Weekly Wrap-Up #183 – August 18th, 2024

Posted August 18, 2024 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 20 Comments

I’m connecting up once again with Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer. I’ll be helping an author friend at a book event today, so I will be a bit behind on getting around to check everyone else’s posts out!

Last Sunday was a cloudy and cool, quiet day at home. I did some blogging, and worked on my last week of my graduate class to get a raise at school. Finished reading a book. Then started watching the show 3 Body Problem on Netflix.

Monday was the last day before all the teachers are back. It was a rainy morning and cloudy day, but humid. It was the first day for my new library clerk though. It was great having her back. She spent most of the day kind of going through the desk and getting it set up the way she wanted, then helped blow up balloons and decorate for tomorrow for our assistant principal. I remembered all my stuff for lunch at school, except the stuff in my fridge, so I ended up going out for lunch. Because I just brought it back to my desk to eat, I didn’t really read since people were talking to me during my lunch. Just kept working while eating mostly.

Tuesday was another cloudy and cooler day. It was the first day for all teachers to be back, and it was basically an all day meeting. Sooooooooo long and kinda boring. They want all the different departments to create a carpool karaoke one minute long. I do NOT want to do that, I don’t like to sing or be on video. So trying to not do it since I’m not really part of a department. But also came up with an idea to maybe just have my clerk and I sit in the library reading car books with a song about being quiet playing in the background. Lunch was provided from a local Italian restaurant, which is so-so. Then in the evening I went to a RiffTrax event with my friend.

Wednesday cloudy and cooler again for the most part. Meetings started out with the whole district, so I was back at the South high school library to meet with the high school and middle school librarians. Really we only had a few actual things to talk about for an agenda, then we used the time to discuss other things, some gossip about the district of course, and work on things on our computers. It was back to the building for afternoon meeting about Intruder/Safety drill prep. Finally got the money from my insurance, although I don’t feel like they gave me all that really I need. And I don’t think there was any money for the fence yet, so we shall see on that. But now to pay off the company that already did work, have the other guy come out and finish up, and then to go find a shed within the money I have left, which actually will be the money for my deductible, not from them. Went to my mom’s for dinner and to hang out for the evening. My reading suffers when I don’t have time to sit and eat alone. Even at school the last few days people kept interrupting me when I ate lunch at my desk. Ugh. In the evening I went and had dinner with my mom, then we watched a scary movie, Abigail.

Thursday was another long day of meetings at school. While it rained a bit overnight and into the morning, the day ended up being a muggy and hot afternoon, up to 100 degrees I think! Unfortunately for me, I had to mow when I got home. I actually got to talk to someone on the phone with the insurance too, and they hadn’t realized I had another estimate for the other tree to be taken down, and so they ended up giving me more money to cover that. Supposedly it will only cost about $630 to fix the 30 feet of chain link fence that was messed up. And I’ll have to call the business behind me to see if they’ll fix the wooden fence. I was so tired after mowing, I just did a little blogging and then rested on the couch with the dogs the rest of the night. So behind again on reading, the review I’d planned to post on Thursday I hadn’t finished the book till before bed. Saw a cool cloud in the sky to the east of my house in the evening.

Friday was a long and hot day. Our school district did the Convocation outside in my high school’s stadium. Sure it was at 8 am in the morning. But it was already hot, and the sun was right above us. We were out for about an hour and a half to two hours by the time it was done.

Then we had about an hour and a half in the building in the a/c before it was time for our afternoon “tour” of Raytown, the town where our school district is. While the tour was interesting, we got to go see all the feeder schools and the neighborhoods our students lived in, the Raytown Historical society museum, and other locally important places, we had to ride on school buses with no a/c. And when we got off to walk around at outdoor places, it was hot! I feel so sorry for our teachers who only got about 2 or 3 hours mixed in with meetings for the 4 days they were back this week. And then Monday we have a half day with 9th graders first thing in the morning. Sure the teachers have all of Tuesday for a work day, but that’s after they’ve already had to be ready! I had to go home and take a shower, and then I went to my brother’s for dinner. Didn’t stay long because I was so tired. And again, so behind on reading! Maybe have to skip one e-galley in order to make sure I get one read for an author team I’m on, since that is first priority to me over an e-galley a publisher sent me that I didn’t request.

Saturday was another warm one. I woke up just a bit stressed from having the final project/paper due in my grad class this weekend, and not having much done. The week was just too busy! Woke up later than I had originally planned from just being too exhausted from the heat yesterday and being out in it all day it seemed. Went over to my mom’s around 11 as someone was coming to buy one of my stepdad’s big tools out of the basement and she didn’t want to be alone when someone came over. Then she and I went to the storage unit to go through and see what was left in there as we’d been slowly cleaning it out. So we can decide what to do with the rest and quit paying for it. Then I took Dora to get her toenails cut. Argyle needs it less often because he runs back and forth so much on the little brick pathway by the fence when he is playing with the neighbors’ dogs. For the evening I went to my author friend’s house to have dinner and hang out while she got her books autographed for the Sunday book fair event. I also created some little post cards for her to hand out showing her next series.

The first two were e-galleys and the reviews were posted throughout the week. Third was the autographed copy I got when I met the author last month. Fourth was an audiobook I got on Audible as one of their free originals. I wasn’t able to sign up for the e-galley/review for that one, so getting the audio this way was perfect! The last two here will be in my L-L-L-Little Reviews post at the end of the month.

Here are my Bookly stats for the week:

ARCs:

none

Audiobooks:

Downloaded this from the library on Libby to listen to. It is a possible Gateway Award nominee for next school year. Going to be trying to listen to/read those over the next 5 months.

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galley:

Got this one from Netgalley from an email the publisher sent me. It also had a link to the sequel to Jo Segura’s book that I didn’t finish, so I didn’t bother getting that one.

Free E-books:

Actually I got these at the end of last week, all free on Amazon.

Physical books:

I found this FairyLoot edition of A Fragile Enchantment at the local used bookstore during our tour of Raytown on Friday. I’ve wanted to read it, but I might actually trade it for another book if there is someone specifically looking for this one.

As always, continuing to rewatch Outlander. Started watching 3 Body Problem on Netflix as well.

The Tuesday night RiffTrax movie was Point Break, which I’ve actually never seen. Of course there are some scenes, like Keanu shooting the gun into the air instead of shooting Patrick’s character. But these things are always fun to watch, and this was probably the correct way to watch this movie at this point.

On Wednesday night my mom and I saw the scary movie we’d wanted to see in the theaters was now on Peacock, so after dinner we watched it at her house. It wasn’t too bad!

The first two are e-galleys, the first for the author’s review team, the second for a blog tour. The third is an ARC from the publisher. I’m also hoping to maybe get another Beat the Backlist book finished. We shall see!

Don’t forget I added in a monthly wrap-up giveaway again this month because my read ARC pile was getting big again!

Also we’re now celebrating my 15th blogoversary for the rest of the month with a giveaway HERE.

Last week was teachers back, this week we start with just 9th graders for a half day on Monday, and then all students back on Wednesday. And I am feeling discombobulated and not at all ready! What do you have coming this week?

  1. Sounds like a very busy and exhausting week! The heat didn’t help either, I’m sure. It was pretty miserable up here too temperature wise. Friday was so blasted hot, I walked around a festival for awhile. My mom was stuck babysitting my older niece who can’t really be trusted on her own, hence the babysitting, so she wasn’t able to go this year as she and my stepdad went camping the next day. Told them they didn’t miss much as I didn’t see anything worth buying this time around sadly. But it’s always fun for me to go! I went early and most booths were open early so I got to avoid the large crowd this festival tends to draw so that was a plus! Lol. I can already feel some of my reading time dragging as well, this week I was exhausted, not sure if I had some minor flu bug or what but I was just mentally drained everyday, starting to wonder if it was because said niece was over. Lol.

Hoping the house search gets better soon since rates are lowering a bit. I find myself lowering some of my “must haves” just to get out and have my own space. Plus I miss all my books! Lol. I still need to get up to my storage unit to find books for October events.

Nice new reads! Nice luck finding the Fairy Loot book. I have that one on my “maybe” pile. I only ever skip the ones I know I will not like reading and since they are so limited, I find I sometimes need to get the ones I’m meh over. I probably ought to cancel it one of these days, but I have to admit, I do like their exclusive editions and even though it’s a helluva battle trying to buy one as a subscriber, I can usually get one. Usually. These are all new to me books other than that one but I hope you enjoy them all!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

When I saw that Fairy Loot book I had to grab it! They were selling it at a great deal, so figured I’d have the pretty book or maybe trade it for another one if I wanted a different book. I just can’t justify subscribing to the boxes no matter how much I want them! It sounds like interest rates are going to start going down from what I hear. And I feel like maybe the housing market is slowing down a bit? I hope so, I totally can understand why you want your own house and to be able to get your books out! Hope you have a good week!

This past week was too busy and not enough time to read! I’m behind on review books now! Hoping to have more time to read so I can get to The Lies of Alma Blackwood this week on time.

  2. I hate all the meetings at the beginning of the year. They never really apply to me, and when we break up into teams, I don’t have a team. Thankfully, it wasn’t too bad this year. It was hot here this week, then it finally rained and it was hot and humid. I was not impressed.

They’re such a waste! I feel like they need to have a day of meetings, then the next day a work day, or half each day should be work time for teachers. I’m hoping we get a little cooler weather this week.

    • Lisa Mandina

And the meetings are so much information and no time to go figure out how the teachers will put it into use. I’m glad the insurance stuff is finally done, as far as I know. And now I can start seeing it all get fixed!

  3. Sounds like a busy time for you but 4 books done is better then no books. I finally finished court the fourth crave book last night boy that was a long book seemed like to took forever to get through but i always feel like that when the book is more then 500 pages that one is 730 with the bonus content. I am still working on reading the books for the lastest jennifer armentrout series. I am on the fourth book in the suggested reading order. Weather is still warm here we did have a storm roll through last night but i think it was mostly wind and thunder booms no rain. Hope you have a good week.

Well, technically the third book I finished I had been reading little bits of since last month, and the audiobook I’d been listening to in the car over the past two weeks. WE need some rain again here I think, but don’t know when we’ll get much. That’s okay, I just want it cooler.

  4. Sounds like a long week with all the back to school meetings. I hope they let you do your idea for the karaoke carpool so you don’t have to sing on camera. I hope you have a good week and a good first day with students later this week.

A long week with not enough reading time! I ended up doing nothing for the karaoke thing and we’ll see what they say! Thanks for the positive thoughts for the week, hoping to start off good with the students!

    • Lisa Mandina

I’m listening to it, so it will take a bit to get through it. So far it’s not bad. I’m intrigued to see what the twist is now!

  5. I really enjoyed Abigail when we watched it. I just got Love of My Afterlife from the library this week. Trying to squeeze it in as I have really been wanting to read it. We’ve been watching preseason football but I’m really psyched for college to start. Today was Zekey’s birthday so we’ve been kind of busy. Hope you have a great week!

I liked Abigail, although we didn’t go to the theater to see it, because I’d heard bad reviews. But I ended up liking it better than the movie we did go back when it came out. I really enjoyed Love of My Afterlife. If you have time it will be a hard one to put down! I said happy birthday to Zekey over on FB, such a cutie!

  6. Sounds like you’re getting some resolution with the backyard damage. Insurance can be so frustrating. The cloud picture is so cool. 3 Body Problem looks neat, but I rarely watch TV. Hope you get some rest and time for reading, Lisa! 🙂

Finally getting something done with the backyard, and then school goes and starts to go downhill again. Oh well.

  7. So glad you have your clerk helping you on a permanent basis! And yea for getting more insurance money. That’s also great that you are so close to finishing your grad school work.

How is Three Body Problem? I have it on my watch list and will probably get to it over the fall/winter. With my daughter leaving Friday for college, I will have a lot of free time to watch the TV shows she didn’t want to.

    • Lisa Mandina

Permanent, but only half a day until they hire the assistant principal’s secretary starting tomorrow! Ugh. Got the grad school class finished, today I got the transcript sent for the pay raise. I’ve been enjoying Three Body Problem so far, just haven’t had time to watch in a while. Definitely recommend it!
