Weekly Wrap-Up #213 – March 2nd, 2025

Posted March 2, 2025 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 32 Comments

I’m connecting up once again with Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer.

Sunday I woke up to a sunny and warmer morning than we’d had for the last week. I was able to go out in the afternoon without a coat or jacket, it was finally over 50 degrees! I really needed just a day at home, even after having 3 days at home for snow/frigid temps last week. But I didn’t get out of bed till 9 am because the dogs had woken me up like every 2 hours the night before. So I got up and did some blogging after that. Then I had weekly coffee with my dad, stepmom, and youngest sister at noon, we’d missed the last two weeks due to the weather. I came home afterwards and did some more blogging and then sat and snuggled on the couch with the dogs.

Monday was a full day back to school. Busy, but not too crazy. Kind of the calm before the storm knowing a lot is going on the rest of the week. Leaving school was wonderful weather again, no coat or jacket needed. When I got home I finished the review book I was reading so I could get my review posted for Tuesday morning. Then I drove and picked my mom up and we went to one of our new favorite Mexican restaurants for dinner. We went back to her house afterwards to book a couple of tours for when we go to NOLA at the end of March. Then I went home and did a tiny bit of blogging before relaxing on the couch with the dogs.

Tuesday was kind of busy with two teacher having to have their classes in the library since their classrooms were being used for ACT testing. Also the person who comes and I have to call down students from 8-11 am was there and will also be back on Thursday. I ordered Taco John’s through DoorDash again since it was payday. Ran by the grocery store to get the dogs their chicken on the way home from work. Got home and paid bills. Which went a lot quicker with all the credit cards paid off. Will just be paying on the 15th to the HELOC. Another beautiful weather day in the 50s! Started a new e-galley that was so-so, debated on whether to continue.

Wednesday was a tiny bit cooler, and a lot windier. But still I could go without a jacket or coat outside. It was a potluck birthday day for the office people who had birthdays this month, and since they have it in my library office, I get to participate, lol. There was also testing in the library, and it was kind of a mess because another teacher had to cancel a speaker in the library earlier this week, and they thought they could have them in the auditorium, and then got kicked out of there because of another test going on. It was crazy. Tried to start a new book since the one yesterday was not working, but didn’t get much time on my lunch break to read, but it was better than the one from the day before so far. I came home and did a little bit of blogging. Then my mom and I went to dinner at a new Chinese restaurant that was supposed to have Springfield Cashew Chicken that is my favorite dish. Then, new season of Survivor to watch!

Thursday I took a sick day off work because I didn’t sleep well Wednesday night, my nose was stuffed up and it was hard to breathe. I’d have needed to wear a mask at work, and since I was already having issues with breathing because of my stuffed up nose, figured I’d rather just stay home. It was a little cooler, but still nice like the day before. I did some blogging and just resting around the house. Did do some laundry that I’d been waiting for it to warm up before I used my washer since those pipes are on the outside of the house and I was afraid to use it when it was below freezing.

Friday I went back to school since I knew the library should be empty most of the day now that the week of testing was basically over. There were a LOT of teachers absent. I did have one teacher ask to bring a couple of his classes in just so they could do an activity to spread out that they couldn’t do in a classroom as well, so I still was able to stay in my little area in the library. On the way home from work I stopped at CVS pharmacy and bought a Covid/flu test. It showed as negative for both. But of course I will take the other one in the box on Sunday just to be safe. I went through the drive-thru at McDonald’s to get my first Shamrock shake of the year!

Saturday it was cooler, temperatures felt like in the 20s again in the morning with the wind. I had a Zoom meeting for the Intellectual Freedom Award Committee I’m on for the American Association for School Librarians at 9 am. We voted to pick the award winner this year after discussing applications. Then I went to get my TSA Pre-Check now that I had money to afford the $85 fee. Wanted to have it for sure before the cruise this summer since the rest of my family has it who is going. My nephew’s basketball team (he’s 7 years old) won their tournament game Friday night, so they played again Saturday night. I decided to just stay home as I wanted to continue to get rested and not worry about anyone getting sick since they’d been sick a few weeks ago. I also had reached out on the Next Door app to get someone to come fix the siding on the side of my house that was coming off, so I found someone to do it for a reasonable price and had them come do that for me.

Both were e-galleys, the first for a blog tour on Tuesday and the second just from the publisher, but won’t get the review posted till Monday.

My L-L-L part 2 post came out this week as well as my monthly DNF post. Saturday was my February wrap-up post.

ARCs:

First was an ARC I won from a Goodreads giveaway. It comes out in June I think? Second is another ARC I got from the publisher, not sure, but maybe I signed up in the Shelf Awareness newsletter? This one comes out in July.

Audiobooks:

So both of the audiobooks I got from the library last week were no-gos for me, didn’t like the first one, and the other one just was more a type I’d prefer to read than listen to. So my hold for the first one above became available from Libby and I downloaded to listen to it. The second one I already have a freebie of the e-book, but the author was offering a freebie of the audiobook in their newsletter so I went ahead and grabbed that.

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

This is for a blog tour review in April for Rachel’s Random Resources.

Free E-books:

I’d been reading this in the author’s newsletter, but then before it is officially published, if you are one of her Patreon members she sends the bookfunnel file for us to finish it. Plus I’ve already ordered the box with the physical book, as I love that cover (better than this e-book cover) and all the goodies.

Physical books:

This was a finished copy I won over on Young Adult Books Central. I’ll be donating it to my school library. It really makes me think of one of my favorite movies as a teenager, Adventures in Babysitting.

Finally a new season of Survivor started this week! Enjoyed the new episode of Ghosts and finally finding out why Isaac hates Alexander Hamilton. Always fitting in rewatches of Outlander too. I’m back at season 3 again which is the book I’m still working on. Saturday night I decided to watch the Marked Men movie based on the book Rule by Jay Crownover. I wasn’t a fan. In fact I’ve got another discussion post idea coming after watching it.

Both of these were e-galleys, first one from the author, second for a blog tour review this Friday.

I’m hoping to post a Discussion this week as well.

And…… it’s March! I’m so ready for my spring break at the end of the month and my trip to New Orleans with my mom. Oh yeah, I realized the hotel I’d picked for our NOLA trip was a little bit farther from the French Quarter area on Tuesday, so my mom and I rebooked with another hotel off of Bourbon street.

And other craziness at work, the guy they hired to be my library clerk earlier in the year when my first one went to the office, well, they’d had to move him to ISS when the ISS person quit a couple weeks ago. I guess he might be fired? Not sure exactly why, but I’ve heard that he was letting the kids watch. movies in ISS, play video games, letting other kids come in and hang out, etc. One rumor is that he supposedly was inappropriate with a female student. I feel like it had to have been something pretty serious, because he was gone right away. And people have said when they emailed him they came back as undeliverable.

February was okay for me, but I’m ready to move on to some spring weather too I hope. Are you ready for March? How was your last week of February?

  1. Our weather continues to go back and forth a bit! I can’t remember last Sunday’s weather as I caught a cold somewhere in my weekend and was pretty much out of it all week long! We did have a rare warm day Friday of this week but then it went back to colder temps again Saturday. It’ll be a miracle if I can kick this cold to the curb what with these drastically changing temperatures! Glad to hear the week was pretty normal for you. Sorry to hear you got sick as well! I’m thinking I caught mine when I was with my niece at Build a Bear and then the playground in the mall surrounded by wayyy too many children! Lol. Sorry to hear you lost your library clerk again. Seems to keep happening to you when they hire one and then place them elsewhere at the school. Hopefully you can get another one and keep them! NOLA ought to be fun! I went there sooo long ago for a book convention. Twice actually and got to do some sightseeing prior to the bookish fun! It’s definitely a sight to see!

Nice new reads too! All new to me ones but I hope you enjoy each and every one of them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

This up and down temp weather is probably part of the problem with me being sick too. Hoping it gets gone this week! I love NOLA, I’ve been 3 other times, twice were for book events, but always time to sight see when I’m there!

  2. Our weather is up and down for this time of year. We did have some warm days which was nice and the boys loved the sun being out. They also like that it is staying daylight longer. I feel like I didn’t read as much in February as I wanted but I got hung up with a certain book and I think it slowed me down. I also really want to buy the new TJ Klune book and read it but it’s hardback and I have it on hold through Libby (but it will be months until I get it). I may just get it for Kindle because I think because I want to read it so badly, I’m not picking other books up. Is that crazy? Hope you are enjoying planning your month-end trip. I bet you and your mother have a blast! Hope you see some vampires – from a distance of course.

I totally get what you’re saying about why you’re having trouble getting into a book! I think once I have a DNF, then I’m wary about the next review book if it’s not one I requested myself. I have a favorite author’s book for a street team read coming up, but I know it is a much older man romance, and those give me the icks! So I’m dreading starting it. But afraid to not read it and get kicked off the street team. Although I doubt that will happen. So we’ll see. Lol, I’m hoping for ghosts in NOLA!

  3. OMG your library clerk saga is ridiculous. That was a big lie when you got this job, that you would have a clerk. It’s nice to have your credit cards cleaned up, now you just have to not run them up again. I’m sorry you didn’t feel well and hope you are feeling much better now and more this week ahead. My daughter like the various flavored shakes. Is the shamrock one a mint flavor?

I want to cancel most of the credit cards so I don’t have the temptation! But for now I’ve gone in and shut them off on the websites so I can’t use them, and tried to take them off Amazon, PayPal, or any other place I might have had them listed to use. The Shamrock Shake is kind of minty. Not a lot, because I don’t like mint and wouldn’t drink it, but it has a slight minty taste, not like toothpaste or anything thankfully.

  4. Awwww my Sissie looked forward to the Shamrock Shake every year.

Good thing you renewed your TSA Pre-check. Imagine if you didn’t and all the rest of the family were standing there, waiting on you, glaring…hee hee.

That Chinese food looks so gooooooooooooooooooooood. There are 10 billion Chinese restaurants in my neighborhood but I haven’t found the one that is MINE yet, if you know what I mean. I miss the Chinese buffet-style restaurants in Arkansas. Does L.A. even HAVE any buffet-style??? I need to do some research.

    • Lisa Mandina

It’s funny that I look forward to them when I don’t like mint flavored anything else, lol! I actually haven’t ever had TSA Pre-check, so it’s about time I got it! lol. Yeah, they’d all be ahead in the lounges waiting on me to get through the line, they wouldn’t have waited a bit. I do love good Chinese food. It is true, there are restaurants that are your favorites! This one was good, but not as good as another one I’ve had delivered before. It seems a lot of buffets have closed since Covid, but there are still one or two around here. Hope you have a good week!

  5. We had a couple nice days here as well! After my recent travel I have been considering the TSA pre check. But, I don’t really travel that much, so I’m not sure it is worth it. That is crazy about the ISS teacher!! There is always 1 like that in every school.

I figure with the two trips I have planned this year, and my mom wanting to do more traveling, it will be worth it for me. It was $85, but it lasts 5 years. We’re supposed to have some nice days this week too, some rain, which I do like a rainy night for sleeping!

  6. Oh fun you’re going to New Orleans! I’d like to visit there at some point. I’ve had TSA Pre-check for many years now and it’s handy. Next time I want to get Global because it works internationally. I love Chinese food. Haven’t found a really good one yet since moving to Northern California.

I have been to NOLA 3 times, this will be the first time with my mom, so I’m looking forward to that! This is the first time I’ll have it, and with two trips this year, and my mom wanting to do some traveling, it will be good to have. Global is interesting. If I were to go visit my sister in Scotland more, it would probably be worth it!

  7. I hope you are feeling better! I am glad it wasn’t COVID. My aunt and uncle have COVID right now and my aunt is in the hospital. She’s immunocompromised and so we’re hoping for the best. I’m sorry for the continued work drama. Sounds like he deserved to be fired if the rumors are true. That book, The Assassin’s Guide to Babysitting had me thinking of The Adventures to Babysitting too. LOL You’ll have to let us know what you think when you read it. I hope you have a good week, Lisa!

    • Lisa Mandina

Oh no! I hope your aunt is okay and gets out of the hospital soon. I don’t know when I’ll get to the book since I’m putting it in the school library for now, but will definitely post a review when/if I do!

  8. I visited NOLA many, many years ago for a book con. It was August and hot! We are going to visit my family in Florida in a week and I’m looking forward to some warm weather!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I think I went to a book con there in September, and it was still sooooo hot! Florida will be nice this time of year.

    • Lisa Mandina

We had beautiful weather and now maybe some snow tomorrow night too! I’m ready for it to end, but I also wouldn’t say no to another snow day with my cold right now. I’ve been without a library clerk for so long I’m just used to it at this point, although I’m still pretty salty!

    • Lisa Mandina

The first time I went by myself I think, this woman came up and started “shining” my white leather Keds shoes. I told her I didn’t need that and she kept doing it and then still expected me to pay her. I didn’t want to be rude, but guess I should have been! I do love the city and am looking forward to some different tours this time.

  9. Sounds like you had a busy but productive week! Warmer weather must have been a nice change after all that snow and cold. Hope you have a great time planning for your trip to New Orleans!

  10. The weather has been all over the map here too! That Shamrock shake looks delicious and perfect for March! Have a great week Lisa.
