Weekly Wrap-Up #111 – March 19th, 2023

As usual I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

Over halfway through March! And one week closer to my spring break! Did you do anything for St. Patrick’s Day? Not me, just school.

Sunday was a nice quiet day, sleeping “late” helped with the Daylight Savings Time change I think. Had a nice family dinner at my mom’s again. Enjoyed playing Uno with my 5 year old nephew. He’s quite the character!

Monday was a crazy day at school. No tech people, had to enroll a few more students into classes in the online program we use. Dealing with the mother of one who says her daughter is logging in and doing work, but the report I get each week shows she hasn’t spent much time at all in her classes. Mom’s at work while student is home all day, so knowing teens like I know, and this student, I’m guessing she’s telling mom what she wants to hear.

Tuesday was another busy day with the online students. Same mother sending emails saying the daughter would just drop out for the rest of the year since they couldn’t figure out how to do the online class. Also I’m in charge of the daily loaner laptops for students who forget their laptop that day or maybe it’s being repaired. The goal is to have students return them at the end of the day. But teachers don’t reply to the emails I send to remind them to send students back, and students don’t remember half the time either. So we actually have none left to give out because none of the 8 get returned. And there is one student who has two loaner laptops. He borrowed one, and then supposedly the day he was going to bring it back – again because he took it home – the car he rode to school in was in a wreck and now the car is sitting at the repair shop and he can’t get his book bag with both the original laptop he got at the beginning of the year, plus the first loaner laptop. And we were made to give him a second loaner because he has night school and had to have one to do his work. Haven’t seen him since last week when we gave him that one. Oh, did I mention this student comes to school late EVERY day? And the library is right by the front door of the school. So we’ve watched him walk in late all week so far carrying nothing. Not even the second loaner laptop we gave him.

Oh yeah, and the Penny Reid Knitting in the City 10 year anniversary Kickstarter started on Tuesday. The first goal was like $25,000 and I think it was met within the first half hour after midnight! I wanted so bad to get the whole set so I could get the new book that otherwise won’t come out till 2024, that level is $349, but I am being good to save money for my Scotland trip. If you’re into her books and somehow didn’t know about this, you can go HERE to check it out.

Wednesday started off three busy days for me. First it was sooooo nice weather-wise, and so in the afternoon I stopped by my friends house and visited with the puppies. I got to sit outside on the ground and let the puppies climb all over my legs. Piles of dachshund puppies are the best for making things just feel okay. Here are some pictures!

Thursday was a crazy day. The temperature dropped by lunch time, and then it started pouring rain as the school day was over. We had a staff meeting after school. And then I had signed up to chaperone a band/orchestra concert later that night. So I had to drive home and let my dogs out and then drive back to school for the concert. It’s a 25 minute drive either way. The concert was quick and I really didn’t have much to do. However as I was heading home at around 7:30 pm, the rain had turned to fluffy snowflakes. None of it really stuck on the ground because it was too warm from the day before.

Friday was a crazy day. Busy at school all day. But then I headed home to relax! We had snow again when I got home too. Big fluffy snowflakes again. But it had actually been kind of nice, I mean I didn’t need my coat too much before I got home. I unfortunately realized that I’d left my blog planner at school on my desk though.

Saturday I woke up and decided I was going to do my best to make it through the weekend without my planner. The only big issues is that I couldn’t remember what I was supposed to post, if anything on Monday. I went and hung out with my dad, stepmom, and youngest sister at a Starbucks near my sister’s house. Then I went to the movies.

Books Finished

The first two of these were e-galleys for blog tour reviews. The third one was one of the books for the Gateway Reader Award committee I’m on. Although I feel like it is more of a middle grade book than for high school. Last was the audiobook I’ve been listening to. Another one for the Gateway committee.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

Just got this one on Thursday. But I was part of a tour for it already!

Audiobooks:

None

Bookish Stuff:

The local chapter of the Missouri Association of School Librarians (MASL), the Greater Kansas City Association of School Librarians (GKCASL), had a shirt made with the award names and other library words in the shape of our state along with a heart where we are located. That arrived on Saturday.

E-galleys:

First two are for blog tours at the end of March. The third one the publisher reached out and while they offered a physical copy, when I replied one day later they were out of them. So I accepted the e-galley. It comes out at the beginning of June, so that’s when to expect a review closer to that time! The fourth one I thought I was getting a physical ARC, but did not get it. I went ahead and used the Netgalley link, but it doesn’t have the option to send to my Kindle, so I’m still trying to figure out how I’ll read it on my Kindle. Will have to add the Netgalley app on my Kindle before next week I guess.

Free E-books:

Free on Amazon, and since I just read a book by her, I figured I’d get this free one for a future read.

Physical Books:

First two pictures were from mail I got on Thursday. The first one was for a blog tour review I posted yesterday. I read the e-galley for that. The second pile is for the Gateway Award committee. However, they are all, except one – The Luminaries – not the first in a series, so they aren’t eligible. They will all be donated to my school library though! Then I got an email this past week saying I’d been selected to receive a physical copy of Piper Sheldon’s new book, and I’m so excited! It came on Saturday and I can’t wait to read it! It doesn’t come out till the end of the month, so my review won’t be for a couple more weeks.

What I’m Watching

Continuing my rewatch of The Walking Dead. Seeing episodes I really didn’t remember. Went to see a movie on Saturday, and I picked a good one! It was really a feel good movie, had a bit of maybe what might be considered a little vulgarness as he is mostly dealing with a team of boys/men, so kind of some guy talk, but nothing bad in my opinion. And I liked the way the woman got to be in the relationship. It is called Champions, and here is the trailer:

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

The first two are e-galleys for reviews, the second one a blog tour. The third one I requested a physical ARC for, but never heard back. They did send a Netgalley widget, so I will end up reading it that way I guess.

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time! My monthly giveaway is HERE. Remember if I get over 100 entries in that monthly giveaway I add more winners, I had 103 last month so had two winners.

Scotland Tour Tidbits

The first place we’ll be going on the 3rd day is the Doune castle, which was used for Castle Leoch, home of the MacKenzie Clan on the show. It is the castle ruins that Claire and her husband Frank visit before Claire goes back in time. And then where she ends up spending most of her first bit of time in the show. The first picture is an aerial view of the castle. The second is a shot from when Frank and Claire visited, and the third is Claire on the back of Jamie’s horse when they first return.

Oh, and this castle was also used on the pilot of Game of Thrones, Outlaw King, and Monty Python’s Holy Grail.

Final Thoughts

How was your week? Did you read or watch anything good? Get any good books? Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in any way? I’m still counting down till spring break here! I found a picture in my Facebook memories from a year ago. My little Dora and Argyle all snuggled up together on top of the blankets for a change!

  1. Sounds like a crazy week what with all these laptops! My niece uses one at school too and I’ve seen her with different ones multiple times…like the colors are different and I keep wondering what she is doing. But like you, knowing teens (even these early preteens) they aren’t doing just their homework, neither is my niece. I mean, generations of students have gotten by without needing these laptops, I don’t know why they have them now. I can understand for at home learning, to help connect with teachers and whatnot, but not the way my niece uses it. But I guess it’s just the changing of the times. But it seems costly for the schools when laptops continuously go missing or get broken.

Nice new reads! My copy of Gretchen’s book was sent to my old address for reasons I still can’t comprehend. The publisher did this with my last book too. They have the old address on file, but I give the book tour company my new one but for whatever reason the publisher doesn’t use it! Luckily, my sister currently lives at the old address so I can still get the book, but this weekend she and her husband and at least one child, either caught a bug or got food poisoning or something because they were both sick and then she said my nephew just threw up all over her. So I was feeling terrible for her and since I don’t want to catch any bugs/germs decided that the book could wait until next week. What I will do for my instagram post tomorrow is unclear. I’ll just have to have a picture of the book I guess since I didn’t get to use my book in a creative post. Oh well.

Hope you enjoy all of your lovely new reads!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

The teachers do so much on the laptops/online these days they have to have them. Like final tests are on the laptop I guess, because at the end of the last school year I couldn’t get laptops turned in to the library until the very last hour of the very last day of school. And guess who had to check them all in. so annoying. Hoping this year they are supposedly going to let them keep the laptops over the summer so my last day won’t be so ridiculous. Hope you’re able to get your copy of the McNeil book from your sister soon! It was good.

Interesting! Glad to know I wasn’t the only one either! Having a friend who is a dachshund breeder is the best! It (mostly) satisfies my longing for a puppy when I already have two, lol.

I remember my spring break last year we had so much rain and freezing weather, but no snow. I’ve got another week till spring break, and right now it looks like there might be some warmer days I’m hoping. Hope you had a nice spring break!

Yeah, that’s what crazy. I’m about to start making a repeat offenders list and not check out to them again. I mean they should have to suffer some consequences about not having a laptop, right? How else will they learn that they need to remember their computer? They sure remember to bring a completely charged cell phone every day to school, even though they’re not supposed to be using those.

    • Lisa Mandina

Fortunately I don’t have to do the actual teaching online. It’s just making sure the kids are spending time in the classes and doing work and then communicating with parents and students. Thanks for visiting!

We have some snowy winters. But it’s not every year. But we don’t get a lot of it usually either. Once in awhile we do though. WE have IT people in the building, but they don’t do any of the checking out of laptops, that is all the librarians job. Pretty much all our IT people do is repair computers and tech in the building it seems like. Puppies make everything better!

  2. I didn’t do anything for St. PAtty’s. It kind of came and went fast! Those puppies are so cute! I’ve always loved daschunds.

I haven’t been to the movies in a while. I kinda want to see 65 but I’ve heard mixed things…

    • Lisa Mandina

It was pretty fast! I think all I did was wear green, lol. Forgot to even go get a Shamrock Shake from McDonald’s. Yeah, 65 looks like great special effects, but not sure if it actually looks that good to me. I kind of just want to see dinosaurs, lol.

  3. I want to play with a pile of dachshund puppies! They look so cute. I didn’t do anything for St. Patrick’s day except to take my sister to her surgery, which went extremely well.

I went and played with the puppies again today! It is so wonderful! Glad your sister’s surgery went well!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yes, it was so good to have my planner once I got to work. Feeling more on top of things. Hope you enjoy the new McNeil book like I did!

  4. Both your dogs and those pups are SO CUTE!! I bet it’s such a joy just to have puppy time.

We got corned beef meals from the local restaurant and ate with friends. We hung out, chatted, played games.

After I was on a reading tear, I’ve not read in three days! First, my daughter and I were watching the second season of Shadow and Bone, and then my schedule was so busy, and remains that way for the week. I had finally gotten on top of my review schedule and now I’m falling behind. *sigh*

I hope your week is good and that there aren’t more laptop issues!

    • Lisa Mandina

I still need to finish the first season of Shadow and Bone. I think what happened was I picked up my phone instead of just giving all my attention to one episode and I got bored. Hope you’re getting back on track, but if not, it’s only important you’re enjoying blogging! 🙂
