Weekly Wrap-Up #188 – September 8th, 2024

Posted September 8, 2024 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 23 Comments

I’m connecting up once again with Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer.

Sunday I slept in, but then got up and mowed the yard. It was actually past the point I should have mowed, because the grass was a little wet and with it being so tall it kept making my mower stop running. But eventually I got it all mowed. I came back inside and cleaned up before going to the grocery store, then spending most of the day blogging. My mom texted and wanted to do dinner, so we went to the new Mexican place she has fallen in love with over in Liberty. I like them too, especially the fact that they automatically bring out the cheese dip with the salsa and chips, and you don’t have to order it separately. Then I came home and watched the Harry Potter marathon while finishing up my book.

Monday morning was kind of cool, fall weather for sure, and I love it! I also loved sleeping in on the Labor Day holiday. I spent the morning doing laundry, and using my countertop ice machine to make up a full thing of ice for the week. I also got some blogging done finally. Went to my brother’s house for dinner.

Tuesday it was warm again, back up to 81 for the day I think. They had a sub for the desk they’d been making my clerk sit at, so she got to be in the library for most of the day. They are having her help with the hall sweeps, so she leaves at the beginning of each hour to help with that. With Tuesday and Wednesdays being block schedule day, they don’t hold the kids who are late, just send them back to class with the tardy during hall sweeps. So we don’t officially start using the library for that till Thursday. Came home from school and did some blogging. Then at 7 pm I had the first Zoom meeting for a new AASL (American Association of School Librarians) committee that I’m on now, the Member Engagement Committee.

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting to show the Olympic bulletin board behind our circulation desk.

Wednesday was not bad either. My clerk was with me all day. I did tell her again that I’m pretty sure I won’t be coming back next year if she wants to take the other job they have her doing right now too. But since she sat in on those interviews, they don’t know if they can give it to her because of confidentiality. But I did tell her before they started she should take it because I didn’t know that I’d be back next year at that point. Also met with my AP and she talked about how she does have my back, but she also has to report to the Principal since he is her boss, and I told her I totally understood. It was another warm day. Went and had dinner with my mom too.

Thursday they really started the hall sweeps in the library. But I actually got one teacher to go ahead and come do orientation, so that way I could show the principal that I am actually using the library. My clerk was gone, but it wasn’t a bad day really. It was really hot outside though! I went and saw my therapist, and she gave me a couple more ideas of things to do to help. Had a Zoom meeting for the membership committee I’m on for the Missouri Association of School Librarians. Then watched the first Chiefs game of the season.

Friday was sooooooo hard to get up. I was busy all day at work. Not only did I have quick orientations with classes all but one hour of the day, I had told my AP that I could type up a list for her, and it was a TON of names, and I had to try to do it in between teaching classes. The kids in the library for the hall sweep were in fine form today, crazy behavior, and exactly what I’m not looking forward to for the rest of the year. The weather though was very nice, temps had dropped and it finally feels like fall, I can wear jeans again! For dinner I met up with my author friend and we discussed or you could say lamented our life choices.

Saturday morning I got up a little earlier than I like to, but it was to go watch my 6 year old nephew play baseball. It was a crisp morning, very fall weather, but we were sitting directly in the sun, so I regretted wearing jeans. It wasn’t a normal baseball game, it was 5 and 6 year old boys and one girl. But oh my gosh it was so funny. First while they were practicing, I think the first half hour of the game time is just practice, one boy was behind us with his dad and he did not want to play, was crying and didn’t ever go over. Then once they started playing, there was one boy dancing around on the base. One boy who when he was practicing throwing would swing his arm around and around, but then when he threw it was the opposite way, lol. When the ball got hit out to “outfield” or anywhere actually, all the players ran to get it, and even tackled and piled onto each other to get it. I heard the coach say something about how it might be when football was starting, but there was no tackling in baseball. My mom and I went and got lunch from a food truck we’d been wanting to try, but it only comes every few weeks, called On the Hook. We got some yummy fish and chips there. Then I spent the rest of the day at home relaxing, blogging, watching tv.

The first two and last two were e-galleys, from publishers or authors or for blog tours. The first one almost lived up to its title as I took a bit to get through it with my lousy week at the end of August, I’m waiting to post a week or so till after pub date. The third one is the audiobook I was listening to for the next year Gateway nominees, and it was so good! Look for my review of it in my L-L-L Review post at the end of the month. The second, third, and fourth were ones I really enjoyed! Two reviews were up this past week, and the last one will be up on Tuesday!

I think I’m done with Bookly. Sometimes it is difficult to find a book on there, and so I just don’t think I need it, especially now that StoryGraph is making more graphics.

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

I used my September Audible credit to buy the first one. The second one I got from the library app Libby. It is another possibly Gateway for next school year.

Bookish Stuff:

I forgot to share the cool bookmark I got at the craft fair with my mom a week ago. It’s one of those that fit on the corner of the page as you can see from the second picture.

E-galleys:

First one is for a blog tour review for Rachel’s Random Resources. Second is for the Coffee Loft series releases, and I forgot I requested it, so am fitting it into my schedule. But it’s a short enough book and these are quick enough reads I should be okay. Third is one I got turned down for on Edelweiss. So I reached out to my Berkley contact who had been sending me e-galleys to read. I think most of them were actually on Netgalley, so after I emailed asking if I could get it, I went to Netgalley and requested it as well. I got approved! Yay! The next 6 are the upcoming fall releases for SmartyPants Romance. The Julia Kent and Kerry Evelyn books I got from the authors’ review teams and read one of them this past week for a review this Tuesday, the other is for a review on the 19th. The last book I had seen on Edelweiss and thought it looked fun, and then the publisher sent me an link to the e-galley, and I thought, why not since it’s not out till next year!

Free E-books:

There was another stuff your Kindle day this week and I might have gotten a bunch.

Physical books:

None

The stress at work means I’m watching lots of Outlander since it is my comfort show, even as emotional as it is! And trying to work through Evil as well. Saturday night I saw that the movie If was on Paramount+ which I’d just resubscribed to watch Evil, so I watched that. It was cute, but I don’t think I had an invisible friend when I was a kid. Did you?

First was an audiobook I listened to last month for a blog tour review on Monday. Second I just finished last night, and will post the review for the author’s review team on Tuesday. Third is one that I bought last Christmas time when the new romance bookstore opened in KC, and I saw maybe it is getting picked up by a big publisher and available on Edelweiss, so I thought I’d go ahead and maybe read it as a Beat the Backlist book and to review for the new pub date? The last one I finished but held off on posting the review since it was only a 3.5 star read for me.

I’ve got a blitz for this week, and maybe I’ll try to fit in a Discussion post.

How is your September going so far?

Don’t forget I added in a monthly wrap-up giveaway again because my read ARC pile was getting big again! It just started this past week and goes till the end of the month.

  1. Glad to hear you had a better week! I still can’t believe they use your library as a sort of “detention” hall. It doesn’t really seem like a punishment for skipping class. It reminds me of what happened in my 6th grade year that if you got a “pink” slip at anytime during the week you were sent to a “detention” class on Friday afternoon for our last period in the quad while everyone else played games in the other classrooms. And honestly, the one time I got a pink slip, I loved it! I worked on my homework so that I didn’t have any to do when I got home from school that day for the weekend. I think I might have even read my book for the last portion of the “hour.” I kind of wanted to get pink slips more often after that! Lol. I recall if we were good and got to play games; i.e. chess/checkers or puzzles with missing pieces or just sit and socialize, we weren’t allowed to do homework…I might have not been allowed to read either. So I wasn’t a fan of these “fun” time hours. Lol. Hope your week this week is better as well, glad to hear your assistant was able to assist you this past week for some of it!

Nice new reads too! Lots of new to me ones. I still have That’s Not My Name on my TBR as well. I picked it up on a whim during one of B&N’s sales when it was a pick of the month or maybe triple stamps time? Something like that! It sounded interesting enough! Lol. I am seeing a lot of The Unfinished lately and am getting curious! I’ll be looking forward to your review, because I clearly do not have enough on my TBR pile as it is! Lol. Happy Reading!

    Have a GREAT day!

I’m listening to That’s Not My Name right now and it is really good! I will be posting my review of The Unfinished later this week. It was okay, not as great as I’d hoped actually.

  2. That book mark is gorgeous but I hardly ever read physical books these days. When did you decide not to go back to this school next year? Is this year the last one of your contract? I missed this whole idea. I mean I know you aren’t happy with that they take your clerk all the time and having the tardy students. I would be mad about being left with the problem makers in the library. How can anyone else use the library as designed? Here’s to better weather at least. There’s no tackling in baseball *snickers* Reminds me of the commercial – there’s no crying in baseball.

I don’t read as many physical books as I used to, but it was really pretty. Plus at the craft fair they hadn’t really had anyone come to their booth, so I wanted to buy something, lol. Well, I’ll be at this school until the end of this school year, in May. I am under contract till then. But I just can’t keep being so miserable. I can’t think of a year there that hasn’t started out this horribly. And with the last couple years ending so badly too, it’s like the fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, only I’ve gone several more than twice. It’s been frustrating to put so much effort into making the library a place to grab students’ attention, and even having district people come in and have to email my principal compliments of how great my library looks, only to have no one care and have the areas taken up with detention. The baseball game was fun to watch if anything!

  3. Sorry to hear the start of the year was crummy. You have acquired a delightful bunch of books. I have read Fake Dating a Witch and I thought it was a nice start to a series, not too many characters to keep track of and the imaginary town is one I wish I could actually visit. I started my first year working as a pre-K paraprofessional this year so I am exhausted after managing three- and four-year-olds daily. I enjoy it so much!

    • Lisa Mandina

Glad to hear that is a good one! I’ll try to make sure I get to it sooner rather than later. I can imagine being exhausted working with that age, lol. Especially after watching my 6 year old nephew’s baseball game this weekend.

  4. My husband watched If this week as well! It was cute, but kind of sad. I did not want any additional sadness this week! So, instead of sending the kids in the hall to class so they can learn, they make them sit in the library? Aren’t they missing class? Why would anyone want them to miss MORE class? We got a new hall pass system this year (smart pass) and they hired a hall monitor. They can see on the screen who has permission to be out of class, where they are going to, and how long they have been gone. If they aren’t on the list, they are escorted back to class, and given detention. It has made the hallways so much nicer during class! We also outlawed cell phones during class this year and that has been amazing as well.

I agree that it had some sadness to it that at first was not at all what I expected with it! We have that hall pass system too, but getting the teachers to use it is a whole other issue. And yeah, that’s my thought too, how is it helping them to be out of class, and it’s not punishment at all for the ones who were trying to skip class in the first place. Oh well. They are trying to say no cell phones, but as usual, kids have them out all the time.

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! They seem to think it is working, and are continuing it, so that’s the story of my job til May I guess.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, my mental health is just something I can’t keep doing this to. I love the bookmark, even if I probably won’t use it, it will just sit and look pretty on my bookshelves, lol.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, it was just pretty and I wanted to support the people in that booth, so it will actually just be looking pretty on my bookshelves, lol.

    • Lisa Mandina

So far the week is starting out pretty nice with taking the day off to help my dad and stepmom after he had knee replacement surgery today, lol.

  5. Yea for having your clerk back part of the week! I must have missed it – did they hire someone for the job she was filling in? I’m so glad football season is back – it’s the best part of fall. And the Pats even won a game!

My husband and I head off on our European adventure tomorrow, so I won’t be around for a few weeks. I hope you stay well and school improves. See you in October!

    • Lisa Mandina

Actually I told my clerk she could go ahead and take that job if she preferred, not to be loyal to me, do what was best for her, because I am going to do my best to not be there after this school year. So she is actually going to interview later this week for it. Have a blast in Europe! So jealous!

  6. I am slowly updating my Storygraph history which I imported from Goodreads. I didn’t realize how many years I had recorded on Goodreads though so it’ll take awhile. I hope you are able to find a better job and your clerk gets the other position. You’ve had to deal with way more than you should have had to. Your e-galleys all look so good! I am going to have to check them out. I hope you are having a good week, Lisa!

    • Lisa Mandina

One thing I have issues with on Storygraph is that some of the sorting isn’t as easy as it is on Goodreads, so I’ve got a lot of stuff that got imported from Goodreads that could use some work! So far this week has been okay.
