I’m linking up with Top Ten Tuesday, which was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl. Check out upcoming Top Ten themes on Jana’s blog!
So I got a bit behind on a review book and had to postpone that review till tomorrow. And I really liked last week’s topic, but had a blog tour review scheduled that day, so I skipped it. So I’m going with last week’s theme today, my favorite books set in another time, and I ended up with 11 instead of just 10. I’ll bet you can guess at least one of them!
First are the ones set in the past:

- Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, all of the series, although I’m only on book 3.
- Legacy of Kings by Eleanor Herman – I loved this series, although I think I still need to read the last one, because the publisher stopped sending physical ARCs and I wasn’t good about always making sure to read all I requested on Netgalley.
- Prisoner of Night and Fog by Anne Blankman – I loved this one so much! And the sequel was good as well.
- The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh – another I got an ARC to the first book, but not the second, so I still need to read that sequel.
- These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong – Loved this alternate fantasy/sci-fi/horror historical fiction and it’s sequel. I still need to read the spinoff series though.
- Into the Dim by Janet B. Taylor – okay, this is the book that got me finally ready to read Outlander after listening to people talk about it for years.
Now the ones set in the future:

- The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi – is this that far in the future? Or just a different timeline? I don’t know, but I loved this one and it got me hooked on this author!
- Left Behind by Tim LaHaye – this was a series I read and loved and actually would reread at a time when I didn’t work at a bookstore or get tons of ARCs. I still think about these books a lot.
- Divergent by Veronica Roth – even with the disappointing conclusion to the series, it will always be a favorite.
- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – books better than the movies of course. And this was actually my first official review as a blogger!
- All These Things I’ve Done by Gabrielle Zevin – I got this ARC at one of the BEAs I attended I believe and I loved this whole prohibition but with chocolate storyline.
Final Thoughts:
So, would you pick any of these as favorites for you? What were some of your favorites if you did this post last week?
How fun to know that The Hunger Games was your first review on the blog! I want to read the Scalzi. Yes, I read Divergent and refused to read the other books when I heard what happened at the end of the series! No thanks!
I mean the ending did suck, but, also, it was kind of realistic if you ask me. And I always say it is the author’s story, so I guess they can do whatever they want, unfortunately then some readers won’t like it. But that’s why there are so many other books out there! I did not care for the Divergent movies at all.
I remember reading Left Behind years ago and enjoying the series. I mean I didn’t really accept the theology but it was enjoyable. The series reminded me a bit of Dan Brown books in style.
Yeah, some of the theology was out there, but I read it as a fantasy type of story as opposed to a true religious type of thing, so enjoyed it because of that I think.
I seem to be more attracted to the future ones.
I think I prefer contemporary overall, but then can do some both past and future if the story connects for me!
Kaiju Preservation Society was on a few different lists last week, I believe!
I keep wondering if it counts as another time since it is kind of a different universe for Covid maybe? But I still picked it!
I read a lot of historical fiction, but have not read any of the past stories. I have read two (Divergent and Hunger Games) of the future ones though.
I’m guessing Outlander might be a little too violent compared to some of what you read? It definitely has a lot of dark in it.
OOoh nice ones! I LOOOVED Into the Dim! Always devastated that the series was cancelled right before the final book! Ack! That happens too often for me! Divergent made my list as well! Great picks!
I know, I needed that last book in that series!
Great list Lisa! You’ve done a great job in this challenge.
Thanks!
I usually prefer books set in the future, and I love that you included Hunger Games!
Had to include it, especially when I realized it was my very first review on my blog.
This was a fun topic. I have Outlander on my shelves and I enjoyed The Hunger Games. I went with the Regency period for this prompt. Happy weekend!
I love the show so much, and the books are really good too, just so long! Plus they are mass market paperback size, so the print is kind of small and they can get hard to hold and read. I like that you were able to pick one specific time period for your prompt!
As soon as I saw this post I knew you’d pick Outlander! I would say my favorite future story is Dune. But so many of my favorites are fantasy and don’t have a specific time because it’s not really in our universe.
LOL! Of course that was my first pick for the topic. And I was unsure about some of the books I first thought of because fantasy isn’t really a different time period, but in another universe.
I’ve read Left Behind and Outlander series though I still need to get to the most recent Outlander released. I want to read the Prisoner of Night and Fog and Wrath of the Dawn ones which have been on my pile forever. I’ve got the Divergent and Hungry Games ones, but just haven’t worked my mood back to YA dystopian style stuff in recent years.
Great list, Lisa!
I’m still on book 3 of Outlander, lol. Watched them all, but working on reading the books. I have trouble getting back into YA dystopia even though I devoured it back in the day!
