Weekly Wrap-Up #107 – February 19th, 2023

As usual I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

While my brother did have a little get together just for our family to watch at least the first half of the Super Bowl together, I decided to stay home since I still had a little cough. Plus my superstitious mind said I had to stay home and watch since that is how I’d watched the last few that they’d won. And in the end, we won! But barely! The Eagles and the Chiefs were so evenly matched! Each had their strengths. I feel like it came down to lucky or unlucky calls for us to win. But I think we earned it.

Monday morning I had to take my little Argyle and drop him at the vets to get his teeth cleaned. They ended up having to pull two teeth, poor little guy was out of it when I picked him up. We waited all day for our school district to cancel for the Super Bowl celebration parade on Wednesday as all the other schools around us cancelled, but didn’t hear anything all day. It’s crazy because the Chiefs stadium is like right on the outside of our district lines. In fact, the neighborhood right across the street from the stadium complex is our district. But in the evening we did get a call like we would for a snow day saying they’d canceled Wednesday for the parade.

Tuesday seemed like a really long day. Partly because my dog Dora actually is the one who kept waking me up. I don’t think she liked the way Argyle smelled after the vets and I didn’t have time to give him a bath, just used those wipes for cleaning dogs. So whenever I’d lift the covers up for her to go under, she wouldn’t go. Can you tell I barely noticed it was Valentine’s Day? We’re more excited about our Chiefs winning the Superbowl this week. I ended up just rewatching more episodes of The Walking Dead on my Valentine’s night. I did treat myself to ordering dinner through Door Dash though.

Wednesday was a lovely morning to sleep in since most local schools had cancelled for the Chiefs Super Bowl celebration parade. I watched the parade at home on my couch with my dogs snuggled under a blanket on my lap. Here are some pictures of the parade and the location where the rally was held at the end of the parade from my TV. Where the rally was held, in front of our Union Station, is also where they are holding the NFL draft in April.

Thursday was a long day of parent conferences back at school. It started with a bit of a scary drive to work as there were a lot of accidents due to ice and snow over the last few hours before rush hour. My drive wasn’t bad. However a teacher in a nearby district was in a head-on collision accident and did pass away from her drive to work, she was a friend of one of my sorority sisters. My school district started conferences at 8 am and went till 8 pm. They provided lunch for us, and we had an hour long meeting and then a half hour for lunch before conferences started again. I didn’t really have much there other than my normal lunch food, and I just wasn’t in the mood by the time dinner time came around, so I just kind of did some snacking.

Friday I had ordered tickets early to go see the new Antman movie. However when I got up in the morning I decided not to go. Since I have the AMC A-List, I didn’t technically pay for the ticket, so I didn’t feel guilty about it. Instead I spent the day at home. First I had issues with my Chipotle delivery order, then the trash truck got stuck I guess at the end of my street, and the local police parked in front of my house to deal with it. And I cleaned out some of my kitchen cabinets with things I hadn’t even touched since I’d moved in three years ago. I’ll be taking them to donate to Good Will this weekend.

Saturday was a local book convention called Flirty in Kansas City. I didn’t know most of the authors, but wanted to go anyway and maybe meet some new favorites! I ended up buying more than I planned. One author I had read several books by was not there, didn’t know till I got there that she wasn’t there. Another one I’d ordered a book from had cancelled Friday night, but I didn’t see the post. I guess she’s going to email about sending the book we ordered. Although if I’m not going to see her, and I haven’t read it, I wouldn’t want it if I hadn’t paid for it. Just don’t know when I’ll get to it. Of course like all the books I bought too. It was really crowded and hot in the two “ballrooms” they had for the convention. They need to move it next year if possible to a place with a bigger room. I was really kind of worried about fire safety as packed as it was in the rooms at time.

Books Finished

The first four were review books, except the first one was a novella that went with the third one as a prequel. I had to buy it to read it before I started End of Story. The last one was for my TBR challenge, and to finish up a series!

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

Not sure, but I think I entered a giveaway for this one from the publisher. Excited to read it!

Audiobooks:

I got an email saying I had a reward of $10 on Audible. So I decided to buy this, it was $10.49, so it only cost me 49 cents.

Bookish Stuff:

Tons of cool swag at the Flirty in Kansas City Convention. A couple fun p*nis lollipops, one was chocolate, and lots of bookmarks and stickers. I love all the stickers!

E-galleys:

We got a link to get the first one on Netgalley from being on the author’s review group. So excited!!! The second one I got from the publisher through a galley-grab sign up, also from Netgalley. It has a very low rating on Goodreads, but I’m still going to give it a try. Neither of these come out till the summer though. Third is for a blog tour review in March, also from Netgalley! Fourth is another blog tour review, but this one is coming up this week. Last is also a blog tour review, this one the beginning of April I think.

Free E-books:

I’m trying really hard to stop looking at emails with free e-books because I never seem to get to any of them to read anyway these days! But I did see one on Bookbub I think, the other was mentioned in an author’s newsletter. The last I had an author at the convention I was at give me a QR code to scan for this one. But all of these were free on Amazon.

Physical Books:

The publisher sent me another one of this series for the first picture, even though I let them know when they sent me the last one that I would not read it as it is below the level of book I read. I ended up donating the other one to my library though, for my SPED kids. I’ll probably do the same with this one. The second picture is of more books for the library committee I’m on. They’re all graphic novels though, and I’m not sure those are eligible for the award committee I’m on, I think it is a different award for those. The last picture is the stack of books that I bought at the Flirty in Kansas City Convention on Saturday. I bought more than I planned, but when I got home and saw it was only 10 books, I felt a little better. Although there are probably two in there that I wouldn’t have bought other than I get pressured easily when I feel bad for an author or they’ve talked to me so long I feel like I have to buy a book, lol. One of the books I bought for the cover, lol, and I bought the special version because the print inside was pink too! It has an illustration in the middle, but I’m not going to share that, it’s quite racy.

What I’m Watching

Of course the Super Bowl was watched last Sunday, and it was a nail biter! I adore our QB1 Patrick Mahomes. Not the same as my love for Travis Kelce. I mean both are great players, but I just adore what a guy Mahomes is. He is just so normal and loves the game, and we love him in Kansas city! And Kelce, he’s such a character! You gotta love Mahomes face as Kelce goes crazy.

Love these two so much I always stop and watch this commercial when it comes on, lol.

Coming Up Next Week On My Blog

All of these are for blog review tours. I should also post my L-L-L reviews for February this week, as well as my DNF post for the month, which I think is just one book at the moment.

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time! My monthly wrap-up has under 100 entries so far. If I get over 100 I add another winner. My December giveaway had over 300 entries so I picked three winners!

Scotland Tour Tidbits

The second day of the tour we are going to start off at The Highland Folk Museum. They filmed the Rent episode in the first season of Outlander here. It’s an outdoor type of museum with lots of buildings to check out. While the hosts of the tour say it’s a disappointment we won’t get to do the wool waulk like they did in the show, I’m okay with that. If you’ve watched the show and know what they use to get the wool wet, yeah, yuck. First picture below is from the museum’s website, second is an image from the show.

Final Thoughts

How was your week? Did you read or watch anything good? Get any good books? Can you believe it is almost the end of February already?

In keeping with the Superbowl theme this post has taken on, I’m sharing a photo I took of Argyle while I was trying to watch the game. He will not sit with me during the Chiefs games because every time I even get a little tense and sigh or inhale sharply he gets irritated and jumps up. Then he’ll go and sit and stare at me like this. lol

  1. I was happy to catch a bit of the super bowl for free on a social media platform called discord. I also learned that Rhianna paid $80,000 a night to stay at a home near Chicago to attend the Bowl.

Very interesting! And crazy! Of course they were saying how much the tickets cost just to go and that was crazy!

The parade was pretty big. But it was cold and I don’t like crowds, so I was happy to watch from home, lol. Thanks for stopping by!

It was exciting for sure! Not sure they can keep doing that every year if we got good enough, but for now it is so much fun!

So originally it made for the students to have a 5 day weekend, and teachers a 4 day weekend. Students ended up with a 6 day weekend!

Yeah, it was a nail biter for sure for us! I will need to find time to fit Ant Man in since I didn’t go this week.

I hope Argyle healed quickly, teeth cleaning is never fun for doggies. Hugs! And such a funny picture of him, mine will do the same if I’m watching something that will make me scream haha. And I love your bookish picture, you got so many amazing bookish goods, I think I spy a chapstick! And I hope you like the audiobook of The Godparent Trap, I read the book and absolute adored it!

    • Lisa Mandina

Argyle seems to be back to about his old self. Oh yeah, there were a couple chapsticks and some other fun things with the swag. I can’t wait till I can fit The Godparent Trap in too. Thanks for visiting!

  3. Oh wow! A day off from school because the Chiefs won?! That’s awesome! Sadly, we never got off when the Rams were still here and won that one Super Bowl when I was a kid. That would’ve been nice though! Lol! Good thing you stayed home to watch the game to help them win! I heard it was close but I stopped watching around halftime!

Oh wow! What a haul! Lots of goodies here! Lots of new to me ones too! I hope you enjoy each and every one of them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

We haven’t won a ton of big things. But I remember when the Royals won the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals and I was a kid that my mom and stepdad went to a parade for it while I was at school, lol. But since we’ve won that again in the last 10 years and then two Super Bowls now, the city seems to do a parade! I think it’s neat, but too many people for me. Thanks for stopping by!

I am feeling back to normal for the most part. Other than a cough popping out every once in a while. Thanks for visiting!

It was a nice long weekend, almost a full week! Yeah, it was a rough week for my friend and for the school where her friend was a teacher.

  4. Sounds like the Super Bowl made your week extremely exciting. I’ll confess that I was on a plane when it happened and didn’t even know who won until way afterward. I’m just not much of a sports fan. But I’m sure if my school was so close to the stadium of a team that was playing that would change things. 🙂 It’s hilarious that your pup gets stressed while you’re watching the game. He probably thinks something terrible is happening!

  5. That’s really cool that they cancel school for a celebration parade. I can’t remember if they did that in Seattle when the Seahawks won years ago. But I live far enough outside the city that it wouldn’t have mattered anyways. Congrats on your team’s win!
I get what you mean about not downloading all those free books! I do have to say that you scored with Pippa Grant’s, though. I loved that book!
