Weekly Wrap-Up #121 – June 4th, 2023

Posted June 4, 2023 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 21 Comments

Sunday was the last real day in Branson with my family. We did mini-golf, the aquarium, and then pizza for dinner. While the kids and their parents went to do go-karts and other rides after dinner, I came back to the cabin with my mom and stepdad and got some reading done.

Monday we got up and packed and all headed home separately as we all drove on our own. It was a quick trip home. I stopped by my favorite Osceola Cheese store and got some cheese as I always do. Got home and unpacked, then went and picked my dogs up. Got to visit with the few puppies that were there for a bit, but it was pretty hot outside, so didn’t stay long. Took my dogs home and just hung out the rest of the night with them, and they were happy to be home for sure!

Tuesday was hard to get up in the morning and go to work. No students for a few days, but still, the getting up in the morning is hard. The new principal was there for a bit today, our current principal was giving him a tour and brought him through the library so I got to meet him. His name is Andrew McCarthy. No, not the movie star, lol. Came home and mowed the yard, it is so hot already! But I guess it is almost June today.

Wednesday was about the same as Tuesday at work. Although with it being the day before summer school started I had teachers coming to get textbooks and also trying to figure out what to do with 9th grader laptops. Just came home straight after work to spend time with the dogs. Especially because Dora really did need a bath, so I gave both dogs a bath.

Thursday, first day of summer school. Several things went wrong or were a little crazy, as first days of anything usually are. First I found out since I am considered classified instead of certified as just a library clerk, I have to use the time clock. Then we had some issues with the laptops for the 9th graders as we tried to get them all checked out. They had the counselors sitting in the library to meet with students who either were missing classes on their summer school schedule or had already taken what they got signed up for. Well a couple of them complained about it being too cold in the library. I told them I was sorry, but I was hot all the time, so that’s how we kept it.

Friday was a little calmer for summer school. I still had a few kids who needed laptops because they weren’t there on Thursday. My clerk was gone because her mom was having surgery. Normally she and I would only be there till Monday because we have 5 days. But with me doing summer school, I’m there all of June. Friday night I just wanted to stay at home and relax, but my brother invited me over for dinner at their house.

Saturday morning I met my dad, step-mom and one of my sisters at a restaurant called The Classic Cup in our Plaza area. I had a yummy burger! My sister had been giving back an old ipad to my stepmom, and they ended up letting me take it to try and see if I would want to take that on my trip to Scotland with me instead of taking my laptop.

Books Finished

The first three were e-galleys, one for a review, and two for blog tour reviews. Fourth was an audiobook, one of the books for the Gateway library committee. Fifth was also an audiobook.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

First was what I used my monthly Audible Credit on. The rest were on sale for around $3 or so on Audible, so I had to buy them.

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

This is for a blog tour in August!

Free E-books:

Saw the first one was free on Amazon through the Bookbub website and had to go grab it as I have enjoyed this author’s books in the SmartyPants Romance world. The second one is from another favorite author and she posted about this one being free on Amazon in her newsletter this past week. The third one was one of the Amazon First Reads for Prime members. The fourth one was also free on Amazon.

Physical Books:

So, even though I’ve set a budget and this is over my monthly budget, I got the second half of my stipend for doing the online class mentoring at school. And I hate that part of my job, so I decided I deserved to buy myself some books. The two standing up I read this past month. The one laying down is the next one I need in that series. They all have kind of an orange color with the spine or background, so they kind of match too! The second picture are an ARC and a finished copy both from publishers who reached out to see if I’d like to read and review. One will be in June, as it is for Pride month, and the other is not till August I think.

What I’m Watching

Continuing to watch Silo, as it seems to be on weekly. Also a new show started this week called The Rising, and so far, the first episode was interesting enough to keep watching. I guess it came out in the UK in 2022? And now they’re showing in the US for the summer?

Coming Up Next Week On My Blog

The first and last one are physical ARCs from publishers, hope to read and post reviews this week. The second one is an e-galley from the author’s review team. Should be posting my review on Tuesday. The third and fourth are also e-galleys, I think publisher for the 3rd book, and I downloaded from Edelweiss for the Ali Hazelwood.

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time! My current monthly giveaway is HERE. I started a new giveaway this past week. Remember if I get over 100 entries in that monthly giveaway I add more winners, and the last four months I had over 100, so that was two winners each month this year so far.

Upcoming Scotland Tour Tidbits

Now, I’m starting to wonder if I’d be more comfortable staying in a hotel the first two nights I’m in Scotland instead of the Airbnb I’ve booked. Just the familiarity of a hotel as opposed to an Airbnb. The Airbnb I’ve already reserved has really high ratings and no low ratings that I can find, but I’m still just getting more nervous the closer it gets. So I ended up on Friday going ahead and reserving a hotel.

For the 4th night, which will be our final night together on the tour, we will be having a traditional fish and chips dinner in an award winning restaurant. We will have entertainment provided by Gillebride MacMillan who was Gwyllyn the Bard from Outlander, and he is an award-winning Gaelic singer. That is the plan unless for some reason his availability changes. On the left is a picture of him in real life holding a painting of his character on the show, which you can see in the image on the right.

Final Thoughts

How was your week? Did you read or watch anything good? Get any good books? Can you believe it is already June? This week will make it one month till my trip to Scotland, I can’t believe it! Here’s a picture of a double rainbow we had this past week on Wednesday as I was driving to work. Don’t worry, I took this picture as I was stopped at a stoplight, not driving.

  1. Sounds like a busy week! Glad the last few days in Branson were fun! I can’t wait to take my mini vacation later this month! I’m hoping the weather holds out and is nice! You never know in Wisconsin! It is usually cooler but every once in awhile, the heat and humidity follow us! That double rainbow is really cool! I saw one a few weeks ago like that and I even submitted it to our news channel as they share “photos of the day!” I was psyched when I saw it shared the very next day!

Nice new reads! Those are all new to me ones but I hope you will enjoy each and every one of them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

Ooh, I hope you get the cooler weather in Wisconsin. A friend of mine was telling me they have a place in Minnesota and I kind of want to ask if I could go use it for a small mini-vacation some time.

  2. Wow, you must be so excited about Scotland. since I’ve been doing language parties online, everyday my mind drifts off to travelling and what it would be like. Sounds exciting!!!! Hope it brings out a side of you that you enjoy.

I’m very excited! Trying not to think about how much it is all going to end up having cost after it is all said and done, so it may be the only trip like this I take. So I plan to enjoy it! Hope you get to travel with all your language studies some day!

Yeah, I can understand that! I have kids now again because of summer school, but nothing like the normal school year. Although I actually have to be there 15 minutes earlier and stay 15 minutes later, even though the day is the same length as a normal school day. Which I think that is crazy too!

  3. Branson sounds fun! And I love specialty cheese shops. If I see one I’m probably stopping ha.

I LOVE silo. I’m so hooked on that show. the fact that it’s only coming out weekly is killing me. The rising looks awesome. My kinda show. What streamer are you watching it on? I want to try. It sort of reminds me of the Returned (the french version). Did you ever watch that?

I need to stop more often at specialty cheese stores, but I always stop at Osceola. Yes, I hate that it is only once a week! Well, I have YouTube TV, so I watch The Rising live on the CW channel. Not sure where it might be streaming? I don’t think I ever watched The Returned. I might have to look into that!

If it would only rain enough here for a rainbow. They are going to volunteer watering of grass to upgrade to mandatory by july or august. Yes it’s that bad here and I’m in the midwest.

I started The Warning, but had to put it aside for a book I had to review by a certain day, but will be picking it up again later this week.

This is a series I started listening but then a character bashed The Big Bang Theory and I quit, lol. But I’m going back and giving it another try!

  5. I can imagine the dogs are glad to have you home. 🙂 I hope the new principal works out well. Thursday sounded really hectic! I am glad Friday was a bit calmer.

I want to check out SILO if I can. I need to see if my husband cancelled our Apple TV subscription.

You must be so excited about your upcoming trip! I would love to visit Scotland someday. Have a great week, Lisa!

I’m hopeful since the district and school I googled that the new principal is from has a great library, that maybe he’ll be supportive! Silo is good! Just hoping my Apple TV trial doesn’t end before I finish it since they are just doing one a week.
