Weekly Wrap-Up #52 – January 30th, 2022

Posted January 30, 2022 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 34 Comments

Once again I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer) and with Stacking the Shelves (hosted by Reading Reality).

Can you believe that January is over on Monday? I’d like to say it flew by, and in a way it did, but man it was long in so many other ways.

So, Sunday night was a heart-stopping crazy edge of my seat football game as my Kansas City Chiefs won in overtime. It was such a great game. The Bills played so good, it was nice to beat a team that it felt like they were worthy of and had to work to beat. It was such a roller coaster last two minutes of the game and then OT. Crazy! And thanks to the win, our school district superintendent sent out an email on Sunday night saying we could wear jeans to work all this week!

Monday I knew was going to be busy because we’re still getting virtual classes final grades sent to us. And I was so glad that a teacher had asked me to go over databases and some research tips with her students. I had to go to her classroom to do it because they were doing ESL testing in the library, which led to some lovely technology based problems, but we worked it out and I think it went really great. And it felt so good to be doing librarian things! Unfortunately my assistant was pulled out of the library, so the whole time I was in the classes teaching, which was only the first and last hour of the day, there wasn’t really anyone in the library to help students, so I had to basically close it, while still leaving it open.

Tuesday was some of the same. We had the testing in the library. My assistant had to go cover someone again. I had to go sub for a class during advisory. And I am still working on enrolling students into second semester virtual classes and getting final grades for their first semester virtual classes. I took a little time to do some stuff with new books, added barcodes to textbooks, checked some classroom set books out to a teacher. There are so many teachers out. In the district closer to where I live, where my brother lives, that school district ended up closing Thursday and Friday of this week because they said they will not have enough staff to cover those days.

Wednesday, the same. Alone in the library. Plus having to go sub for an advisory class. However Wednesday night I got to go see the movie Moonfall early because I am considered an investor in AMC theaters. I own a part of a share of their stock through the app RobinHood. I should try to buy a full share I think. The movie was a lot of fun!

Thursday I was still alone in the library, and while it was still kind of busy, I am getting closer to being done with the online school enrollments so that is nice! I got to take the new books from the last order and do a little display.

Friday was a little slower. I was pretty much done with enrolling the virtual students, so that was nice. I was still alone in the library, but was able to get all the books from the past two weeks completely checked back in and got about half of them shelved.

Saturday early in the morning, about the time my dogs usually wake me up to go outside, around 1 am, my vertigo seemed to be back. Even though I now know I shouldn’t just lay around the house and hope it goes away, I have to get up and move and go about like normal or it gets worse. But I refused to not go ahead and sleep until when I wanted to sleep in on a Saturday morning. Then I made sure to get out and about on Saturday to try to keep it from getting worse. It helped for the most part. I went to a thrift store and an antique store and found an old wooden soda bottle crate. I like to use those for bookmarks in my library. And I also went and got some cookies since I ate one a week last week and they seemed to be good luck for my Chiefs winning. Or not, I might be a little superstitious. lol

I also bought an Iced Tea maker. My principal has one at school in the little kitchen area in my office. And I’ve been thinking I need to maybe try switching to tea. While I’ll still want it sweet for now, I think it is the type of thing I could eventually work on drinking less and less sweet.

Books Finished

I adored the first two so much. They were both for reviews this past week. The third one was an audiobook that was funny for the most part, but I didn’t quite get the ending or maybe it felt like we were left hanging. But I did enjoy it. Will be posting a review of it next month. The last one I got behind on reading and while I posted a promo post on Friday, I didn’t have it finished in time to review. Even if I had gone ahead and done an early review without finishing it, I would have only given it a 3 star rating. But instead I finished it Friday night and ended up rating it at a 4 star, so I will post the review later.

New Books

Physical Books:

I did buy one that I mentioned last week based on a TikTok author that I follow that also bought my novella.

And then an author I loved let us know in her newsletter she was kind of adding some alternate covers to a series I am loving. As much as I enjoy the sexy covers with hot men on them, I also kind of like the ones without them. So I immediately ordered them when I saw it, and they already came!

I also got some swag in the mail from the new Helena Hunting store along with a coupon. Now I’m going to go buy more stuff. lol

ARCs:

The publisher reached out to me a little bit ago and asked if I’d be interested in this one. So I’ll be reading and reviewing around the time it comes out.

Audiobooks:

none

E-galleys:

This is for a review tour in March.

Free e-books:

Several free e-books, but a few are from authors I’ve already read, so might get to them sooner!

What I’m Watching

I mentioned that I got to go see the movie Moonfall this past week. It was a fun action-science fiction movie.

Oh yeah, at the beginning of the movie the song Africa by Toto is playing and he sings the lyrics the way I always thought they were: “I miss the rains down in Africa.” I learned about two years ago when the song was playing at the bookstore where I worked that it was actually “I bless the rains”. Which doesn’t make sense to me, but whatever. And he was corrected about the lyrics and he agreed with me. Not a big deal, just was something that happened to me recently so it stuck out!

I actually would love to see the Chiefs and the Rams in the Superbowl! Reminds me of the I-70 World series between the Royals and Cardinals, because the Rams used to be in St. Louis. lol Hope your team wins as well!

  1. Hi there Lisa! You have a new cover! Right?? It looks gorgeous.

I had vertigo once on a holiday of all times. I was man down for over 3 days and the whole holiday of 10 days was a disaster. It’s a horrible feeling. But glad you are feeling better already. Please take care of yourself and rather just read all your stunning books you have!

Have a good week ahead and good luck at school.

The bad thing with vertigo is sometimes it makes it hard to read the books on my e-reader. 🙁 It is not a fun time! Thanks for visiting!

  2. Congrats on your team winning! I don’t follow sports at all. When I was in school, we had a library club where students would help the librarian with stuff like checking in/out books, putting them away, etc. As a senior I even watched the desk a few times while the librarian and her assistant were out helping teachers or what not. I loved it and it actually makes me sad to know that it is no longer a thing. Anyway hope you have a great week.

Turns out my team didn’t win this week. No Superbowl for us this year. 🙁 Oh well, in a way I’m kind of glad to be done with this football season. I would love to have students assist, but there isn’t that much to do these days. Even asking them to shelve sometimes though can be a disaster. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. i couldn’t figure out who to root for. i have been loving and following mahomey since his college days. i think he will be a goat. BUT mr wonderful and i both did some game day working for the bills when we lived in rochester, so they hold a place on teams to root for list. thank goodness no matter what i said or did it couldn’t affect the game…or could it? i am also ecstatic that the rams are in. i am a detroit lions/stafford fan. even have his jersey to prove it. lol i would love to see him get the accolades he deserves by going to the super bowl. maybe that will wake up detroit ??????

  4. Danielle Hammelef

My parents are hyped about the Chiefs too and will be cheering them on. My sister-in-law has severe vertigo and has missed work and family events because of it. I hope today is a much better day for you. Those cookies look delicious!

    • Lisa Mandina

The vertigo is never fun. But as I’ve learned, not giving in and just laying around helps. I have to be up and moving or it really just spirals out of control. The cookies were delicious, but not good luck as my Chiefs lost today. 🙁

  5. Louise Hallett

The cookies look amazing – I hope they tasted just as good! Where did January go? It took ages at first but I’ve definitely lost 10 days somewhere.

Enjoy those books, I do love the new covers on the Teagan Hunter books.

    • Lisa Mandina

The cookies were delicious! Not good luck for my Chiefs unfortunately though. Yeah, January is over, but it seemed so long even as it sped by! Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I’m glad the virtual student registration is finishing up. If it’s a short time period, it isn’t as bad. I’ve heard of lots of schools having to close because of too many teachers and students being down with covid. I’m glad my daughter chose all online this semester. We are happy to stay home and I’m back to Instacart deliveries or curbside pickups. I hope this week is better.

Our online school is different from when all students were home. It is through an online program, and most of our kids that decided to stay virtual aren’t being successful with it. They’re choosing or just not doing the work. I’ve seen kids with 3% for online. When I had in person classes, I NEVER had kids with that low. Even just being in class got them some kind of points for class participation. They might have still failed, but it was a higher percentage. Oh well. That’s our world today! Thanks for visiting!

  7. I am still getting used to the new scheme of your blog! I really like it (and I know I mentioned it before, but I had forgotten until I clicked on it again, LOL)! I think I downloaded “So Not My Thing” as well. Have a good week!

Yeah, I love the new cover! Debating if I need to make it a little smaller though, it does take a bit before you get to the actual blog content as big as it is. lol Thanks for visiting!

  8. Yay for the Chiefs! I always liked them even though they’re not my team or geographically that close lol. And cool about the jeans to celebrate!

I like those old wooden soda crates. Something nostalgic about them, I always check them out at the thrift and antique stores.

Well unfortunately the Chiefs didn’t play like they needed to today and so our season is over. In a way I’m okay with it, as I’m not really a big football fan, just like to cheer on my team! Thanks for stopping by!

  9. That is pretty much my assessment of the month as well–it flew by in some ways but in others in really dragged. I hope the staffing situation improves. We are struggling in my agency too–so many call offs. Everyone who is able to work has been putting in so much overtime that we are all very tired. I am sorry your vertigo has been bothering you. My husband suffers from it from time to time. Your new books look so good! Falling for the Competition really appeals to me. I hope you have a great week and enjoy your reading!

    • Lisa Mandina

Vertigo is such a pain because it is hard to know for sure when it is coming on, can’t pinpoint it, and then it is also hard to treat, not much to do about it. sorry your husband has to suffer sometimes too. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, it was a sad loss, but your Bengals deserved the win! The Chiefs did not play up to their normal standards the second half at all, and your quarterback is really good! Congrats on the win, and I might actually cheer for the Bengals to win the Superbowl.

  10. I’m always down for cookies! And when superstitions/good luck rituals involve cookies? That’s a win even if it’s a loss 😉

January has flown by but it has been a super draining month… I’ll be glad to say it’s February tomorrow!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yes, ready for February, because then we’re closer to March and spring break. lol It was a loss, but at least I got yummy cookies. Although they are a little bit too sweet today after our loss yesterday. Thanks for stopping by!

  11. Football was crazy last night! I’m not much of a sportsfan. I usually just go along rooting for whoever my family is rooting for. Lol. I’m usually in it for the commercials when it comes to the Super Bowl! Hopefully they’ll be better this year than in the past couple of years.

Hope you enjoy your new reads and books lined up for this week!

    Here’s my Monday Wrap-up

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, my team is my team because of family and loyalty to my hometown. Otherwise I don’t really care about football or most sports. This year I’ll be happy I guess to skip the Superbowl since we didn’t make it. I can just have a normal Sunday night. You are right, the commercials haven’t been that great lately either. Thanks for visiting!
