Weekly Wrap-Up #193 – October 13th, 2024

I’m connecting up once again with Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer.

Sunday was a kind of busy day. I got up planning to do a bit of blogging then mow. But I had mentioned going to Costco to get treats for school and I have to go with my mom since I don’t have my own membership. Well, she called to say we should go in the morning because it isn’t as busy as later in the day after church gets out. So we did that. I came home and then I mowed. Had lunch, did some laundry, and a bit of blogging. I’ve also decided to start weeding books because my shelves are so full. I’m pulling both books I’ve read as well as trying to pull out ones I haven’t read if I just don’t know that I’ll get to them at this point. Then my mom already had someone want to buy her old living room furniture, so she had me come sit with the dog while they came to pick it up. I went grocery shopping afterwards, then my mom came and picked me up and we met my brother’s family at Red Robin for dinner. Lots of secrets, my mom is going to let my brother be surprised by the new furniture, so couldn’t talk about that. Plus my brother and sister-in-law are going to take my niece and nephew on a Disney cruise next year, my mom and I might go with. But they are giving it to the kids as a Christmas gift, so we can’t talk about that yet either.

Monday morning was a nice bit of a sleep in day. I had a professional development event at another school district. It was a bit of a further drive than my normal job, but it didn’t start till 8, and I have to be at school by 7, so I got to sleep in. It was an AI PD for the most part, and I got a lot of good info. They had food trucks there for lunch, and I had yummy mac & cheese bowl with brisket on it. Their library was gorgeous, they had a coffee shop run by students in it, an upper level with a “fish bowl” classroom, and a section that was just wooden stairs, but the big kind that people can sit on if you have a presentation. It reminded me I had considered applying for a job here at one time, but talked myself out of it because of the long drive. I did take pictures of things in their library that I would like to do in my own library. The only problem with a later start to the day often means a later end, and then with the extra 15 minutes added to the drive and having to go through the city and hit some rush hour traffic, I got home and was tired. Just stayed in and watched the Chiefs game, another win! Plus the Royals won as well!

Tuesday back to normal work day. It was a busy day. Lots of computer issues. And last hour I had a lot of students sent down from different teachers to “work”. Most of them were good. But then about 20 minutes before the end of the day, I had a couple boys who said their teachers sent them down because they were talking and not working in the classroom. I was like, what? They of course went and sat by some girls who had come down earlier. And they all proceeded to sit and talk the rest of the day. In the evening I went and had an early dinner with my mom at Red Lobster, and then came home for a Zoom meeting for the Member Engagement Committee I’m on for ALA.

Wednesday I got into work to find that half of the candy I’d bought this weekend to give as prizes for my repeat readers had been taken during the night. I had it in a drawer, so it wasn’t just sitting out. That means someone got into the cabinets behind my library desk. So now I will have to lock everything up I guess. I left at halfway through the day because I had a doctor’s appointment. I sat and waited for an hour and 40 minutes past my appointment time before I saw the doctor. I like her, she listens, kind of. I told her last time I wasn’t going to take cholesterol medication, because my cholesterol isn’t bad, and what that medication does is worse. That’s why I got the calcium CT scan a week or so ago. It came back excellent. She tried again to get me to take it. I told her no. We are going to try a different depression medication though. I had to leave straight from there though by the time I was done in order to get to the library PD meeting for the Greater Kansas City Association of School Librarians meeting. I saw the librarian who is still at the middle school where I used to teach. Then I got home and had to rush to write a review, and also to finish a book that I’ll have to post a review of on Thursday. I’m so behind, because then I have a review due on Friday for a book that I haven’t even started and it isn’t a short one!

Thursday was a busy day at school. I got the sub clerk for like 2 hours. I taught a couple classes and my AP didn’t even stop by. So that was lovely. I had a birthday dinner for a friend, she and I, and another friend of hers all have birthdays this month. But that also meant another night of not getting to be home reading like I need to. So I’m still behind on a book review due on Friday. We had some yummy Italian at a restaurant called Lidia’s, and then I had this delicious lemon dessert that they brought the three of us who had birthdays with the little candle in it.

Friday we had the annual Hall of Fame where they invite the alumni of the district of the year to come talk to the students. It’s always in the library where they take the tables and block off my shelves and move all the chairs to look like an auditorium area. Which makes me wonder why it can’t just be in the auditorium? But oh well. There was a quick interview for my library clerk position with a guy who is an IA and also a football coach. Pretty sure that’s who the AP wanted, and he did say he read, so overall it will work out. The rest of the day was pretty quiet because the custodians didn’t have time to move all the tables and chairs back where they went and I wasn’t about to do it. I rushed home after work and immediately started reading the almost 200 pages I had left of the book that’s review was due today. Got it finished in about 3 hours and wrote the review. Then relaxed for a bit for the first night just getting to be home really all week, finally got to watch this week’s Survivor. Oh, I did get some stickers made, some for Filipino American History Month and some for Halloween.

Saturday was a lovely sleeping in morning. I got up and did some blog visiting. A little laundry, and then I went to get my car’s oil changed and tires rotated. I like to sit at the dealer if I can and wait, because it gives me lots of reading time. Afterwards I stopped by the Verizon store because I’m finally able to get a new phone, but they didn’t have any pink ones of the new iPhone in stock. He asked if I was open to other colors, but since I don’t need a new phone, I’ll figure out how to get the pink one. He said to use the app, so I’ll try that or the website. Then I came home, did a bit more blogging. My mom and I went to dinner. Afterwards I came home to try to get finished watching Evil so I can cancel Paramount +. I got all but about two thirds of the last episode finished. I had to go to bed and do more reading.

So, the first 3 were e-galleys I read for review for the author/publisher. Fourth was an actual physical copy I got from the author for a blog tour. All reviews were posted this past week.

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

None

Bookish Stuff:

This month the Picklegram from author J.J. Knight was in a little bit longer envelope and that was to fit the bookmark and fun sticker in!

E-galleys:

I actually got this about a week ago and should have gotten the review done by this week. But I forgot when I got the email and so didn’t download it till Thursday. But now I don’t know when I’ll get it reviewed. So I probably shouldn’t have downloaded it at all.

Free E-books:

I saw the first one as a freebie that Anne on Books of My Heart got, and when I went to check it was still free so I grabbed it. The rest are also all free on Amazon. The last one is by an author that I’d read her YA books, but never knew her pseudonym for her romance, and now that I do, I got one for free to try out!

Physical Books:

No, you haven’t clicked on a previous weekly wrap-up, I actually did buy another copy of this one. I had to get the special bookmarks, unfortunately I’d already ordered the other one from B&N and because that had been part of an order that had already partially shipped other books, I was unable to cancel it. So now I have to figure out what to do with that extra copy. Because this one also had an autographed bookplate to put in it.

I completely forgot the 10th anniversary edition of After came out with some extra stuff in it, so I ordered it and it came pretty quickly.

Survivor and of course the Chiefs game on Monday night. My KC Royals had been doing really well too, but I don’t like to watch baseball on tv. Of course they lost three games of the series and didn’t make it any further. And I restarted the whole Outlander series on Sunday night for another comfort watch after a busy weekend. Tried, but didn’t quite finish Evil.

Once again I’ve got too much scheduled! The first three are scheduled for the author/publisher. The last two are e-galleys I’m hoping to get to, even though I’m late. May not get their reviews posted till my L-L-L post at the end of the month, if I even get them read by that time!

Don’t forget I added in a monthly wrap-up giveaway again because my read ARC pile was getting big again! It just started this past week.

We are almost halfway through October! How is it going so fast again?! Probably because there is just so much going on this month it seems. How has your October been so far?

  1. Sounds like a very busy week! Hopefully that new clerk for you will work out. Sorry to hear your candy for school keeps getting stolen. That’s a bummer. Also don’t really understand why teachers like to treat the library as a substitute for going to the principal’s office for misbehaving. Doesn’t seem like much of a punishment, but I am noticing teens today just don’t care about those kinds of things even if they did get sent there. Planning for the Disney Cruise for your niece and nephew sounds like fun! I’m not much of a “cruise” person but I suppose if I ever did one I’d want it to be Disney! Lol. But I guess I never really liked the idea of being stuck on a ship at sea and whatnot. Plus I’m not a beach person so going somewhere overly warm that’s a beach just never appealed to me. I’d rather just go to Disney World! Lol.

Nice new reads! They’re new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them!

Definitely curious about your reviews for If I Have to Be Haunted! I was curious about that one myself. Haunt Your Heart Out looks cute too, so that one caught my eye with its title and pretty purple cover! Lol. I’ll keep an eye out for your end of the month post for sure! Happy Reading!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

I’m at the age where I keep thinking there are things I’d like to do once in my life, and a cruise was on my list. Although I do get a bit of motion sickness, so I’ll be probably wearing one of those patches for that. I would love to just do the parks too, but I’m excited to do this with my niece and nephew and see how they like it. I’m not a beach person either, not even a swimming pool person, basically not a bathing suit person at this weight I am right now. But I’ll suck it up for the kids! lol. I hope I can get to those books soon! I’m so behind!

  2. You had a busy week! You do a lot with your family and quite a bit of reading. Of course you have your work days also. I think it’s important to talk to your doctor, listen and make decisions. Too often it’s easy to just do what they say and it’s not always the right thing. It’s their standard thing because they don’t know you that well. I mean mine spends 15 minutes with me once a year.
I can’t believe how fast October is going. Early voting starts this week here so I’ll be busy with it.

So much going on. I mean I’m not upset I did any of the things I did, it just totally cuts into my reading time. Which other people who aren’t readers/bloggers don’t always understand. Yeah, I got all the research to print out to take into my doctor next time to show her why I won’t take cholesterol medicine. Scientific backed, medically backed research. Statins are so bad, and yet the mainstream of doctors still just hand them out left and right. Yep, October is going by so fast! Only another week and a half before my actual birthday, but I’ll do all the family get togethers next weekend.

  3. I hope the new clerk works out for you and isn’t a hinderance. And boo about someone taking your candy. That’s too bad.

October has been good so far. My son turned 21 on Thursday and is home for a long weekend. We are doing a family celebration today. My daughter is also home, so she and I have been catching up on our TV that we watch together.

I got my flu shot and covid booster today – I hope I sleep well tonight!

    • Lisa Mandina

They did find it was a custodian taking candy and even money from some desks and that person got walked out of the building! Glad October has been good for you. It has mostly for me. Enjoy time with your son and daughter!

  4. Oh my gosh I have to lock up everything in my office too. I keep small bags of chips/cookies for students after long testing sessions and I have to lock them up or they disappear. I had to get my oil changed and tires rotated last weekend. Hopefully this week is good to you!

We found out it was a custodian taking it, and they fired him, so hopefully that helps. Still going to be locking stuff up!

  5. Waiting almost 2 hours for a doctor’s appointment is wild! I probably would’ve left after 30 minutes. But if she’s a good one and she actually listens (for the most part) then maybe it’s worth it. It’s so hard to find a good doctor like that these days.

I’m glad they’re interviewing people to fill your clerk position. Hopefully things work out. And the stickers are super cute!

I hope you have a good week!

    • Lisa Mandina

I have left before when it got over an hour, but really wanted to talk to her this time, so I stayed. Pretty sure the one person I sat in on an interview is going to be hired. Now to just get him trained I guess and hope it works out!

  6. Only upside to waiting at the doctors office is if you can get some good reading done. You list of upcoming and free books look great. I do love holiday books–I am currently reading Love You a Latke. In my opinion, if you are the librarian and not a teacher you should not be tasked with keeping an eye on student who are serving detention. I hope you have nice week!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yes! I did get some good reading done, so couldn’t complain too much because of that, lol. Ooh, I want to read Love You A Latke, I hope it is good! Have a great week!

    • Lisa Mandina

We’ve got the Disney cruise all booked. Now it’s just keeping it a secret from my niece and nephew till Christmas when their mom and dad tell them about it. But I’m already scoping out where my room is on the ship, etc. Unfortunately I’m reading most of these holiday books now! But don’t worry, I have plenty of others not for review that I’ll be reading for HoHoHoRAT.

  7. The secrets sound like fun ones to keep. I get behind, too. I forgot I was supposed to have a book done and reviewed this last Friday and put up another one instead! I’m reading the one that I was supposed to be done now. Oh well, what can you do? I was in Montana so I was a bit busy and things were crazy right before going. I’ll have to come back and check out your other posts.

Oops! I get it, I can’t believe I forgot to write one in my blog planner when I knew I’d downloaded it. And I got it from Netgalley so that will affect my rating on there. Will be interested to hear about your Montana trip!

    • Lisa Mandina

It feels like the people at my school do things the most difficult way as possible. But I should be used to it after the past 3 years I guess. I can’t wait till I can get to reading that one!

  8. I hope you get your book review done by Friday and without any stress. I try to work a week in advance but if my life were as busy as yours or I had that many reviews that were required, I don’t think I could do that. Have a good week!

    • Lisa Mandina

So far getting things done this week, although I ended up DNFing one review book. I schedule them a week in advance, but I rarely get to them that soon! Maybe next year, lol.

  9. Sounds like a busy week with everything you had going on. Weeding books can be tough, I did that a while ago and want to go through them all and donate a few more to others and free little libraries. I don’t want to keep as many physical books as I mostly read ebooks nowadays. That professional development event sounds interesting and that’s nice you got to see another library. That birthday dinner sounds lovely, that lemon dessert looks good. I hope you’ll enjoy your new books, that’s awesome you got a Lidiya Foxglove book for free. I haven’t read that one as it sounded too dark for my taste, but I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I am looking forward to your review for If I Stop Haunting You, it looks interesting. Have a good week!

    • Lisa Mandina

I often end up buying the print copies of e-galleys I’ve read and loved because they are so pretty! Lol. But I want to think about moving in a few years maybe, and to a smaller place. But as long as I have my dogs that won’t happen because I need the yard for them. I have tons of other things I need to get rid of as well. I grabbed that Lidiya Foxglove book because it was a freebie, will see what I think when I get a chance to actually get to it!
