Weekly Wrap-Up #106 – February 12th, 2023

Posted February 12, 2023 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 42 Comments

As usual I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

Sunday was a little anticlimactic with no Chiefs game. But we’re all getting prepared for the big Superbowl taking place on the day I will be posting this! The Kelce Bowl as Travis Kelce on our Kansas City Chiefs will be facing his brother Jason Kelce on the Philadelphia Eagles. This time next week I’ll either be ecstatic about the results of the Super Bowl, or sad and glad football season is over, lol.

Anyway on last Sunday we celebrated my niece’s 11th birthday. I didn’t take any pictures, it wasn’t anything big, just her family, and grandparents on both sides and me.

Monday I was so happy that my library clerk was back. She still was feeling a little under the weather, and was wearing a mask to be safe. But it was nice to get an actual lunch to sit and read and eat for 30 minutes uninterrupted. Then I went and got to see the brand new puppies that my breeder friend has. But they’re too young for touching, so no pictures or getting to play with them.

Tuesday I kept thinking it was Wednesday all day. Continued working on rearranging/organizing all the English class novel sets that are kept in the library. Got my hair done after having to postpone my beginning of January appointment. Then I had a Zoom meeting with the Greater Kansas City chapter of the Missouri Association of School Librarians that lasted till after 8 pm, so I was definitely tired when I went to bed.

Wednesday was another mostly normal day in the library. Although there is one teacher that is sending the same 5 girls every day to the library to “work” all hour. Now, it’s a science class, and as a former science teacher, not sure how they are getting what they need sitting in the library with worksheets. Especially since today they were putting makeup on each other and had their phones out instead of any worksheets most of the time. Since it was a block schedule day, classes about 90 minutes instead of an hour, I reached out to him and let him know, and he said to send them back.

I went to bed Wednesday night, and the weather guy on the 10 pm news said if it wasn’t snowing by 1 am, if it was still raining, we wouldn’t get much snow. Well since it was still raining when I let the dogs out at 1 am, I got up with the alarm, a little early because I knew there would still be some snow. Well right after I got my contacts in, my school district called and said no school. So I took my contacts back out and went back to bed. Enjoyed my lovely snow day at home. Although I had a stuffy nose and a little sore throat like my clerk had before she tested positive for Covid. So I took a test and it was negative.

Friday morning just to be sure, I took another Covid test, still negative. My nose is still stuffy and occasionally I’d have a sore throat but I’m sure that’s from the drainage. Work was another kind of slow day, but that’s okay! I needed it. Plus we’re all so anxious all week for the Super Bowl and our Chiefs. I completely forgot the new episode of The Last of Us was on Friday night so I rewatched a couple more episodes of The Walking Dead. I also posted a Discussion Post HERE about my frustrations of some people’s reviews of a certain popular book right now.

Saturday morning I did a double movie feature. I wanted to see Knock at the Cabin as well as the new Magic Mike movie. Neither was great, but both were at least fun and kept my interest.

Books Finished

First was a book that was for the library committee I’m on. And I LOVED it! I won’t post a review though, till I do my L-L-L post later this month. Second was an audiobook for a blog tour review this past week, and I loved it as well! Third was also a blog tour review. Fourth was for a blog tour review yesterday.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

Bought the first one with my Audible credit. I have heard such good things about it! The second one I got from the library to listen for the library committee I am on.

Bookish Stuff:

I joined author J.J. Knight’s Pickle Patreon and got the Janauary Picklegram in the mail! And then on Friday I got the February Picklegram!

E-galleys:

So this one was sent by the publisher on Netgalley, but it took three times before it seemed to finally go through. Can’t wait to read this one!

Free E-books:

First was a free novella on Amazon, and the second was also free on Amazon. All the rest were for signing up for author’s newsletters. Now the one below I bought, but since it is a prequel to one of the books I’m reading for review this week, I thought I’d better go ahead and get it and get started.

Physical books:

These are for a blog tour in a couple weeks, or more like a week and a half I think. I’ve already read the first two, and I thought the second one ended in a way that there would be another, but there wasn’t. And now there is and I’m so excited!

What I’m Watching

So I decided to do a rewatch of The Walking Dead from the very beginning. I gave up in about the 8th or 9th season after Rick disappeared and then they jumped ahead in time. Hopefully by binging it this way I can make it all the way through the end. Watching that first episode again I remembered just how good that show was at the beginning, that first episode has one of the scariest scenes for me in any show. When the woman comes up and looks in the door’s peephole, that always creeps me out! And it’s so much fun to see all the characters so young!

As I mentioned, I went to see two movies on Saturday. Both were good, but not great. Fun to go see at the movies though.

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

The first one is an ARC review. Second is an e-galley for a blog tour this week. The last one I thought I’d have the ARC earlier but it just came last week, so now I’m trying to fit it in this week.

We’ve got parent conferences Wednesday afternoon/evening and Thursday all day. Friday we have off. IF the Chiefs win the Superbowl then our city is supposedly doing a parade on Wednesday. So wondering how that would affect conferences. I hate that they’re already planning, because I feel like it’s a jinx!!

I also have the Flirty in Kansas City Convention on Saturday. Most of the authors are new to me, but I love going and meeting authors, and since I missed out on getting a ticket to Book Bonanza for the first time since it started, this might be my only author convention this year.

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time!

Scotland Tour Tidbits

Still not a fan of the prices for plane tickets. Although I happened to catch a “travel expert” on a talk show saying that the best time to buy international travel tickets was around 120 days before the trip. That’s around the beginning of March. Then I’ll probably give in and go ahead and spend the money even if it isn’t down where I want it.

The next Outlander themed stop on the first day of the tour is Midhope Castle aka Lallybroch, Jamie’s family home in the show. Again first is a picture of the castle in real life. Second is a picture from the show. Taken from inside the castle walls.

Final Thoughts

How was your week? Did you read or watch anything good? Get any good books? Will you be watching the Superbowl? Or are you like me about 5 years ago when the only reason you might watch is for the commercials or because you were going to a friend’s party so you might see it because you were there, but you don’t really care?

The two of them were so cute watching me on the computer. And then Dora just had to lay her head on her brother Argyle and that was even cuter.

  1. Sorry to hear you got sick! Everyone seems to have caught something this week, but glad to hear it wasn’t Covid. Hope you feel better soon! I’m pretty sure I will be falling asleep before the game is even over. I did not sleep well last night and finally reached the point of giving up trying to despite being tired. Bizarre dream woke me up and naturally, I can’t remember what it was! Lol.

Nice new reads! Those are all new to me ones but I hope you will enjoy each and every one of them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

I know I’ll go to bed probably before the game is over, but will have the tv on in my bedroom with the game going I’m sure, lol. Not planning to go anywhere because I believe in too many superstitions and I think I need to be home watching for them to win. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

It’s crazy to think about 5 years ago I wouldn’t have been watching either. Or if I went to a party I’d just have gone for commercials and food, lol. Be careful on your drive, and yeah, I think most people will be inside starting around 6 pm for the game!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I didn’t watch last year since the Bengals beat the Chiefs in the AFC championship. Can’t miss this year though! Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! I think they are adorable. Yeah, In a Jam was really good! I definitely highly recommend it! Last year I didn’t watch the Super Bowl because your Bengals beat the Chiefs, lol. Only reason I’m watching is because my superstitious brain thinks I have to watch or they’ll lose for sure. Have a great week!

    • Lisa Mandina

I never used to watch football at all. I barely tolerated it in the background when I’d be at family events and they’d be watching the Chiefs, although I did always support my team. But since we got Patrick Mahomes, it’s been a whole new world and I now have to watch because my superstitious brain thinks they won’t win if I don’t. lol Have a great week!

    • Lisa Mandina

I have a feeling the game will be a lot of heart stopping and edge of my seat like the Chiefs always do! At least I hope it’s like that, at least it means we have a shot at winning if they play like that. I’m hoping I will be able to stay into the story this time with TWD, but we’ll see once I get to that point. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Well, the tour is planned out, I’m just trying to keep myself from getting to antsy about going by doing a little research into each of the places every week. I’m good with the number of snow days we’ve had now. We rarely have to make up if we only have 2 days, so that’s my hope that we’re done! Thanks for stopping by!

    • Lisa Mandina

Have fun at your party! My brother is having a get together for just family at his house, but with being sick I didn’t want to get anyone else sick, so I’m going to stay home. Thanks for visiting!

  2. “putting makeup on each other” lol. They were probably loving doing “science” in the library ha. Yay for snow days. And ooh LAst of Us came out on Friday? I didn’t know that. I’m behind on the episodes…

Yeah, makeup and hair. I was like, really? I mean I’m all for students wanting to come hang out in the library, but they do give me attitude when I ask them to just even sign in. Yeah, I think they did Friday because of the Super Bowl is my guess. Although I remember before I cared about the Super Bowl that I was watching The Walking Dead on tv when the SB was on, so crazy! It’s kind of cool that it’s supposedly taking place in my hometown of KC during these episodes. I guess they filmed here last summer. I don’t remember hearing anything about it. And obviously KC doesn’t look like it does in the show, lol, we aren’t all apocalyptic.

  3. Your puppies are so cute! Enjoy your re-watch TWD. I should finish it one day, I stopped watching after Rick left. That first episode was awesome and when they played half the series in black and white I watched it again, it looks so good that way.
I hope you feel better and enjoy watching the game today. I mainly watch for the commercials and halftime. This year we’re home so we made chili today and have some snacks to munch. We just finished watching the Puppybowl, its so cute lol.

    • Lisa Mandina

I never saw when they did it in black and white! That is cool! I should have bought stuff to make chili since I’m staying home. Oh well. I’m making those little crescent roll hot dog wraps for myself. I’ve got Puppybowl on in the background while I wait for the big game to start! Thanks for visiting!

  4. I am glad your clerk is back. I hope she is feeling 100% again soon. The puppies are adorable! They look so cuddly. I think that’s about the time I stopped watching The Walking Dead too–about the time Rick disappeared. I’ve thought about rewatching it from the beginning and seeing the seasons I’ve missed. Maybe someday. I hope you have a great week!

  5. I’m so glad to hear that your clerk is back and you can get a proper break! I hope you enjoy the Big Game and all the festivities. Have a wonderful week ahead!

    • Lisa Mandina

It was a fun game if you were watching, or fun for food if you weren’t I’m sure! Thanks for stopping by!

  6. We did not watch the Super Bowl. None of us here care anything about American Football. We’re soccer people. So we watch English Premier League, the World Cup, and all the other cups and tournaments. It takes up plenty of our time. 🙂 Your dogs are the cutest! And I’m glad to hear your assistant has been back.

  7. Hope you feel better and that it doesn’t end up being Covid. Sometimes it takes several days before you test positive. I will back to somewhere in Europe at some point. Loved the places I visited but didn’t get to Scotland or Ireland. On my to do list. 🙂

    • Lisa Mandina

Took two tests, both were negative, so pretty sure it wasn’t Covid. I’m feeling mostly better, but the cough won’t quite go away. I’m looking at doing summer school to earn more money for my Scotland trip, just trying to make sure I get to do it, even if it may end up being my only time out of the country again, other than maybe Mexico which is so much cheaper, lol. Thanks for visiting!

  8. Sounds like a busy week. I like the togetherness that the Superbowl seems to bring. We have football here, but it isn’t the big event like the Superbowl! We have had a couple of days of snow at the beginning of the year and we keep getting threatened with it, but I think that we are too far South to actually get it!

I hope you get well soon.

It is exciting for out city and I’m actually enjoying watching on tv the parade we’re having as I blog today!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I have a lot of allergies, and my asthma is worse in the winter, it makes me cough and so I always start freaking out that I’m coming down with something. Hope you don’t get sick!
