Weekly Wrap-Up #184 – August 25th, 2024

I’m connecting up once again with Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer.

Sunday was a busy, but fun day, helping my author friend with her table at a local author book fest. Here she is sitting at the table before the day got started! It was a warm day, but not terribly hot as it has been. When I got home, the guy who is going to take out the other tree and haul away the shed for me started some of the work.

Monday was another hot day. So hard to get up again too. But the morning with the 9th graders at school went smoothly I think. The admin got us bagels for breakfast, and then they grilled burgers and hot dogs for us for lunch. In the afternoon we had department meetings at the other high school. While I was sitting there in the library meeting, which really was just us working on things once we got the few things we needed done, I started feeling a bit dizzy, so it seems my vertigo is back. The guy doing work on my backyard had done some more today, cutting down the rest of the other tree, as well as some of the other overgrowth I had back there. I just stayed home to finish my current read to post a review tomorrow, as well as to relax with my poor dogs who hadn’t had much time with me lately it seems.

Tuesday was a work day. And it was nice to be able to get some things done and start feeling like my library looked ready for kids to be there. Of course I got a text as I was on my way home from my new library clerk that until they hire the assistant principals’ secretary, she’s going to be going up every day from 1-2:30 pm, the end of the day, to work up there. So yeah, that’s lovely. Once I got home I got a review written, then went to have dinner with my mom at a Mexican restaurant she’d been to once before with my stepdad before he passed, but I hadn’t been to yet. I liked the food, although my burrito had 3 types of sauce on it, each type on one third of the burrito, and I didn’t like the green sauce on the last third.

Wednesday, what can I say other than this was a crazy day. It wasn’t horrible overall, but it wasn’t the best first day of school I’d ever had. To start the day off, the Destiny/Follett program we use to check books and laptops out with wasn’t working. And we were supposed to get the new 9th graders laptops checked out. Well, by shortly into 2nd hour, it was up. But that meant we’d have to get the 1st hour students on Thursday. Then in the afternoon, someone stopped by our puzzle table that I can’t see from my desk and asked what happened. I go and look, and someone has spilled water on it. Ruining a brand new puzzle, and hopefully not ruining the puzzle board. I hate that whoever did it didn’t bother to just tell us so we could have tried to clean it up right away before the water soaked into the board. When I got home I was exhausted, but pleased to see the shed was now gone from my back yard! Also making my day better was getting my new Bru-Mate cup delivered.

Thursday was crazy busy in the morning, still tons of students without schedules or with schedule issues. Then in the afternoon, from 12:30-end of day, my clerk had to go work in the office. Which she texted that there really wasn’t any reason she needed to be up there. Oh well. I did get some new stickers made for students in the library in the afternoon. I had my first therapist appointment in the afternoon. It went okay. I don’t know if I feel like it went well or not. It wasn’t bad, just don’t know if it was as helpful as I’d hoped. She did suggest that I needed to look at the things I knew were under my control and when I started stressing, think to myself if I was stressing about things that were not under my control.

Friday I thought was going to be a calmer day, the morning was not. Lots of computer issues. I did decide I was going to create a gratitude type of journal though. So I decided to look for a cute new notebook for that. I found out I am NOT on the building site council like I’d thought. That irritated me for a bit, then I remembered it was something I couldn’t control, and decided I would also use my gratitude journal idea to make a list of things I wasn’t in control of and realizing that so I could help my stress. My clerk was up in the other office again in the afternoon. Got home for a bit before going to help my mom take her stuff to set up for the craft fair she was doing on Saturday, then she and I went to dinner. Came home and played games on my phone with Outlander on the tv in the background.

Saturday morning there was a nice thunderstorm that started about an hour before I had to get up to go help my mom at the craft fair. Which I then stayed in bed a little later than planned. I ran to get donuts before I got there. And then my mom’s booth was right by my stepmom’s booth, so I spent the day hanging out with all of them. Came home and relaxed and tried to get moving on the book I was reading!

The first two were e-galleys. First for the author’s review team, and second for a blog tour review. The 3rd was an audiobook that I listened to in preparation for the Gateway possible nominees for next school year.

Here are my Bookly stats for the week:

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

Got this from Libby/public library. It is also a possible nominee for the Gateway Award for next school year.

Bookish Stuff:

The August Picklegram from author J.J. Knight was a little late because she’d been trying to wait and send it out with the book box for Salty Pickle if we ordered that. But she went ahead and sent it. There is the adorable goat sticker, and a little goat charm to go on the charm bracelet the Patreon members have!

E-galleys:

This is part of the next collection in the Coffee Loft series. I should be reading to post a review on September 4th.

Free ebooks:

First was a freebie from the author’s newsletter to go with a favorite series! The rest were freebies on Amazon.

Physical books:

One of my favorite authors mentioned she was doing a book show in Milwaukee and that they were selling this book for charity, so I had to buy the first one with a gift card I got from purchasing my contact lenses, but then the price was more than the gift card, so Amazon charged it to my credit card instead. Second is a book from a publisher that I actually told the publisher when they emailed on August 14th that I wasn’t interested in the middle grade book, but they sent it anyway. I’ll be sharing it with my middle school librarians, my niece isn’t into the historical fiction as much these days. Third was my paperback copy of Bananapants that I bought with the gift card since Amazon didn’t use it for the first book. Fourth was one I purchased this summer when B&N had their pre-order sale and now that it’s out it came this week! Fifth was a finished copy from the publisher. I decided if they’ll send me the finished copies instead of ARCs, I’ll read the e-galley, then put the finished copy in my school library. I’ll be reading this one soon too! Last was the book box I ordered from the author. I’d already read the first 20 chapters in her newsletter, and then she stopped and we had to wait for the book to come out. Can’t wait to jump back into this one!

Not enough time to really watch much since I’m so behind on reading, so that means mostly having Outlander episodes on in the background while I’m reading.

The first one is an ARC that I’d hoped to get to this past week but didn’t get finished. The second and third are both e-galleys, one from the publisher and one from the author.

I will also be posting my DNF Report and my L-L-L-Little Reviews this week since we are at the end of August already!

Don’t forget I added in a monthly wrap-up giveaway again this month because my read ARC pile was getting big again! And that will end on Saturday.

Also we’re now celebrating my 15th blogoversary for the rest of the month with a giveaway HERE. I think it also is over on Saturday.

Can you believe it is almost September? We had our first official days of school with the students this past week. And I had days I was positive about this year, and then days that kind of blew that positivity out the door.

  1. Sounds like a busy week! Seems silly that your assistant has to help out another department at a time they don’t need help. But whatever I guess. Hopefully they can hire their own person soon so you can get yours back! But ugh, water all over the puzzle? All they would have had to say was it was an accident. It’s not like they would’ve been read the riot act! Sounds a little odd that the Mexican join put three kinds of sauces on the burrito, I would’ve thought one was standard. But at least 2/3 were good!

Nice set of reads too! All totally new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

I’m going to just work on figuring out what I can do on my own and just not stress about things as much as possible, we’ll see how that goes! lol

  2. You are in the settle in and adjust to the new routine time which will take a bit. Take care of yourself. It’s cool that both your mom and stepmom are into crafts. Are you a crafter? I want to do more but won’t get to more until the yard work is ending and the fall garden is planted.

Yeah, I’m just figuring how this year is going to go, and unfortunately having to lower my hopes that things would be a lot better and just settle for what good there is. I’m not much of a crafter. I used to cross-stitch, but once I got dogs that jumped on my lap all the time I had to quit that. I never wanted to learn to sew when I was growing up, even though my mom wanted to teach me, and now I once in a while have her show me a few things. My mom has a fancy embroidery machine she uses to make personalized things or just baby stuff. She sews a bit too, not as much any more as the embroidery stuff though. My stepmom crochets and knits. Winter will be time for crafts probably!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I’m going to work on going straight to self care as much as possible to try to divert stress from building up.

Glad you got your yard back in order and the damage gone. The water spill on the puzzle situation is so frustrating. I took your advice and just purchased the kindle version of Bridesmaid for Hire to read first (I had Kindle points expiring and this one was only 0.99. We took my daughter back to college yesterday and so today I feel tired after all the driving and packing and unpacking and set up.

    • Lisa Mandina

Exciting day to take her back to college I’m sure! But yeah, a long day with driving and packing, etc. Hope you enjoy Bridesmaid for Hire, I’m such a huge fan of Meghan Quinn.

  4. I had several friends who have done gratitude journals to help with movitavation to look on the bright side and less on the stressful side. I love the qoute from anne of green gables Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it. Sometimes i will write down all the things i upset about or stress over and try to write a postive to turn it around. I have some really bad days sometimes with working from home 24/7 and hardly ever seeing anyone and when i see all the vacations etc my friends go on i get super jealous and irritated so sometimes just not looking at social media is what best. I hope you have a good school year.

Yeah, I’ve already started making myself think a little differently over the weekend. Just need to remember this when I’m in the moment with things happening at work.

  5. I have that same water cup!! Well, I think. Mine is an Iron Flask and it is that exact same color with the same purple straw! Hopefully they hire a secretary soon so your clerk doesn’t have to do that. I hate when they make people do someone else’s job like that. Enjoy your week!

Is your cup a Bru-Mate? That’s the brand I buy and love! I know they’re not going to even start interviewing till September, so at least another two weeks is my guess. Oh well. That’s the story of my life/job!

    • Lisa Mandina

Ah, sorry to hear about that! I like my clerk, I just wish she was more of a reader. This is the second one in a row I’ve had that doesn’t read. However, she did read some things this summer which maybe I’m going to get her reading more! lol The cup has some cool colors in different lights.

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! I’m hoping it will as well. I have to say already today with some frustrations I was able to talk myself down too.

    • Lisa Mandina

So far I think some of my not letting certain things stress me is helping, but otherwise it’s not starting out the best!

  6. Because of course you get a competent helper / clerk so they are pulled elsewhere! Hopefully they fill the other spot soon. Glad to hear the work in your yard is continuing.

I was busy all last week helping my daughter get ready to move to college, which we did on Friday. Then my son left Saturday. It’s weird without them here.

    • Lisa Mandina

So close to being done with the yard! And yeah, it’s like I’ll never have a full time clerk at this rate. I’m just at the point where I’m accepting it and giving up I think. I’m sure it’s quiet without the kids at home now!

  7. That’s nice you helped your author friend with the event. Sorry to hear about the hot weather and your dizziness, that’s so uncomfortable. That’s too bad your library clerk now has to fill in for another job as well. Summer vacation for schools seems to have gone by very quickly, I saw the schools are back here as well since this week. Such a shame about that water on the puzzle and board, I hope you were able to save the board. I hope the therapist appointments will be helpful, that thing of focusing on what you can control I’ve heard more often. Sounds like you had a nice Saturday at least. Happy 15th blogoversary! I didn’t realize you had been blogging for so long already!

    • Lisa Mandina

Blogging is my happy place, when I get time to do it! The puzzle board is okay. Had to throw that puzzle away unfortunately, and it was a really pretty and colorful one sadly.
