Weekly Wrap-Up #199 – November 24th, 2024

I’m connecting up once again with Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer.

Sunday was a cloudy morning, not as cool as the past few days had been. I got to sleep in, then got up and did some blogging and reading. Had to go to the grocery store too. There was a Chiefs game in the afternoon, and then we didn’t have family dinner because my brother’s family had a church family thing. It was the Chiefs first loss of the season. I’ve been expecting it every week, because going undefeated is just crazy. So while it was sad, I wasn’t too upset knowing it had to come at some point.

Monday was a rainy day all day. We had speakers all day for the freshman seminar class in the library. Today’s theme was education, so there were people from all over the district, including our own principal and our Spanish teacher who won teacher of the year in the district for last year. I got my new books in from my 2nd big order for the year and worked on getting them ready to put out for most of the day. I had to stop by the grocery store on the way home to get stuff to make chili, and then came home and made it, and did some blogging and reading as I had two review posts to have up on Tuesday and wasn’t quite done with one of the books! Here is a picture of my yummy chili with plenty of cheese and my e-book to keep reading!

Tuesday was another pretty good day in the library. It was busy once again with some speakers and also other people meeting with students in our conference room. They delivered some new textbooks that I started adding to the catalog, but didn’t get around to putting barcodes on them yet. I had a follow up doctor visit at the district clinic about my injury last week. I was glad to say I am barely noticing it. But still keeping to the restrictions they put me on. Got home after school and read for a bit, before going to have dinner with my mom. The second offer on my mom’s Branson home fell through. She’s thinking she’ll just keep it for now and try again in the spring. Came home and snuggled on the couch with the pups and rewatched a couple more episodes of Outlander. Since the new episodes start this weekend, I won’t get completely through the series again before I have to jump into the new ones.

Wednesday was another cold day. It was busy in the library again, and I got to go to a teacher’s classroom to teach them about the databases and research. So that was nice. Stopped by Family Dollar on the way home to pick up the pineapple drink mix I like, and found another dachshund blanket. Of course it isn’t as nice as the one I found last week, but still had to buy it, especially for only $5. Spent the night at home with the dogs, watching Survivor and reading. My mom said there was another showing of her Branson house today.

Thursday was really cold, I ended up wearing a jacket, and I usually don’t bother for just trips from my car into a building. I had a meeting for the first half of the day about our school district going to an academy model that is used by other schools in the country. The librarian from the other high school was there and I asked her about things my AP had told me that were not the same as what the librarian had told me about her library clerk. Basically I am correct that my AP was lying/gaslighting me. I got back to the building at noon. They’d kept the lights off in the front of the library but someone had gone and taken a bunch of candy out of my candy jar again, as evidenced by pieces on the floor in front of my desk, as well as they didn’t close the top of it. It was a busy afternoon, followed by our monthly staff meeting after school. Usually it only lasts a half hour, but it was almost an hour. I got home and just was pleased to hang out with the dogs for the night, continue rewatching Outlander, and read.

Friday another cold morning. I had booked classes to teach in the library all day! I subbed for one teacher first hour while she sat in on a student teacher’s observation with her advisor. Then those two teachers came down for 4 other hours and I had their 9th grade students do a library scavenger hunt. The other two hours of the day I had the teacher I’d done database lessons with on Wednesday come down to the library and I did the same lesson with those hours. It was a crazy busy day! I left sweating. I did get observed by my AP for part of one of the hours. I came home and blogged a bit. Then went to have dinner at my brother’s house with my mom so we could discuss Christmas plans. I know it’s early, but I have my dad’s side to arrange with too, and with my sister coming from Scotland with her boyfriend this year, schedules are a little tighter with them.

Saturday was cool in the morning, but it warmed up to I think the 50s? Slept in on my first day off for Thanksgiving break. Went with my mom to the craft fair that she used to always have a booth next to my stepmom’s booth. My stepmom still was there with my dad. We stopped to see them first, and I saw a booth across the hall that was a friend I used to teach with and her adult daughter’s stuffed animals. After walking around and buying a few things, we stopped back by to say goodbye to my dad and stepmom and then my mom and I went and had lunch. I came home and hung out with the dogs and finished the book I needed to post a review of today. In the evening I went and picked up BBQ from one of our favorite restaurants that is near my youngest sister’s new house, and then since she has Netflix and I just cancelled my subscription last month, we binged the new part of the Cobra Kai series. I went home after and basically went to bed and read.

The first 4 were e-galleys and had reviews posted this past week. The last book was a paperback collection of novellas that was probably my first official read of Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon for the year.

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

Two more Gateway possible nominees from the library Libby app. The first one I didn’t get far in, just wasn’t my type of read, so I DNFed it and went on to the second one, although I had to pause it to start Grouch-ish for a blog tour. Then another blogger mentioned that Ali Hazelwood had a short holiday book and I went and grabbed that whole series on Audible. They had a collection for sale instead of the individual titles, but that was a couple dollars more and each one was only $1.39. I even got the Tessa Bailey one, even though I’ve tried two of her books and not been able to get into them. I figured why not give it one more try for that cheap. I also saw another audio only Hazelwood book that was only like $6 so I grabbed it too.

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

Got this advanced audiobook to listen to for a review the first week of December. I started it on the first day of Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon this past week. Second one is for a blog tour that I should have posted the review on Thursday. Third is for an author review team. My review will be the first week of December when it comes out.

Free E-books:

So I really like the football YA series by this author. And I think I tried the first book in this series and couldn’t get into it. But the first one above was free on Amazon, so I grabbed it. All the rest were free on Amazon as well.

Physical books:

The first one goes along with the stickers I got from the author last week. This might end up as part of the Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon!

So this past week one of my favorite author’s sisters posted in her author’s group about how there was a reason she, Tara Sivec, hadn’t been that active the past few months. Tara has been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. First I went and donated to the Go Fund Me HERE to help with her medical expenses. Then I needed to go buy more of her books, including this Christmas one I didn’t have yet.

I can’t believe all of my favorite books that are having 10 year anniversaries this year! I ordered this hardcover with the beautiful slip-cover as well as the cover underneath. When I went to put this on my shelf, I can’t find my original copy of #Nerd. I know I bought it to get signed when I met the author at the very first Book Bonanza I think.

More rewatching of Outlander, and the second half of the last season started this week! Survivor as well. Chiefs first loss of the season on Sunday – let’s see if they can get the winning streak back today! Saturday night I binged the new 5 episodes of the very last Cobra Kai. It was fun actually watching with someone else instead of by myself as usual. Plus my sister and I were laughing at the timeline how they showed the people in Spain having night but also the people in California having night as well. And of course the final episode was just crazy! Kind of like the big school fight in the second season.

So all are e-galleys. Those reviews should be posted this week. But I might postpone reading a little on the first one for my holiday reads, especially since I didn’t request it, the publisher sent me the link. The third one may not be for another week also, but we will see! I will also have my DNF Report and L-L-L- Reviews posted. I’m also trying to get books done for my Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon goals too!

Don’t forget I added in a monthly wrap-up giveaway again because my read ARC pile was getting big again! It will end on Saturday! And as I’m going through and getting rid of books, I’m finding I will probably continue to do 2 winners as I pull out more ARCs from my shelves that I’m not going to keep.

If you’re participating in the Ho-Ho-Ho Readathon hosted by Kimberly at Caffeinated Reader you can enter my fun scavenger hunt challenge HERE.

I’ll be home this week for our week long Thanksgiving break. Hoping after my two week restrictions on lifting are over to get my decorations put up. Also hope to get lots of reading done if my dogs will let me. Planning to spend some time with my author friend to help her get things ready for her next couple shows. And of course, Thanksgiving with my mom’s side at noon on Thursday, and for dinner on Thursday with my dad’s side.

Can you believe November is almost over? If you celebrate Thanksgiving, are you looking forward to that?

  1. I can’t remember the last time we had Netflix. We rarely watched anything on it so it was just money being thrown out the window. Love the sparkly Chiefs shirt.

Looks like you had a great book week.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I used my mom’s account til the cracked down on the sharing. Then I’ll subscribe when a show I want to see comes out. But I make a note in my calendar to cancel the week before it runs out so I don’t end up paying after the show is over.

  2. Yea for vacation week! My kids are coming home Tuesday evening and I only work Tuesday. I love Thanksgiving! I hope you are able to completely heal while at home. I finished the Under the Mistletoe Collection. The Hazelwood story was my favorite and the Bailey one was my least favorite. I hadn’t read her books before, and after this short story, I probably will skip them.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Yay for having the kids home! I need to get to the audio collection, but probably won’t till next month because of the review audio I’m listening to. I’ve tried two Bailey books and couldn’t get into them, so don’t know if I’ll end up liking this or not.

  3. Cruel Winter with You was super cute! I really enjoyed it! I’m jealous you have the whole week off. I only have to go Monday and Tuesday though, so its not too bad. I really hope you find a better job next year. This one seems meh.

Ugh, those two days with students can be horrible so I’m glad our district does the whole week off. Although I found out in my niece’s district the kids have the whole week but the teachers work on Monday and Tuesday.

  4. I love the dino earrings. Too cute. Sounds like you had a good week. I am off all week too. I love Tessa Bailey and reviewed this one Friday. It just didn’t work for me. Too short. Glad you found another blanket. I am thinking I need one more for this year. I just finished my complete Gilmore Girl rewatch a d feel kind of lost now. Finishing g up From tonight and of course there are still four more episodes of Yellowstone. Hope you have a great holiday!

    • Lisa Mandina

I haven’t been able to get into two different Tessa Bailey books, but am going to give this one a try since it was cheap. I cannot help myself from buying blankets, all year long, lol.

  5. You AP is something else! Can you report her to the union? I hope you enjoy your time off! I think I missed your Sunday Post for last week, too as I’m not sure how you were injured. I posted really late that day because of being so busy. I hope your injury heals quickly! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week, Lisa!

It won’t do any good. Or if it does, I’ll be dealing with a hostile work environment. So I’m just going to keep saying no to the things I shouldn’t have to do and don’t want to do. I was moving a box that was way heavier than I expected and pulled something in my side. It seems a lot better now though.

    • Lisa Mandina

Hi Greg! Haven’t talked to you in a while! I hope things are good! Yeah, 5 more episodes, and then the last 5 will be in February.

    • Lisa Mandina

Those two days before Thanksgiving were always so crazy, and we have so many fights and stuff in our building that I’m glad we have them off. I think we had at least 3 if not 4 or 5 fights last week!

  6. Yeah I think we’re basically waiting to watch the final season of at least three shows before we make plans about Netflix. I’m waiting for the final seasons of Stranger Things, You, and Wednesday! Lol. So if we cancel it’ll be sometime in 2026 if the news articles I’ve read are correct. Glad you’re feeling a little better. Sounds like school was mostly good. Sorry your candy thief keeps acting up. Hope things get better for you there. Your AP sounds like a real peach.

Nice new reads! All totally new to me ones but I hope you end up loving them all!

    • Lisa Mandina

I tend to cancel when my shows aren’t on for most channels these days. I resubscribed to Netflix this summer thinking Stranger Things was coming after Bridgerton. And then it didn’t. :-(. So I’ll probably resign up when Stranger Things does come out, or the next Bridgerton season.

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! I’m hoping to go see Wicked tomorrow with my mom as well. Already got the tickets for the Xtreme screen at one of our theaters where the screen wraps around the sides of the seats too. And yes, you only work on Wednesday? That is weird, lol.

    • Lisa Mandina

My brother and I were paying the extra for Netflix, but then it cut our using her account off so I got my own only when showed I wanted were back. I do the same with pretty much all the streaming services these days. Except Starz, because every time I go to cancel while waiting for new Outlander episodes, they offer me a great deal, like $1.99 a month, and then I can continue my rewatching of the newer seasons that aren’t on Netflix, which I don’t have anyway, lol.

  7. Your chili looks good. And I hope your mom gets to sell her house soon. That’s horrible your AP has been gaslighting you, good that you found out, is there anything you can do about it? Glad to hear you have a thanksgiving break, I hope you have a great thanksgiving! We don’t celebrate that holiday here, but black Friday now is a thing is here. Nice haul with those cheap audiobooks, I am always happy when I can pick up some audios for cheap. I am curious about your review for Under Loch and Key, that cover looks great! I hope you have a good week!

    • Lisa Mandina

Probably not much I can do about the AP. Already being miserable at work, I don’t want to make it a hostile environment. I can’t wait to get started on Under Lock and Key, may not get to it till this weekend because the book I just started is over 400 pages and of course all day today will be busy!
