Weekly Wrap-Up #131 – August 20th, 2023

Another super busy week! Teachers were back and we’re getting closer to having the students back.

Sunday was kind of a crazy weather day. We had tons and tons of rain. Driving down streets was like driving through a flooded area after a summer that we have been in a drought. Then, when I thought that was over, we got some crazy strong winds. My next door neighbor’s had the huge tree in the middle of their backyard that was blown over, roots and all coming out of the ground. It’s a little nerve wracking as the big tree in the middle of my backyard is probably close to being dead and could do that as well. Guess I need to look into taking care of that before mine falls too. Fortunately they didn’t get much damage other than some siding and the gutters where it fell, and no one got hurt.

Monday was back to school. A little calmer today. I got to do more working on my genre areas, after moving all my tables back to where they belonged after the registration events last Thursday and Friday. My clerk spent almost the whole day laminating things for people, tons of stuff! We just changed the laminator rolls last week and will probably have to change them this week if it keeps up! Here is a picture of the Adventure section that I finished on Monday.

I also found out Monday afternoon that one of my uncles passed away. I’d actually been talking with my dad about him this weekend, and we’d heard he had taken a turn for the worse. He had Parkinson’s and was in a care facility. His wife, my aunt, had passed away in 2021 I think it was.

Tuesday was the last day without all the teachers back. I had decided the night before to go ahead and just print out the letters to put up over the genre sections. I got Fantasy, Mystery, Romance, and Science Fiction finished. Although I really still want to find some kind of large dragon poster for the Fantasy section. Here is what they looked like at the end of Tuesday.

When I got home from work Tuesday I mowed the lawn. It was warmer than I expected it to be after two really cool and perfect weather mornings.

Wednesday was the first day for all teachers to be back. Came in and found out they were going to move all the tables from one side over to the other side. Which is fine, it just sucked because we’d just moved them back to where they belonged on Monday. Fortunately one of the assistant principals actually helped move them all back after the meetings so that was nice! Also the heat was back for the weather. Took the dogs out after school and I ended up with numerous bug bites when we came back inside.

Thursday was a busy and long day. We had more meetings in the morning at school. Then about an hour to work in our classroom, and hour for lunch and to get to our afternoon meetings at the other high school in the district. I did find out I don’t have to do the online classes like I did last year because another teacher was willing to take it over. So that meant I got to go to the library meeting instead. Then I drove the 25 minutes to the church where they were having my uncle’s visitation. I stayed there about 45 minutes before driving back to school for Open House where I was supposed to pass out schedules, but ended up checking out laptops to 9th graders.

I took Friday off of work so that I could go to my uncle’s funeral. I wasn’t able to take a day of bereavement, had to take personal business day because they don’t count an uncle as “immediate family”. Never mind the fact that when I was a kid, and at my dad’s every other weekend, we would go out and spend most of the Sunday at their house and I played with my cousins and just was really close to my family.

Saturday I loved sleeping in so much! I met my dad, stepmom, and sister for our “coffee” date. After hanging out with them for a few hours I ran some errands and then went home. We got our house guest Gabriel back in the evening to hang out with us for a few days again.

Books Finished

The first two are for blog tour reviews posted this past week. The third one is an audiobook I was listening to for the final 25 on the list for next year’s Gateway titles. The last one is an e-galley I’m behind on getting read.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

Downloaded this one from the library to listen to for the final 25 readers list for the Gateway committee.

Bookish Stuff:

Got my August Picklegram from author J.J. Knight. This month she had a fun charm bracelet! There are different Patreon tiers who get different charms, so you can see what tier I’m at from my charms.

E-galleys:

The publisher sent me a link to get this from Edelweiss so I decided I would download it and review it closer to the pub date which is December I think.

Free E-books:

None

Physical books:

First I ordered a hardback illustrated copy of Meghan Quinn’s latest, The Way I Hate You, and it showed up a day early, but as you can see the box was damaged and so was the book. 🙁 Fortunately Amazon said they would send me a new copy and it arrived in much better condition!

What I’m Watching

Well, no more Outlander till 2024. However I have restarted watching from the beginning and really am enjoying seeing all the places I visited on my Scotland trip this summer. I did watch the Red, White, and Royal Blue movie on Amazon Prime and really enjoyed it!

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

The first one is the e-galley I finally got done. The second two are ARCs from the publisher, and the last one is an e-galley from the author’s review team. I also have a couple promo posts this week.

And school starts for students this week!

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time! My current monthly giveaway is HERE! Remember if I get over 100 entries in that monthly giveaway I add more winners, and so far this year I’ve had over 100 entries every month. And for July I had over 600 entries, so I picked 6 winners!

I also started a Summer Seasons of Books Giveaway last month, so be sure to go enter that HERE. This giveaway goes for several months, so lots of chances to get entered.

And I celebrated my 14th Blogoversary last week, and that giveaway is part of last week’s wrap up post HERE.

Final Thoughts

How is your August going so far, can you believe it’s halfway over? Did you read or watch anything good this past week? Get any good books?

  1. Those books look so great. I hope to check out that book by Kirsten. It was real hot yesterday which turned a lot of writers away from our monthly writers event.

I just finished the Mister Magic book last night and it was pretty good! We’ve had really hot weather here, and it goes till Thursday in an excessive heat warning I guess!

    • Lisa Mandina

I’m hoping it will make students check out more! I just finished Mister Magic last night so hope to get my review posted by tomorrow as well. Hope we both enjoyed it!

yeah, I really need to get a tree person out to take my dead tree out of my backyard before that happens to me.

  2. Sorry to hear about your uncle. Your genre shelves are very cool! I love that! It’s just like walking into the bookstore. It makes it easier to find the books you’re looking for! As long as your idea of genre matches the bookseller’s…lol. Had many problems with that growing up on my trips to Borders!

Nice new reads! Glad Amazon was able to help you out so quickly! They took wayy too long to take my word for it that they delivered my package to another address entirely! I guess CS was under the impression that the person who received my order would contact Amazon or something and return the misdelivered package and it would then make its way to me…which never happened. Not that I ever thought it would.

Hope you enjoy all your new reads!

    Thanks for visiting my StS!

Well, my genrefication is probably influenced by the years of working at Barnes & Noble, lol. I had something I ordered on Facebook one time not realizing they still had my old address. It said it was delivered but I never got it. More recently when I tried to order something I noticed it and got it fixed, but I’m wondering if that other item went to my old address and the people living there now just kept it.

  3. So sorry to hear about your uncle. Those library shelves look so inviting and friendly:)). I hope the coming week isn’t too hectic – I recall the runup to starting school. I don’t miss that frantic scramble to have everything ready for the start of term one little bit!

Do you have a blog I can go comment on? The link for your name on here takes me to an under construction site and I don’t want to miss commenting on your blog if there is one!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I need to hurry up and get someone out to look at the dead tree in my backyard. I’m just scared how much it is going to cost!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I’m still in charge of checking out and in laptops, as well as collecting broken ones and giving out new ones and then the tech people pick up the laptops at the end of each day. But I don’t have to deal with online students thankfully.

  4. I’m sorry for your loss. It’s nice that you were able to go to the services, despite the rules on bereavement. Your library shelves look so awesome! I hope the students (and teachers) know how fortunate they are to have such a great, caring librarian! I hope the first week with students goes smoothly. We still have a week and half here until the kids go back.

    • Lisa Mandina

I’m hearing lots of teachers say how good things look and asking about bringing students down, so I’m excited for that!

    • Lisa Mandina

Ooh, I didn’t think about Etsy! I’ll try that! I had just had a wishlist on Amazon I was getting some people to buy off of, so had hoped to find something there.

  5. I am so sorry to hear about your Uncle and he should be considered immediate family. I know the state I work for considers it as such. Your neighbors got very lucky with that tree. We had one we just had trimmed and topped out 2 years ago and that alone cost us over $1000 so I know what you mean when you say it could be rather pricy. You would think insurance would assist but they just told us they would cover any damages it did if it did fall. Crazy! Hope you have a great week.

    • Lisa Mandina

I have a feeling it is going to be about $1000 unfortunately. Yeah, insurance is crazy. You’d think they would want to do something like this to prevent damage since it would be cheaper in the long run, but they don’t.
