Desperate to shake the hex, Maggie has no choice but to seek out the help of Joel Tomlins, a rebellious classmate who’s descended from Blackheath’s most powerful line of witches. After breaking all of his coven’s conventions to help her, Joel discovers that the curse isn’t as bad as Maggie fears. In fact, it’s much, much worse.

Review:
When I finished reading the book, I posted something on Goodreads about one problem I had with the book. It’s been a littel time since then, and now I can’t quite remember what that was.  Really I am thankful to Xpresso Book Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this title, because I ended up really enjoying it.

There are two main characters that we get the story told by, Maggie and Joel.  Maggie lives in a school dorm, not having parents to live with where her school is.  Joel also has a problem family.  Up until just recently Joel lived with his older brother, and younger brothers, and no parents. Their mom had left several years ago, she’d come back once in awhile, then leave again.  Their dad just came back when they found out that Joel’s older brother is basically the “chosen one”.  Turns out Joel’s family are witches.  Before they found out who the older brother was,  their dad had been away looking for their mother, leaving Joel and his brothers to take care of themselves.  In the past Joel and Maggie had been friends. But as they got older, and circumstances changed in Joel’s life, the friendship kind of disappeared.

The book kind of starts with a part that happens at the end, and then we flashback and get into the story.  Maggie has somehow picked up a curse. At first she thinks that Joel must have put it there. But he swears it wasn’t him, and soon he tries to help her get rid of it.  Only they find it is a powerful spell, put there by another witch, one that is trying to use Maggie to become a stronger coven.  It’s the time of the year when all the groups come together, part of this is a big carnival going on in the town.  Things get worse, when Joel can’t figure out how to get rid of the spell, his trying causes the person who has put the spell on her to give Joel an ultimatum, he must give up his life, or that of the chosen one, in order to make up for what he’s done to his spell.  Through all of the story, Maggie and Joel will start to get their friendship back, and at the age they are, of course part of that means they do have an attraction to each other.

I liked the characters, Maggie and Joel for sure.  But Joel’s family members are also very interesting.  His younger brothers and the older witches that hang around, supposedly some distant relations.  The witch factor, with men being the witches, was a definite change from a lot of stories, so I enjoyed that as well.  I am definitely hoping for a sequel to this, as I feel that we were left with too many questions, and as far as I know, it should be available later this year.  I highly suggest this as a unique witch story.
