Blurb:
Angel Crawford has finally pulled herself together (literally!) after her disastrous dismemberment on Mardi Gras. She’s putting the pieces of her life back in order and is ready to tackle whatever the future holds.
Too bad the future is a nasty bitch. There’s a new kind of zombie in town: mindless shamblers, infectious and ravenous.
With the threat of a full-blown shambler pandemic looming, and a loved one stricken, Angel and the “real” zombies scramble to find a cure. Yet when Angel uncovers the true reason the plague is spreading so quickly, she adds “no-holds-barred revenge” to her to-do list.
Angel is busting her ass dealing with shambling hordes, zombie gators, government jerks, and way too many mosquitos, but this white trash chick ain’t giving up.
Good thing, since the fate of the world is resting on her undead shoulders.
My Review
Wow, this book was action packed! And I think this was the perfect ending for this series! A lot of things wrapped up, so much action, but also so many things to look forward to just knowing these characters will be moving on in their lives and world.
Also, stop now if you don’t want spoilers, because I am sure I will have many of them in my review of this last book!
First of all I HAVE to mention the fact that all of a sudden the narrator is pronouncing one of the character’s names totally different. Listening to the audiobook, maybe I don’t know the correct spelling. But in the first 5 books they said Dr. Kristy Cherish. In this one, it was Dr. Kristy CHAR-ish. So maybe it is spelled like that in the book? Just seems crazy they waited till the last audiobook to correct the narrator. But other than that, the narrator, same as all the other books, was incredible and so perfect for the Angel Crawford character.
I also was so excited for how the cover of this one connected to the story. Biggie and Tupac are such awesome characters/pets for Angel!
Now at the end of the last book, Angel had kind of fallen apart and had to be regrown. So the beginning of this book was her finally being recovered/regrown. But we were learning that the whole Judd thing and the shambler zombie epidemic really came down to what had happened to Angel’s parasite when it got damaged. So that totally sucked for Angel to have to deal with knowing her lapse in judgement with the zombie mods in the last two books led to such a horrible thing happening. But of course it wasn’t all as clear cut and just spreading like a normal disease, there was a villain behind it all. And Angel followed each little breadcrumb to help the Tribe figure it out. We also saw Kang finally wake up after being regrown from his head.
This was one of those stories where it seemed like our hero, Angel, just could NOT catch a break! And then we think maybe her new love interest, who’d I’d wondered about for a few books now, might be sick and turning, and that makes even more things need to be figured out as quickly as possible. New friends are made, we find out old friends/allies may know more about Pietro/Pierce than we were led to believe. I had a lot of guesses about why people kept saying Angel’s name when they were sick, and I think that guess was kind of proven. However I was kind of wrong about who/what the mole turned out to be, or not to be.
There was just so much going on in this story. Learning more about Pietro and Dr. Nykas’s back story, a moment of feeling for Dr. Charish? But then realizing she’s still just evil. The gators, Nick, Angel’s dad, mature zombies, the FBI, so much good! There were a few things that maybe wrapped up a little quickly, but that’s okay because in the end it was all done just right. I loved this series so much, would love it someone would turn it into a tv series or movies. I’m so glad I joined into this read-a-long, and hope maybe next year there might be another series I’m looking to read that will be done as well!
Lisa I am so glad you joined us. Thank you! This is a fun series and I’m glad to have finally read it. It is Charish and spelled that way. The last half of this year, the 2024-2 read-along is the Mageri series by Dannika Dark which is also UF. Next year 2025 is a combo The Edge (PNR) 4 books, and Innkeeper (scifi UF?) 6 books by Ilona Andrews. So it would be possible to do one part or the other. They are all in the same world which is why I am putting them into one Read-along.
I’ve wanted to maybe read Ilona Andrews, so I’ll look into those series to see if they are ones I’d want to do next year! I cannot add anything else to read this year. lol
I am nearly done with this one (done enough that I’m not worried about spoilers). I WAS SO ANNOYED by the change in name pronunciation. WHY?? I don’t care if it was wrong for 5 books, don’t change it for one. Anyhow, this one was so much fun – my favorite of them all. I’m so sad that I’ll miss the discussion tomorrow.
I guess it is spelled Charish, and I can see why someone might say Cherish, because of Parish? But still, why change the pronunciation in the last book? It pulled me out every time she said it! But still so good! Sorry you can’t make the discussion! We’ll miss you!
I’m still going to pronounce it “Cherish” because that’s how it’s in my head now! I had no idea it was spelled Charish because I didn’t look at the e-copy much. I did enjoy how all things worked out and I agree, it would make a great movie/tv series! I had fun with our discussion! I’m not sure I’ll do the next read-along. We’ll see.
I know, right? lol Since I only listened and didn’t read an e-book or physical book, I just went with how they pronounced it. I can’t believe they would wait till the final book to fix that pronunciation though! It was a fun chat! I won’t be doing the next read-along, it just doesn’t grab me, and I’ve got so many other things scheduled to read for review, plus trying to get my TBR somewhat read, just can’t add in more!
