Weekly Wrap-Up #125 – July 2nd, 2023

Posted July 2, 2023 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 26 Comments

And here we are in July! The Independence Day celebration is this week for those of us in the United States. And I am now less than a week away from my trip to Scotland! But let’s look back on the last week for now!

Last Sunday was a beautiful day weather wise. While it was still getting up to 90 for the day, there was a wonderful wind from the North that made it really nice outside. I cooked my chicken in the crockpot like I do every week now, although it seemed like there was less chicken at the end. It was just me at my mom’s house for dinner this week, and my stepdad cooked hot dogs on his new grill. It’s a much simpler, easier one to use.

Monday I got a lot done in my library with moving books and getting some of the colorful tape on the shelves to help mark which genre is in that section. I was going to mow when I got home because it is supposed to be really miserable the rest of the week. But my yard doesn’t need it yet, doesn’t look bad at all, so I’m not going to be one of those people who mows constantly. I’ll mow when it needs it. I cooked taco meat and used a brand of taco shells that is supposed to be better, and they were so good!

Tuesday morning was a little crazy as we had some of the weight training students in the library at first because the football players in their class had things going on that they couldn’t be there for or something. I got a lot more of the genrefying stuff done. Had an appointment with my endocrinologist, so had to leave early to make it there in time. Got there and their computer system kept going down, but we got it all done. Doctor wanted some blood work, but it may end up costing me $295! I had it done, and will wait to see what the bill is. Got a phone call from the principal of the middle school where I’d interviewed, but didn’t have time to call her back. Not sure if they’re now going to offer me the job or not, but I just started genrefying my library and would have to leave that for a new librarian in the middle of my project if they didn’t want to do that.

Wednesday quiet until about noon when due to some road work going on near the school their was a water main break and so we sent the students home after they all had lunch at 1 pm. I’m getting a lot more done in my genrefying, but only one more day of summer school. I’ll probably come back in later in July after my trip to finish up. I talked to the principal of the middle school and found out she wanted to offer me the science position they had. I was like, nope, nope, nope! There is no way I’m going back into a classroom. Got my hair colored, the red refreshed so I’ll be perfect for Scotland, lol.

Thursday was the last day of summer school. Glad it is over! It’s so hot in Kansas City right now, I’m ready for fall too. Went to dinner with one of my friends who is a self published author. I’m trying to get her to sign up for the Flirty In Kansas City convention next year. If you’re interested in trying any of her different genres of books, HERE is her Amazon page.

Friday was another hot day. I got out around 10:30 am to mow my lawn, and it was already in the 80s. When I came inside from finishing, and turned on the local news, they said it was up to 90. Ugh. I am not a fan of this heat! I called my credit cards to set up the travel info for my trip so they won’t show up as being stolen and then I’m stuck with no money. Need to call about my phone and find out more about how that will work. Realized I left my packing list for my trip on my desk at school on Thursday, so had to start a new one. Watch a movie now streaming that I had wanted to see in the theater but didn’t get to, Polite Society.

Saturday morning I had scheduled the dogs for their shots at 8:30 am. Not sure what possessed me to schedule so early, but at least it was taken care of early in the day and I was able to do some other things. Both dogs were fine, although Argyle had started on Friday afternoon acting like his back was bothering him, so the vet checked, but said it didn’t look like anything was going on, and that he didn’t seem to be in any pain, unless he was not showing his reaction when she tested. So I’ll just keep him calm as much as possible. I had the vet check Dora’s eyes because I’ve been wondering about her vision lately, and the vet said she has cataracts. Poor little girl.

Books Finished

Both of these were from publishers.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

None

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

The first one is for a blog tour review in August. The second one is for a blog tour in July. Third the publisher sent me the widget on Netgalley, and it comes out in September, so look for my review then! Fourth is from the author, and the review will be later this month on the pub date!

Free E-books:

So I got an email from several of the authors I read about over 1000 free books on Friday, and well, yeah, I might have gone and got quite a few, lol.

Physical Books:

None

What I’m Watching

Still watching The Rising, Outlander, and Silo. Friday night I watched Polite Society streaming on Peacock. It was a little different from what I expected, but I still enjoyed it!

Coming Up Next Week On My Blog

First is an ARC I should have finished last week, but I got behind. The second two are e-galleys from the publisher. I don’t have a lot planned for this week because I knew with my Scotland trip coming up, I wouldn’t want to be overwhelmed with reviews scheduled. It also means that the next week I won’t have anything scheduled because of my tour as well. I am bringing an iPad with me so I can do some things, but don’t know how much I’ll actually do while I’m there, don’t know how my time will be!

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time! My current monthly giveaway is HERE, it just started yesterday! Remember if I get over 100 entries in that monthly giveaway I add more winners, and the last five months I had over 100, so that was two winners each month this year so far. And for June I had over 700 entries, so I’m picking 7 winners! Going through that process right now, will depend on how quickly each responds to my email about which of my giveaway books they want, and if I get them all before I leave this Friday.

I also started a Summer Seasons of Books Giveaway last week, so be sure to go enter that HERE. This giveaway goes for several months, so lots of chances to get entered.

Upcoming Scotland Tour Tidbits

Well this will be the last time I can say “upcoming” as I will be going next week! I’ve pretty much shown all the sites we are scheduled to visit in my last posts, but there are a few I think I might have left out. One because it might be closed. But the three locations I didn’t mention are Deanston Distillery, Tullibardine Chapel, and the Kelpies.

The Deanston Distillery was Uncle Jared’s warehouse, where Claire found the patient with the pox in the show.

Tullibardine chapel is where Rupert loses his eye in the show.

Now these Kelpie statues have nothing to do with Outlander, but they are supposed to be a pretty neat sight, so we are supposed to visit them one evening. Although I hear it doesn’t get dark till pretty late according to my sister who I talked to at 10 pm last weekend and it was still pretty light outside!

Final Thoughts

How was your week? Did you read or watch anything good? Get any good books? How was your June? Can you believe it is July? Will you be celebrating the 4th this week? My day lilies finally started blooming this past week!

  1. It was real hot to. And interesting to hear about those trainers. And wow your summer school ends early. OUrs will be out at the end of July.

    • Lisa Mandina

We had full days of summer school, which was long, most places I’ve been the summer school is only a little over a half day. But that’s a long summer school to go till the end of July, that gives you no time off!

  2. Yeah our weather isn’t any better on this side of the state either. We had a pretty windy storm on Friday that knocked our power out for the unforeseeable future. Power company has no ETA or an estimated ETA, so I am in a constant state of misery. I’m sleeping in the basement since it’s cooler but the bed down there is really uncomfortable and it’s still hot despite the noticeable temperature difference. I don’t do well in heat at all. I swear my internal body temperature has to be higher or something! I’m excited for you for your trip! It’s always fun going somewhere! Going somewhere internationally is even cooler! Hope you have an amazing time!

Nice new reads too! All totally new to me ones but I hope you will enjoy each and every one of them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

I would die without air conditioning right now, I don’t have a basement! I’d have to go stay at my mom’s or dad’s I guess. Ugh. I’m a little worried about my trip to Scotland where they don’t have A/C because I know they have been having a warmer summer than normal. But we’ll see!

  3. You’re so close to your trip now and I’m sure the weather will be much more pleasant for you there. A/C is normal in my city too now depending on if homes are close to the ocean breezes or not. I hope you have a wonderful time on your vacation!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, the temps do look a lot cooler there as of the current forecast, but I’m planning to bring a little USB desk fan just in case!

  4. Its been pretty hot here as well. I was in Europe a few years ago when they were having an unprecedented heat wave. It was tough because they don’t have AC like we do in the states, but it wasn’t miserable. Yay for summer school being over!

Yeah, even with the temps being on the warmer side for them they are still more what I’m going to be comfortable with. As long as it cools down at night for sleep I’ll be good!

    • Lisa Mandina

That’s how I was with my lawn. Although of course the area where the dogs go out grows faster than the rest and my two shorties needed that mowed sooner.

  5. Yeah how does food disappear sometimes? Ha I know sometimes it reduces as it cooks but still… 🙂

I need to watch the latest rising, and watched the Silo finale…

    Have a nice Fourth!

It just seems like it’s less than I put in compared to before. But oh well. I hate that it was the finale. I need season 2 now!

    • Lisa Mandina

Turns out they wanted to hire me for a science teaching job, which I’m not about to go back into the classroom. So that’s okay, I’ll just keep with my current library job!

  6. I am so excited for you that your trip is coming up soon now! It will go by too fast, I am sure. I feel for you with in the heat. It’s just starting to get hot here–talk about a delayed summer. The evenings have been nice though, with a breeze coming through. I need to clean up the patio so I can sit outside and read. The Shadow Sister has me intrigued. I hope you enjoyed it. Love Quest looks like a lot of fun. I recently watched The Silo and loved it. Have you read Wool? I’m debating whether I want to now. I hope you have a great week, Lisa!

    • Lisa Mandina

Most of our nights have cooled down, except a few, still warmer than I like so I go back inside quickly though! lol. I wanted to read Wool, but I find what happens when I start watching a show about a book or go see the movie, that I don’t end up reading the books. So we shall see!

  7. Yes, I’ve been hearing from people that it’s been super hot in the States while I’ve been gone. I really enjoyed the lower temps in Europe! I’ll miss the London weather, actually. Lol. Have a great time on your trip! Can’t wait to hear all about it.

I’ve loved seeing all your pictures on Facebook about your trip! Hoping the weather is nice while I’m in the UK as well!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yep, lots of trying to stay cool these days! I have a feeling I’ll be wearing shorts on the plane because it’s so hot in the US, then get to the UK and want my capris or jeans instead!

  8. Last week was my last regular work week. I’m on summer vacation for the next two months (although I’ll work from home about 1 hour each week). Our summer weather has been so awful – rain almost every day and highs only in the upper 60s or low 70s, which feels colder because of the rain. I need some sunshine to dry out my flower beds, which are overfilled with weeds now. My poor flowers are drowned and sun-deprived. The constant gray is also impacting my mood.

Happy 4th! our annual get together has turned into an indoor potluck because of the rain.

Oh wow! I go back to work at the beginning of August, although I’ll probably be in my library working more in July too. But I guess if I hadn’t worked summer school, I would have had all of June off pretty much too. We got some really good rain last night, well good other than the winds that knocked out my power! Hope you had a nice 4th even inside!
