The Looooong and the Short of It: April 2024 Wrap-Up Post and Looking Forward to May

Posted May 1, 2024 by Lisa Mandina in End of the month post / 6 Comments

April was about as long as March, and I had the extra time with my conference in the middle, so I got a bit more reading than last month I guess. The month was better than April of last year when both my mom and stepdad ended up in the hospital, but my mom still is struggling with some of my stepdad’s health issues. My dad and stepmom were visiting my sister who lives in Scotland all month, so didn’t see them at all. Weather was up and down with temps. Work was up and down as well with dealing with the same things. At least my district did vote to give the teachers a raise next year, so I’ll be miserable, but make more money, unless I figure out another job to get away before then!

As I mentioned my reading was back up a bit, probably because of the SmartyPants Romance release and those I usually adore and speed through! I did have two DNFs again, and finished 15 books. So back close to what I’ve done in the past.

  • # of pages read: 3926 – for 12 books
  • Amount of time spent listening to audiobooks – Since I only count what I finished in my personal calculations, my time spent was 32 hours and 48 minutes for 3 audiobooks. I did have some of the same stress keeping me from concentrating on listening which meant I’d switch to music in the car on those days.

Here are my StoryGraph stats for April:

April Reviews

Of the 17 specific titles listed last month, I got 14 read and most reviewed, one not started till May, one DNF, and one save for later till I read the rest of the series first.

Challenge Check-In

My goal is 24 for the year using the prompts that are listed, and I got two more done. I switched up two for a couple audiobooks I decided to listen to, but I’m still one book behind.

  1. Prompt: On your TBR 5+ years – Five Minutes Late by Rich Amooi
  2. Prompt: Anthology or omnibus edition – The Natural History Novellas by Erin Mallon
  3. Prompt: We all scream – horror – The Dead List by Jennifer L. Armentrout
  4. Prompt: Walk through history – Something Wilder by Christina Lauren
  5. Prompt: Writing about writing – The Nerd and the Neighbor by Lainey Davis
  6. Prompt: STEM stan – Co-Wrecker by Meghan Quinn
  7. Prompt: 4 Word title – Getting Lucky Number Seven by Cindi Madsen

I might have caught up last month with two, but this month I got none done.

My goal was one book a month. I didn’t get any done this month so I’m behind!

  1. Hooked by Lynn Stevens
  2. Five Minutes Late by Rich Amooi
  3. The Nerd and the Neighbor by Lainey Davis

My Goodreads and StoryGraph Goals of 150 books are on track with books read so far, putting me ahead of schedule. I’m also still trying to keep my Netgalley percentage above 80%, and since I didn’t grab too many in April, I got it back up to 79%. So working on that!

What to Expect in May

So glad my April this year wasn’t at all like last year. And I’m hoping this May won’t be as miserable a month as the last few months at school have been. What I always look forward to in May is the annual family Memorial Day weekend trip in Branson. It will be the last one at the Lilley’s Landing Resort, now that my mom owns a place down there though, we will go more often just to stay there, even if my aunts aren’t there.

Here is My Proposed TBR for May:
  1. Muffin But Trouble by Talia Hunter – an e-galley for SmartyPants Romance, should be posting the review on the 3rd
  2. Band Together by Piper Sheldon – an e-galley for SmartyPants Romance that I meant to get read in April, but didn’t get to before the month was up. Review should post on the 4th
  3. Bite Me, Royce Taslim by Lauren Ho – An e-galley from the publisher that I hope to read and post the review on the 6th.
  4. Skies Over Caledonia by Samantha Young – an e-galley I will probably get from the author’s review team. I like this series okay, but don’t love it. Not sure how long I will remain on her review team? But if I do this one, it will be reviewed on the 8th
  5. Young Buck by Kilby Blades -another SPR e-galley. Should read and post the review on the 9th
  6. This Book Won’t Burn by Samira Ahmed – I got this ARC from the publisher and when I met the author at AASL last October. Not for sure when I’ll get it read, possibly by the 10th?
  7. Package Makes Perfect by Lauren Connolly – another SPR e-galley, should be posting a review on the 11th
  8. It Waits in the Forest by Sarah Dass – This is an e-galley the publisher sent me, and I hope to read and post its review on the 14th
  9. Truth or Wolf by Anne Marsh – another SPR e-galley, hope to read and post review on the 16th
  10. White Trash Zombie Gone Wild by Diana Rowland – the next to the last book in the series. I’ll start listening to the audiobook at the beginning of May and post the review on the 17th right before we have our chat on the 19th for the read along.
  11. Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P. Manansala – I bought this book a long time ago, because there is a dachshund on the cover of course. I hope to read it as part of my Beat the Backlist Challenge and post a review on the 18th, or else as part of the L-L-L review post for May.
  12. Attached at the Hip by Christine Riccio – the publisher sent me this e-galley and I hope to read and post a review on the 20th
  13. Wild About You by Kaitlyn Hill – another e-galley from the publisher, hope to read and post review on the 22nd
  14. Pity Parade by Whitney Dineen – I think I’m reading this for a blog tour, I’ve always wanted to read this author, so hoping to enjoy and read and post the review on the 23rd.
  15. Our Divine Mischief by Hanna Howard – I bought this book last year because it had a Scottish theme and some cool pre-order goodies. I put it on my Beat the Backlist challenge and hope to read and post a review maybe on the 25th or else as part of the L-L-L Review post for May.
  16. All’s Fair in Love and War by Virginia Heath – the publisher sent me this e-galley. I hope to read and post my review on the 27th
  17. Isabel and the Rogue by Liana De la Rosa – another e-galley from the publisher, hope to read and review on the 30th or 31st
  18. House of Light and Ether by Leia Stone – so, somehow I didn’t get an e-galley of this even though I thought I had, so I may or may not get it read and reviewed by the 30th or 31st.
  19. Any other audiobooks I listen to, like I added a bunch of my past Netgalley books I need to review to get off my shelf to the library’s Libby app. Hopefully/maybe some of my e-books for COYER.

Final Thoughts

How was your April? The weather was up and down all month again. The library conference was rejuvenating and it was much better than April last year, well personal life wise, not necessarily work wise!

I seem to have a ton of books planned to be read in May again, partly from trying to get my Beat the Backlist challenge met and the SmartyPants Romance releases. I’m looking forward to the end of the school year. Somewhat looking forward to my annual family trip to Branson on Memorial Day, it’s bittersweet since it’s probably going to be the last time we stay at the place we’ve been staying for over 20 years now. What are you looking forward to in May?
