Weekly Wrap-Up #122 – June 11th, 2023

Posted June 11, 2023 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 26 Comments

One month from today I’ll be enjoying the second day of my Outlander tour in Scotland, yay!

Last Sunday was a nice relaxing day. My 11 year old niece’s dance recital was at noon, and she was in 3 dances this year. Then I just went home and relaxed while my neighbors on either side mowed their yards, lol. I refuse to mow more than once a week, and last week it was Tuesday when I mowed.

Monday was back to summer school. Last day for my clerk though. Things are slowing down a bit for me in the library with summer school students. I’m working on getting more things done, especially so I can try to genrefy my library. I got the suitcase I ordered today. It was featured on Shark Tank and is supposed to be either under the seat size or has a zipper to extend it so it is a little bigger and you can then put it in the overhead compartment instead.

Tuesday was my first day officially by myself for summer school. Honestly there isn’t much for me to actually do for summer school. Which is fine by me because I’m working a lot on getting all the books in the library, fiction anyway, stickered appropriately for when I try to genrefy. The principal at the middle school in our district where the library is leaving kind of last minute called me to see if I wanted to come talk to her about the position. I’m still on the fence. I mean do I stick with the “devil I know” and just finish out the next 5 years till I can retire? Or do I try a new school, middle school, which is where my true love of working with students lies, but it would also probably be a little tiny pay cut? A paycut because they don’t have 10 days before the school year starts like I do, only 5. Plus I assume I wouldn’t be getting the stipend for the online students like I do at high school. Which yeah, I hate doing that, but the money is nice.

Tuesday night I had a guy from the Leaf Filter gutter company stop by and give me an estimate. I was definitely sold on the product and once he gave me the price, I was ready to sign up. So I scheduled it for Thursday.

Wednesday was another quiet day in the library. Went out to dinner with my mom and stepdad, because I was wanting to check the Kansas City outlet location of the Vera Bradley store for a different pattern rain poncho to take with me to Scotland. I found what I was looking for.

Thursday I took a half day because of getting my gutters done in the afternoon. On my way home from school I picked up another “guest” from the breeder. She now has brother and sister dogs as her and her mom’s personal dogs, and she is going to breed both of them, but NOT to each other. So since the girl was in heat, I am watching the boy for a bit. His name is Rolla and he is such a good boy! Lots of playing with Argyle. And then, wow, Rolla was such a good sleeper! I think if it wasn’t for Dora waking us up in the middle of the night, he would have slept all night.

Friday was another quiet day in the library. I found out that the water pressure had messed up like right after I left school early on Thursday, so they went home about an hour early. Came home and mowed the yard for the first day of the week we didn’t have an advisory about the air quality. I also got my new blog banner from Michelle at Limabean Designs. Don’t you love it? I do! I started a movie at home, but didn’t finish it because I was so tired.

Saturday was kind of a nice rainy morning, not a lot of rain, but cloudy and gray, so perfect for sleeping in. Our guest dog Rolla was a good sleeper again. So he would have stayed in bed with me until he needed to go out, and that’s when we finally got up in the morning. I went and had “coffee” with my dad, stepmom, and sister at Starbucks. When I got home I wanted to start watching the new/final season of Never Have I Ever, only to find Netflix had finally cut me off from my mom’s account.

Books Finished

First was an audiobook that was a possible nominee for the library committee. Second was an e-galley for the author’s review team and I posted that on Tuesday. Third was the ARC I started kind of late last week, but had to put aside for the others I had to read. Fourth was from Netgalley and my review was posted on Friday.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

I won this ARC from a Goodreads giveaway. It is published in September so look for the review then!

Audiobooks:

Got this one for free with the summer AudiobookSync for teens that I sign up for and advertise to my students every year.

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

First is for a Rock Star Blog tour this week. Second was from the author who sent out an email with a link to Netgalley to download it. It’s the second in the series and doesn’t come out till September I think? I’ve got an ARC of the first one to read this month.

Free E-books:

This one was free on Amazon.

Physical Books:

I won a mystery prize from a Facebook group and this is what arrived this week. Jillian Dodd is one I’ve wanted to read, so these are cool!

What I’m Watching

Still enjoying the show Silo. Was excited to see the movie Renfield is finally streaming, so I watched that. I really wanted to see it in the theater, but that was when my parents were in the hospital. I definitely enjoyed the movie!

I ended up subscribing to Netflix on my own for the month. I’ll probably cancel after a month and only resubscribe when a show I want to see, like Stranger Things, comes back on. But I was excited to see the next season of Never Have I Ever.

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

First is an egalley I thought I’d get done last week but didn’t. Second is an e-galley for the author’s review team. The last three are for blog tour reviews. There are a couple ARCs I need to get to, but they might have to wait because I ended up signing up for a bunch of review books again!

Giveaways:

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time! My current monthly giveaway is HERE. I started a new giveaway this past week. Remember if I get over 100 entries in that monthly giveaway I add more winners, and the last five months I had over 100, so that was two winners each month this year so far.

Upcoming Scotland Tour Tidbits

I went ahead and cancelled my Airbnb. Decided I’m just going to spend the extra to stay in a hotel.

Our fifth and final day of the tour begins at Craigmillar Castle. This is where the plot to kill Mary Queen of Scots husband was hatched. On Outlander, however, the castle was used as the location for Adsmuir Prison, where Jamie and his men were brought after Culloden. Where we met Lord John Grey.

Final Thoughts

How was your week? Did you read or watch anything good? Get any good books? Enjoy this picture of our house guest this week, Rolla, deciding to jump on my desk as I was trying to blog.

The first two episodes were good! But seemed really short, were the other seasons only half hour long episodes?

  1. Sounds like a decent week all things considered. I was wondering about this Netflix thing. I mean, do they no longer allow users to stream away from home then? What if your mom came over to stream a Netflix show with you and couldn’t access her account because she wasn’t at her home? How does that work? I question these things since eventually I will be moving out once I find my own place and wonder how long until I get cutoff from the family Netflix account.

Nice new reads! Fractured Tide looks intriguing! I also have this exact same cover but for another title. Which is weird. Mine might have more red in the water though. It’s also a UK book, so I guess that explains some of the differences, despite different title and author! Lol. Hope you enjoy all of your new reads!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

Well, there was a choice to say that I was traveling on the screen that popped up. But I figured it wasn’t worth messing with. I’ll just subscribe myself when they have things I want, and unsubscribe when they don’t. Like I do with pretty much every other streaming service, lol. Sometimes similar covers bug me. Like my novella that I self published I had picked a picture I hadn’t seen anywhere else from a stock photo website. A few months after I saw other people using it! Oh well, I’m probably going to take that novella down anyway.

  2. You are doing well with things. Can you get the info on the middle school deal or is it not worth your time if the money is less because of the week and the online stuff? It’s getting close to your trip – you must be excited!

    I love your new banner!

I did go talk to the middle school today. They have one other candidate, so we’ll see! But I think I’d like it!

  3. Yay for Scotland!! And I know how you feel about the job thing. I am the same way-do I stick with what I know because I know it or take a chance. I think, for you, either way, you only have 5 more years. So, if you stay, even with the things you don’t like, its only 5 more years. If you make the switch, even if you don’t like it, its only 5 more years. So, my advice-be willing to take a chance if you think it would be better because even if it isn’t, you get to retire in 5 more years (BTW I am VERY jealous of your only 5 more years. I have many, many more than that.)

That’s true, I didn’t really think about if I did change and didn’t love it, it’s true that it’s still only 5 years! Now technically that is only 5 years to retire from education. I’ll still need to work somewhere, but I’ll be getting my retirement, so I’ll just try to find a “fun” job with health insurance. Like the public library or something.

    • Lisa Mandina

Well, the choice will only be mine if the middle school liked me more than the other person interested in the job. So we’ll see! But after meeting with them today, I think I definitely would be interested.

  4. What a fun trip you have coming up! And the dog guest sounds so sweet. We have been watching Mayans Inc., more of a Mr. Barb thing and rented a good horror movie called The Tank Friday. I’m currently breading Ruby Fever by Ilona Andrews and have no clue what is up next. Love the new header too!

  5. Your getting so close to your trip now! It sounds like your work life is much nicer for summer school than the rest of the school year. Have a great week!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, although I’m not really doing much for actual summer school besides occasionally loaning a loaner laptop or charger to kids, lol. But I am getting a lot done for my own library tasks!

  6. Ooh Fractured Tide. I liked it but didn’t love it so I’ll be curious what you think. Sanctuary for Seers I’m SUPER excited about because Kathleen Baldwin is awesome and I LOVE that series.

I’m still loving Silo but I just KNOW they’re not going to give us enough answers. 🙂

It was a free audiobook, we’ll see when/if I get to it, but it sounded good! Yes, I love Kathleen Baldwin and that series especially! I have a feeling you are totally correct about Silo too!

  7. Rolla is so cute! Personally, I would go talk to the middle school principal as an option. You don’t seem very happy at your current school, and the pay cut doesn’t seem like much. Talking is free, right? I read Fractured Tide a few years ago and loved it. I’ve been waiting forever for the author to write a new book! Have a good week, Lisa😁

I did go talk to the middle school today. We’ll see if they are interested in me over the other candidate, but you never know. If it is someone they already wanted, it was a waste of time for me, but still would be a job I’d probably take if it was offered to me.

  8. Hey there! Sounds like a pretty good start to your summer. It sucks about Netflix. I’m going to go ballistic if they won’t let my son use our account when he’s away at school. We shall see…

So I’ve been really busy for the past month and missed out on so much blog stuff. I am slowly trying to get back into things, but I’ve realized I can’t go back and visit a month’s worth of blog posts from all my peeps. It’s hard when you get out of a routine, right? Things are getting back to normal here, so hopefully I can keep up again.

I LOVE the summer banner – so cute!! I hope your week is a good one.

I would hope that he would be able to, maybe say he was traveling? They should surely figure out a way for that type of situation. Yeah, I have to tell myself that I can’t always get back to all the posts I wanted. I know one blog that I can’t get to at school has a bunch of reviews I want to read and comment on. I can always go read the reviews, but they have it set so that like 30 days or something after the post the comments shut off. Glad you’re having time to do some blogging again!

    • Lisa Mandina

I hope to get the chance to decide about the other job. Just depends if they want to hire me or the other person! Sounds like we both just read two great books!

  9. That’s a tough decision to make regarding your job. The more money and knowledge you already like the job you have even if it’s not with the age group you love is a hard thing to make a change against. I love the new header!

    • Lisa Mandina

Well, seems like they didn’t offer the job to me, so I won’t have to make the decision. 🙁
