Weekly Wrap-Up #109 – March 5th, 2023

Posted March 5, 2023 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 40 Comments

As usual I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

March is here! And that means spring break is coming! Well, not till the end of the month for my school.

The week started out nice with dinner at my mom’s house again on Sunday night. Late that night, or maybe early Monday morning, there were severe storms, but not too severe where I lived, we were on the edge. I slept through it all. Storms are just the perfect sleeping weather for me.

Monday was crazy in the morning at school. And I’m still so frustrated with how the district does the online school for our long term students, homebound students, and those taking one or two classes while going to school regularly. There are so many different people doing it, I just feel like they need to hire one person to do all of it. Because I get so many different instructions on what to do, and then sometimes I’m asked about things to do with the system that I don’t even know about because I’m not actually a teacher through the program. Weather was beautiful on Monday. I also had some guy riding my bumper as I was driving to the doctor’s office after school. When I pulled into my spot in the parking lot, he stopped behind me and had his phone pointing at me as I got out of my car. I have no idea what his problem was, but I made sure to get a picture of his license plate as he drove away.

Tuesday was mostly a slow day. I was by myself half the day as my clerk had to take her husband to a doctor appointment in the afternoon.

Wednesday my library clerk was gone all day. It wasn’t busy, but it was like constantly there was something happening, or someone coming to need something. I did get some organizing done and a few other things I wanted.

Thursday my library clerk was back for the day. It was a kind of busy day in the library. I was able to move the bookcase I wanted so I could put my display table more visible and so that was nice. I’ll take a picture tomorrow probably after I get my Women’s History Month Display up. I decided to skip this month’s Book of the Month because there weren’t any I wanted. So that means I still have the credit I paid for at the beginning of February. Thereby not adding to my March book buying budget.

Friday my clerk left halfway through the day again, more things to have to take care of her family. The day was mostly quiet though. We did have a shot clinic where students who needed vaccinations of any sort could get them taken care of. Only like 18 students actually signed up though. In the afternoon I was sitting at my desk looking through books on Goodreads, and my principal kept walking through. To be fair we have a little kitchen area in our back room and that is where he keeps his lunch. But I kept feeling like I wasn’t doing anything and he was noticing, even though I was looking at new books to add to lists for future purchases. But still!

Saturday enjoyed sleeping in. Having issues with my YouTube TV again though it seems. Had to unplug my router or whatever it’s called these days and restart the whole system. But then it kept stopping and buffering once it had restarted. I miss the days of just cable tv, even satellite tv wasn’t this much of a pain. Then I went and had a late lunch/early dinner with my dad for his birthday. It’s the first time I’d seen him since last summer when my stepmom’s mother passed away. I had a nice time catching up with him and my stepmom and youngest sister.

Books Finished

First was an ARC that I posted my review at the beginning of the week. The second two were e-galleys from the author/publisher. The second one I posted the review on Friday.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

This was my Audible credit purchase this month. I’ve wanted to read these for a while, especially since the setting is my home state of Missouri!

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

The first one was because the publisher reached out to me about getting it on Netgalley since I got the author’s last book there and reviewed it. While I was there downloading that one, I started browsing the YA titles available and saw the second one. I really enjoyed the author’s first book, not only set at the school in Kansas City, Kansas where I was a librarian before my current job, but she is from KCK as well. Her book didn’t get picked up by B&N to be put on the shelves when it came out, a decision I am not happy about, and so I am all about supporting her in any way. Plus it sounds good, and I am excited to read it! The third one is for a blog tour coming up next week!

Free E-books:

This one was free on Amazon

Physical books:

So I’ve only read the first one in this series for the first picture, but it hooked me so much that when the author said she was doing a special package if you pre-ordered this one, I had to go ahead and get it. Especially since I’m still sad that I didn’t get a ticket to Book Bonanza this year after having been to all the others and I asked her to apply to go as an author, and she did, and now I won’t get to meet her. 🙁 The second picture is of a finished copy that I got from the publisher. It is for a review at the beginning of April. Third pictures is a book I bought from the author when she sent a coupon for her Etsy shop. It came with a fun map of the town for this series and a little coaster that you can see in the front.

What I’m Watching

Continuing my rewatch of The Walking Dead. And I was so excited that the latest season of Survivor started on Wednesday. It was an injury filled first episode with one contestant already having to leave from being injured.

Coming Up Next Week On My Blog

All of these are e-galleys for reviews, the first is from Netgalley from the publisher, the second is for the author’s review team, third is from Rock Star Book tours for blog tour this week, and the fourth is also from Netgalley from the publisher.

I’ve also got some promo posts.

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time! My new monthly giveaway started this past Wednesday HERE. Remember if I get over 100 entries in that monthly giveaway I add more winners.

Scotland Tour Tidbits

The last tour stop on the 2nd day is Culloden. This is the battlefield in real life and I’m sure will be a very solemn stop to think about all the lives lost in that battle. The first picture shows one of the clan markers as you look out over the field. The second picture is from the tv show and the battle.

Final Thoughts

How was your week? Did you read or watch anything good? Get any good books? Enjoy this picture of my two enjoying a spot of sunlight on Saturday afternoon.

  1. Sounds like a busy week! The guy following you to your doctor appointment sounds worrisome! Hopefully nothing comes of it, but at least you got his plates too. Weird. Glad the week was mostly manageable after that!

Nice new reads too! Super excited for Mister Magic myself! I loved Kiersten’s Hide when I finally read it last year! Also super excited for that one in graphic novel form this year! Hope you enjoy all of your new reads!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I really liked Hide. Didn’t realize there was going to be a graphic novel of that, so cool! Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Well, I’m not sure how either, but it’s how things have been since she’s been there. The dogs are loving the sun again today!

  2. We’ve had a lot of e-learning days in Minnesota as well. I sometimes give up and just teach my son a few things from home, shrugs. Sometimes the district just combines the e-learning days with snow days anyways.

    • Lisa Mandina

These aren’t even just e-learning days. These are kids who are in long term suspension, or home bound for some reason, or some kids who are just needing to take a class or two so they can graduate on time. If it was just an e-learning day/snow day, I wouldn’t actually have anything to do on those days since I’m a high school librarian and I don’t have regular classes.

  3. Our online student management is in disarray as well. I think when COVID first happened, it was all thrown together thinking it was temporary, but now we have kids who are expelled using it, kids who are electing it as an alternative, and kids who need credit recovery using it and we never sat down and got it all organized. Its chaos.
    Have a great week!

Yes! That’s exactly the issue with the online learning here. I deal with students who are homebound for some reason, or kids needing to take credit recovery. I also have to help with the teachers who are the actual mentors for our long term suspended kids. I learned this year that a suspension can last a year! It’s a mess and I wish I didn’t have to do it. But unfortunately I did know it was part of the job when I took the job, just not to the extent it has turned out to be. Thanks for visiting!

  4. I’m so glad March is here! And I kinda of miss cable TV too. I was so glad to cancel it and save money, but now there are so many streaming services… ugh.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, it’s like streaming is a bunch of different cable channels that are all separate. Which on the one hand is nice you don’t have to pay for all of them, but it adds up anyway!

  5. I really don’t understand how your library clerk is keeping her job, she’s always out. I never had cable so I don’t miss it. I love seeing them in the sun spot, Lulu does that too.

My thought as well! Wow, you never had cable! That definitely would make a difference in not missing. My dogs seem to have taken a while to find this sun spot in the house we moved to in 2019, they had the ones at our old house, but are just seeming to get in this one more.

  6. Hello! I’ve been gone for about two weeks and have fallen behind in everything. BUT the sun and warm weather, etc. was worth it. I celebrated my birthday last week while on vacation with my family, visiting my mom and dad in FL. It was sunny and hot and we hung by the pool!

It’s nice that your school district offers online learning, even if it’s a hassle. Ours no longer offers it, so when my daughter was out for three weeks because of surgery, she had to make it all up after she went back to school.

I hope you have a great week ahead!

That sounds like an awesome vacation! I’m so jealous! I won’t get to take any trips till summer. That is too bad they didn’t offer it for your daughter. I think we might have had students work through a Google classroom with their current teachers in that situation like your daughter’s. The online school I do though is through an outside program, so would be hard for just a 3 week absence to work. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, no idea about that guy. I mean I can’t even imagine what would make him do that? I’m reading Quinn’s new one and loving it right now!

  7. I’m curious as to why that man was following you? So strange. A great haul of books once again! I look forward to reading your review of Lynn Painter’s newest which is on my TBR. Have a good week.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I was weirded out as well. I didn’t even notice him behind me until I got to the stoplight right before I had to turn into where the doctor was. And when I say I didn’t notice, that means there wasn’t anyone that close to me at that time. It was so weird! I can’t wait to get started on the Lynn Painter book!

  8. Spending time with family is nice. Nice to hear your storms weren’t too bad. I hate it when a boss hovers. I moved nine months ago and I hardly ever see my boss here. My last boss was a nightmare. I don’t miss her one bit.

Hope you enjoy Barbarian Mine, the series is fun and super hot!

Well, I don’t know if he was hovering exactly, but he kept walking through and it made me feel like I was being checked on after a while. Otherwise he’s really pretty easy to deal with. I can’t wait to move on in the Ruby Dixon series!

  9. I will actually be taking time off for spring break this year. I usually can’t get the time off from work. I’m looking forward to that later this month. Fairy Godmothers, Inc is on my TBR shelf. I hope you enjoy the audio version. I look forward to reading it someday. Your new books all sound good. I look forward to reading your thoughts on Mr. and Mrs. Witch and The Love Wager. Jade Adia’s book is new, to me, but I will have to look for that one. Love the photo of your dogs in the sunlight. My cats are always seeking out sunspots around the house. 🙂 I hope you have a great week.

    • Lisa Mandina

I really enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. Witch, my review went up today if you get by to check it out! I hope you get to enjoy a nice spring break this year!

  10. Your pups look like they’re glowing in that picture! I think it’s great that your school offers vaccines to students, even if not that many take them up on it. It seems like a good service to have for kids who might otherwise not get themselves to a doctor or clinic.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, it’s not the best picture of them, not very clear, but it was too cute not to take! I think the shot clinic was great. Last year they even offered the Covid vaccine once it was available for that age group, and also the boosters for teachers/adults who wanted to get it.

  11. I’m sorry you’ve been so busy at work. It doesn’t seem fair. I watched Survivor too, and I haven’t watched it in years! I hope you have a great week, Lisa.

I am very glad! Seems like we’re having a pretty mild weather year so far in 2023, knock on wood!

  12. Your two pups look so happy in the sunshine! That’s creepy about the guy following you. Glad you didn’t have to interact with him in anyway and glad you got a picture of a plate! Have a great week!

  13. Yeah, it sounds like your school could really use someone that fully focuses on online teaching for all those students. Sounds like a lot to keep up with! Yay for spring break coming up. We are on mine now, where I work, though I still have to work. Bummer because it’s really not busy at all.

Ugh, that stinks that you still have to work! Back when I had a second job I would spend my spring break working, but now that I don’t, I intend to relax and read!
