through my head as I looked forward to my hopefully last night with our house guest. Also realized I’d spent too much money the past couple months and with Christmas, and am hurting money-wise again. No big checks expected this year, blowing through my savings at the rate I’m going. Maybe I should not have given up the online class thing, at least that would be about $1000 check I’d get this month.

Thursday morning was sweet as I was able to drop our house guest Khiona back off at my friend’s house and things could go back to normal at home! Another busy, but fast day at school too. Coming home to just two dogs was perfect though!

Now, Friday was busy at school, but also seemed to drag! We had our work holiday party right after school. I stayed until they drew for the raffle winners, then went over to my friend’s house who I’d been watching her dog. I had some old sheet sets that no longer fit my mattress with the adjustable bed, they’re still in good shape, but Good Will won’t take sheets anymore because of bed bugs. So I gave them to her to take to a local shelter because they will still take them. She also got me a couple souvenirs in Mexico. A cute tshirt and a little hummingbird that I hung on my Christmas tree for now.

Saturday I slept till 10 am, thanks to a cloudy, gloomy morning! It was wonderful! And I was able to let my dogs sleep most of the night with me. Although I may make the thing of the first part of the night where I sleep alone a thing from now on. All day was a rainy day. Went and had coffee with my dad, stepmom, and sister. Then I went out and shopped for the family at my school that my mom and I adopted for Christmas.

First was an audiobook I finished up that was a possible Gateway nominee, it will get reviewed with my December L-L-L Reviews. Second was an ARC from the publisher, my review was supposed to be posted this past week even though it doesn’t come out till next year since the publisher asked me to do that. Unfortunately with my house guest I just didn’t get it done, so I’ll be posting it Monday. Third was a free e-book I found to read when I was dealing with my house guest not letting me read an actual book in bed, lol. I also spent some time reading it at my desk at work a few times during the week. Fourth I just finished Saturday night before bed. It was one of the books my TBTB Santa gave me! Should do a review by the end of the month for it.

ARCs:

Got this from the publisher on Thursday. I loved the first one, in fact when it came out I even got a fun little box with a mug and other fun stuff. They sent me a copy of the first one with the ARC, which is actually perfect because the copy I had in my school library got damaged so bad I had to discard it. So I can replace it with this one! The new ARC doesn’t publish till June, so look for my review sometime next year closer to that date.

Audiobooks:

None

Bookish Stuff:

I love signing up to get Christmas cards from my favorite authors. This year I got one from Piper Sheldon, and it looks like maybe her daughter also signed the card, so cute! Loved the sticker that came with the card too, immediately put it on my 2024 blog planner!

E-galleys:

None

Free E-books:

First four were freebies on Amazon. Last three were free for signing up for an author’s newsletter.

Physical Books:

These are the two books I got from my TBTB Santa. I started the first one Thursday night!

This week was the finale for this season of The Amazing Race. I liked all three of the final teams so was happy with who won no matter what! I also finished season 2 of Good Omens, which definitely ended on a cliffhanger. I also watched Leave the World Behind, I think another blog I follow watched it so I had to give it a try!

I’m a little mad at Netlix right now though. I wanted to watch the made from a YA book series called My Life With the Walter Boys. Yet on Friday night when I went to watch it, I couldn’t because I have the cheapest plan with ads through Netflix. They said because of licensing agreements you can’t watch it on that level of plan. If it was only another $5 to the next plan from mine, I would maybe have upped my plan for a while. But it is almost another $10 a month for the next level, and with my finances right now, it’s not worth it. I will cancel my Netflix for a while because of this. So tired of all the different levels of streaming and different channels. Probably resubscribe when the next season of Bridgertoon is finally out. Call me old, but I miss just plain old cable with all the channels and you could choose to pay extra for movie channels.

This one was supposed to be last week, but I didn’t have time to write a real review, I think all the others I’ve read will just be a part of my L-L-L Reviews for the month. Or maybe I’ll go ahead and post that this week? Don’t know. I am probably going to try to get my discussion post up if it wasn’t last week. I may or may not do the Winter Season of Books giveaway. I am actually thinking of backing away from most of the giveaways I’ve been doing because of my current finances not being where I’d like them to be. I will probably do an extra day of the Top 10 lists on Saturday though. I might also combine all my Christmas reads into one review post too instead of saving them for my monthly L-L-L post.

Only two and a half more days of school till I get to be off for about two weeks! I’m so ready to get all that rest back that I thought I was caught up on from Thanksgiving till my houseguest came to stay. I’ve got so many plans for what I want to do with my reading and blogging next year. I can’t believe how close we are though! Also looking forward to Christmas next weekend, Christmas Eve with my mom’s side and since I started talking to my dad’s side again earlier this year, I’ll be doing Christmas Day with them. Although my sister who lives in Scotland won’t make it home this year.

How are you doing? Are you ready for the holidays if you celebrate? Do you at least have a break from work coming up? Have you met your reading goals for the year? Look at the fun AI Pixar cartoons I made of Argyle and Dora this week!

  1. Sounds like a nice week all in all! Glad your “house guest” went home safely and things can return to normal! That’s always nice after a long bout of change! I don’t really follow football too much but I have been hearing the Chiefs weren’t doing so well like usual. Hopefully they’ll do better for their Christmas game! Or today if they are playing! I am so out of the loop I don’t know what games are going on today! Lol.

Nice new reads! All totally new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all! Your TBTB Secret Santa gift is awesome! My person got theirs this week too and I was so happy she liked everything! Keeping an eye out for mine. I know our one distribution center is always behind somehow so I’m sure that will hold things up as I noted quite a few of my important packages stayed there for days on end the past few months.

Hope you have a great week ahead!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

ooh, that’s true, your post office seems to have a lot of issues! That’s infuriating. Yeah, the Chiefs play today. I’m wishing for the days when I was a loyal fan because they were a hometown team, but I didn’t get into all of it like I do now. It’s so frustrating when you care more about the game, lol. I can’t believe we have a game on Christmas too! My youngest sister says we have to do our Christmas that day before or after because she doesn’t like football and doesn’t want to be there while everyone else watches. Have a great week!

      • Yeah if my family needs it on, I plan to slip into my room and watch the 24 hours of A Christmas Story marathon! Lol! I have the DVD but it’s just tradition for me to watch it on TV for all 24 hours, commercials and all! Lol. And it always seems that even though I have it on the whole time…I only ever catch the whole thing maybe once or twice! Lol.

  2. It’s so exciting you will have the time off at Christmas for family and relaxing. It’s been a busy year for you. I can’t believe how fast this year has flown by. I’ve done nothing much for the holidays except stockpile a few gifts for my daughter. We do have “off” until Jan 8th when her school starts but I always have plenty to do myself.

I know what you mean, I can’t believe how fast it has gone by either! I still need to wrap everything. Usually by now I have that done, but my house guest the past few weeks kind of kept me from getting much done. Hope you have a good week!

  3. Your peacock themed tree looks neat! And glad you’ll be able to celebrate with your dad side again…

I hear you on streaming. Our Netflix is up to $23 for some reason and they cancel everything, I’m not even sure we use it much anymore. And yes I miss cable too. Too many streamers now.

Wow, $23? I think my mom upgraded to that plan before they kicked me and my brother off. Because they said if she upgraded then supposedly we could stay on it, at least that’s how they made it sound.

  4. You must be so excited to be back to a two dog house! I know having an extra pup was difficult. Netflix is probably my least used streaming service and I cancel it pretty frequently. Hope you have a smooth couple of days before break!

I think Netflix is good up to a point. I mean to be fair, I did just watch a new movie on it, lol. So far busy at school, but only a day and a half left!

    • Lisa Mandina

Definitely give Leave the World Behind a try! I found out it’s based on a book, so I may have to check that out!

  5. Those pics are great. Yes, streaming services are really raking people over this year. We have Netflix and I am not sure exactly what we pay but I know it keeps going up and up. Glad you finally got rid of your house guest even though Argyle was super cute. I am feeling the holiday stress and was even a day late getting my weekend post up but did manage this morning. Hope you are able to cut out some costs which will help. I’m sure once January arrives, things will slow down on all fronts. Hope you have a good week!

Ooh, Argyle is my dog, it was Khiona that was the visitor. :-). Let’s hope January and 2024 slow down! Although with no big trip on the horizon next year, maybe I can get back on my feet.

  6. I was surprised to see both Mahomes and Reid hit with hefty fines after that game. Yikes. It was good to see them come back from that loss and beat the Patriots. My Jags on the other hand… yikes. We’ve lost out last two games. This past Sunday the Ravens beat us at home. Badly. 🙁 I just recently saw a preview of Leave the World Behind and I might be watching it soon.

    • Lisa Mandina

I think the fine thing is crazy. But I guess any job you can get in trouble if you talk bad about your “boss” or employer like that. But it’s not like the NFL would want to “fire” those two, lol. Hoping my Chiefs keep doing well over the next few games that are supposed to be easy ones they say.

  7. Well, it’s now Friday, so you are on break! Woo Hoo! I am too. I finished wrapping gifts yesterday and need to pack after I do blog visits. We are leaving to my sister’s tomorrow early. Merry Christmas!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yay for holiday break! I’ve got everything wrapped now too! Hope you have a safe trip and a nice holiday!
