Weekly Wrap-Up #219 – April 13th, 2025

I’m connecting once again with Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer.

Sunday was another cold morning. So perfect for sleeping in. Especially since Argyle had been acting like his neck was bothering him and I was worried about him. Got up and did a tiny bit of blogging before going to lunch with my author friend. After lunch I stopped by the B&N by the restaurant we were at to pre-order the special edition DVD of Outlander Season 7, and also decided to grab a physical copy of the audiobook I’m listening to. I got home and did a little blogging, while my neighbor was mowing, which I probably should have done since it warmed up, but I didn’t feel like it. Decided to take a nap instead. Then I went to have dinner at my mom’s house, where we looked at some of the excursions for the cruise, so we would be prepared to pick them when we are finally able to at the end of the month. I found my prom pic to share with the students!

Before I go much further, I’m going to leave most things to do with work out of here from now on. And just share this, which says it all. And just keeps going through my head over and over for now.

Monday was a cold morning again. I think my neighbors are still sleeping at this house for now. Ended up leaving work around 9 am and taking a sick day because of how it went. I mowed in the afternoon and took my car in to get the oil changed. Got some calls about possible interviews for new library jobs, and so my mom and I went to look for something for me to wear. It’s always nice to have something new to wear to an interview. I found a nice dress with a shrug. Then she and I had dinner. Got an interview for an elementary library job in the district right next to where I work now set up for next Wednesday.

Tuesday was also a cold morning. I did come in to a bunch of nice cards from the special education kids on my desk saying happy librarian week. I hung them all on my bulletin board! After school I went to vote, basically just for a city councilor, school board members, and a school improvement tax. I had someone come by and look to see about clearing out some vines that are growing on my front porch and some other stuff on my fence in the back yard. Then I had a Zoom meeting for the AASL committee I’m on to prepare for the Zoom “book club” even we are supposed to host Thursday night. I did get an interview for a middle school library job scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Wednesday was a nicer day weather-wise. Work was a shitshow. I feel like my interview went well, and it would be a place I think I would love to work and feel so fulfilled being able to help students. Came home and hung with the dogs and watched the usual Wednesday night tv.

Thursday I thought was a really nice day, which made it perfect for the fire drill we had at school. Work was pretty sucky again. After school I went to my friend’s house to play with puppies, because puppies make everything better. In the evening I had a Zoom book club that I was helping run, which made me so nervous because over 100 people signed up, and I was supposed to be the leader of the high school breakout room. Which I’ve never been in charge of something like that on a Zoom before, so I was nervous! Here are some puppy pictures.

Friday was another nice weather day. I was looking forward to eating lunch in my car again like I did Thursday, but then because of the craziness at school going on, which I’m not even going to attempt to explain, other than to say the whole English department called out today, so I ended up having to substitute for one of the teachers for one hour, of course my lunch hour. Came home to see they were showing my neighbor’s house. But they left shortly after I got home and they then let the dogs out and Argyle got to run and bark and play with his friends for a bit. I’d hoped to hear about the library job I interviewed for on Wednesday by today, because they said they wanted to make a decision by the end of the week, but I didn’t hear anything sadly. My mom and I went and had a quick dinner before going to see a movie. My peonies are starting to come up, and I think they usually bloom around the beginning of May?

Saturday morning was beautiful weather wise. Noticed my neighbors were up earlier than they usually get up on the weekends when I took the dogs out around 8 am. Turned out they were having a garage sale. As you do before you move so you hopefully don’t have to pack and take it all with you, lol. I didn’t have to leave till around 11:30 to drop the dogs off and get on my way down to the library conference since check in time wasn’t until 4 pm. That was kind of weird to not have to just get up and get going. I put my state taxes in the mailbox to go out before I left as well. Dropped the dogs off around 11:30 or so, then headed down to the resort at Lake of the Ozarks where the library convention is. I got another chip on my windshield on the way down. I think it’s been about a month since the last one I got! Grrr. Then I was very disappointed that for the first year since I’d been coming back to this event, I got a room not only without a balcony that I could sit on and enjoy the weather and read, but the window was a view of a ramp coming to the back of the building and the mini-golf course right back behind that. So I’m wondering if I’ll get less reading done this trip. They have outdoor areas I could go sit, but then I can’t be in my comfy pjs with no bra and no shoes and my feet up on a chair. lol. I might get more blog commenting done I guess if I’m just sitting in my hotel room. I did go to the hotel bar for dinner, then sat on the outdoor patio and read till the sun wasn’t shining on it anymore and it got a little cool. Finished up my online class work in my hotel room before bed.

First was a graphic novel I borrowed from my library to read and talk about for a Zoom event on Thursday. Second was an egalley for a blog tour review also on Thursday. Third was the audiobook I was listening to and finished on my way to the conference this weekend. Finally was the e-galley I was reading for a review this coming week.

I didn’t have a ton of stuff planned for posts this week, so that was about it, plus a review from a book I finished last week.

ARCs:

none

Audiobooks:

Got this on the Libby app from the library. One of my English teachers recommended it, and I guess it’s been a big thing on TikTok? I listened to most of it this week, should be finishing on my drive home on Tuesday, as I only have about 5 % left after my drive to the conference.

Bookish Stuff:

none

E-galleys:

I signed up for this through the author’s newsletter, forgetting I am also on her review team? But I’m excited to read this later this month.

Free E-books:

Saw the first one was a freebie that Anne on Books of My Heart got last Sunday so I went and grabbed it, then the second one was also free on Amazon.

Physical books:

I decided I wanted a physical copy and stopped and bought it at B&N last Sunday.

All the usual: Survivor, Amazing Race, Ghosts, and of course extra time spent rewatching Outlander. Friday night I went to see a movie with my mom. Like the last movie I watched, this one was one that was about someone with a psychological issue, and so it left me wondering how much was real, how much was just in their head, etc.

First is for the author’s review team, second is an e-galley.

I am currently at the school librarian conference right now until Tuesday. Came down last night of course as I said, so had one night to just relax in my room and read. It will be mid-April this week too. How is April going for you so far? What are you looking forward to this week?

  1. Sorry to hear work is getting bad again. Keeping my fingers crossed for you on these interviews. Hopefully there will be good news soon. Definitely remember working in a toxic environment where everyday just about left me in tears. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Aww! Cute puppies! They are adorable! I hope the conference goes well and is fun…? Are those fun? Lol. I know they are work related so I don’t know if fun is had. I hope it’s good in whatever way it can be at least! Lol.

Nice new reads! These are new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

I’m trying to work on some things to help me at work. Like counting to 3 before I reply to any of my admin so I can just answer the way they want and not try to do what I think should be done, or even suggest what I think. Ugh. I enjoy library conferences because I get so many ideas and get to talk to other librarians who are as enthusiastic about the field as I am and would like to be at my job. Hoping maybe this week will bring me a change in my career outlook. If not, I just have to keep figuring out how to make it. I’ll be over to check out your post in a bit!

  2. Oh my gosh puppy time, I am so jealous.. that sounds like such a fun mid-week stress reliever. Peonies are actually SO hard to kill once they are established because their root system is made up of tubers and they normally break before you get them all out so they just keep going 🙂 a blessing and a curse for some. We just got more snow, so ours have a few more weeks before they start coming up. Yours are looking great!

Puppy time is the best! The ONLY bad thing about if I get the job I applied for last week, that I really want, is that I would not be able to stop by after work to see puppies as easily. It would be a drive in the opposite direction. But I wouldn’t mind it! That is so interesting about peonies! I didn’t know, but no wonder they came over to the other side of the fence from where the bush was. lol. Works for me as if I had tried to plant them or anything, it would die, lol. Me and my black thumb. Ugh, snow again! I mean I love the snowy season and all the snow days I get as a teacher, but I’m ready for spring weather now. It seems like spring gets skipped and we go straight to hot summer weather so often, which I don’t like.

I feel like something’s got to give, right? I do love this conference, it makes me so happy to be around fellow librarians who love their job and it’s their calling, like I feel it is mine! I don’t know when I’ll get to that book, but it looks good! I hope you can find it as a freebie too!

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! I’m feeling less positive since I didn’t hear from them last week and they told me they wanted to decide by the end of last week. But I’ve still got another interview coming up this week, so not giving up! There’s got to be a better place out there for me where I can actually do the things that students need a librarian to do.

  3. I hope you get good news and land one of these jobs. For now, enjoy your conference and books. My peonies are up and I think they will bloom in May. In Iowa, it was early June. Love the prom pic!

Yeah, I think my peonies are usually bloomed before Memorial Day every year since I’ve been at my current house. Just had lunch and am ready to start hanging out with all the librarians in about an hour or so!

    • Lisa Mandina

I say Woman in the Yard is definitely a wait and watch one. It was good, but not probably pay for the theater good? So far the library convention is good!

  4. I hope you are enjoying the conference, Lisa and good luck on the interviews. I hope you get one of the positions you applied for. I love peonies and yours look like you will get a lot of flowers. Enjoy your upcoming week.

    • Lisa Mandina

I do tend to get a lot of peonies! I never take them inside because they always have so many ants on them. But my neighbors like to take the ones on the other side of the fence.

    • Lisa Mandina

Well, with the first two days of the week being at a library conference, at least that part of the week will be good, lol.

  5. Your cruise sounds wonderful! Be sure to check out other options for excursions besides ones offered by the cruise ship (Viator is excellent and has smaller groups and cheaper and still ensure you’ll be back in time for departure). Have a great week Lisa!

    • Lisa Mandina

Good to know! I’m just worried if we don’t use one through the cruise they won’t get us back in time, but I’ve used Viator before, so might have to check that out. Thanks!

  6. I am so sorry you are having a rough time at work. My fingers are crossed for you that one of the other jobs works out! In my experience, they *say* they want to let people know by X date, but they rarely do! So I am holding out hope for you. And if not this one, then the next one. Plus, we only have 30 days left so you are probably around there too, so just remember, the end is in sight! Incidentally, I have the same problem with keeping my mouth shut heh.

    • Lisa Mandina

I’m hoping that is what is going on and I’ll get a call this week? Yes, I think we have 27 school days actually left, yay! Well, I’m not counting Monday or Tuesday since I’m at the conference and then Good Friday is a day off too, lol. I feel like if they’d let me be a part of the discussion for the plans that use my space, I could save my questions/comments for then, and it would seem so right in the moment that I’m refusing to do something, when really I’m just trying to make it work better. It’s so hard to keep my mouth shut, but I’m learning I have to work on it.

    • Lisa Mandina

The conference has been pretty good! Lots of ideas! Just sucks that I know probably no one will want to work with me where I am, or at least on the admin side that is.

  7. Sorry work sucks so bad. I’m sending prayer and positive vibes that you find a new job soon. I hope you were able to read some on your conference. My weekend was busy with family events and on Sunday I saw the musical Shucked in Boston. OMG – it was sooooo funny! Now it’s back to work.

    • Lisa Mandina

I did get some reading done! Not as much as usual, I feel like not having the balcony to just sit outside on and read might have cut into that. If I’m sitting inside the room I tend to gravitate towards my laptop and blogging. I’ve not heard of Shucked, I’ll have to go look that up!

  8. I am sorry to hear your work sucks so much, I wish you could find a better place to work as it seems to be one thing after another and not a fun place to work where you’re currently at. Good luck with your upcoming interviews and that’s nice you got something new to wear for it. Glad to hear that interview you had on Wednesday went well, fingers crossed you get the job! I hope your library convention goes well, but that’s a shame you don’t have a balcony and no nice view out of your window either. How long does the convention last?

Those puppies look so cute. I got Love at Second Sight pre-ordered in audio as I enjoyed the two books I read by that author. i hope we both enjoy that one!

    • Lisa Mandina

Sadly I did not get that job. Love at Second Sight was really good! Hope you enjoy it. My review should be up either tomorrow or Friday!
