Weekly Wrap-Up #105 – February 5th, 2023

Posted February 5, 2023 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 46 Comments

As usual I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

Sunday was the big AFC championship. And we played the same team that we lost to last year. That we’d lost the last three games we’d played them in the past year. So I was nervous about the game. And I was right to be nervous! It was so close! It came down to a mistake by one of the Bengals players at the very end that let the Chiefs get into field goal range and so we beat them by 3 points just like they beat us by 3 points last year. I think both teams played a good game! They’re just pretty evenly matched and it came down to a chance type of score like that again I think.

I’d really rather not even talk about Monday. I was alone again in the library, and it was crazy. Plus my clerk took another Covid test and was positive again, so pretty sure that means another 5 days she’ll be gone. It sucks because I don’t get to close the library to take a lunch. I have to just sit at my desk and try to eat.

Tuesday was not any better. It seemed like every single person, teacher, student, admin, visiting people wanted something from me, and all at the same time. I was so angry at one point with some of the stuff that I didn’t even feel like eating lunch. And believe me, I am ALWAYS able to eat. So to give myself a little laugh for the day, I changed the background screen on my circulation computer at school to this:

Wednesday I had an ultrasound on my liver and gall bladder. The tech said the polyps they found last time were the same size as before, and they also saw some gall stones. But she said if it wasn’t bothering me it probably wasn’t a problem. I’m sure my doctor will have more to say about the results when I meet her later.

Thursday more of the same. My clerk sent me another picture of her positive Covid test Wednesday night. Not like I expected her to show up at all this week at this point. I’m just hoping this doesn’t turn into the almost two months of her being gone like happened at the end of February last year. I’m going to try once again to ask my principal if we can’t get a sub for her if she’s gone that long. Even if it is just someone for parts of the day, like me getting a full half hour lunch break with no one bothering me.

Friday was actually a quiet day in the library. I was able to get a Black History Month display put up.

Then that evening my mom, sted-dad, and I took my niece and nephew to Chuck E. Cheese. My nephew is just like his dad, my brother, he was hamming it up for the camera on this ride the whole time.

Saturday I went with my mom and my aunts to watch Dixie Longate’s show at a local theater. We’ve been to see her every time she’s come to Kansas City in the last 5 years. I missed 2020, and then she didn’t really get back to touring till 2022. This is a commercial for the original shows she did. The last two were more stand up comedy without the actual real tupperware show!

Books Finished

The first one was read for my library committee. The second was an ARC that I read and both reviews were posted this past week.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

Got this ARC in the mail finally from the publisher/PR company. Had thought I would do a review of it last week but didn’t get it by then, so now the review is postponed till later this month.

Audiobooks:

None

Bookish Stuff:

I saw a Vincent van Gogh painting with a woman reading, and as I searched for a post of that I could buy, I came across this book painting by him and bought it instead. For now it is just taped up on the blank wall in front of my desk.

E-galleys:

The first one is for a blog tour later on the 14th I think, and the second one is for the author’s review team, I think I’ll be posting my review on the 21st.

Free E-books:

First was a novella for signing up for the author’s newsletter. Second was also for signing up for an author’s newsletter.

Physical Books:

I bought this back at the beginning of January for the Flirty in Kansas City Convention this month. It just now came in.

What I’m Watching

Keeping up with The Last of Us. Everyone was going on and on about how this past week’s episode had them devastated. And yeah, it was sad, but it’s a zombie/apocalypse type of world. I wasn’t that upset. Although maybe it’s because I read all the people saying that and so I went in prepared to not be that way? Tried starting the second season of Black Summer, but had trouble keeping interest in how it went. Now while I’ve watched one or two episodes of the series Black Mirror, it was only because people told me to. I’ve started going back and just watching the whole thing. And that first episode was WHOA! What I thought was the 4th episode was actually a little interactive movie that I got to make choices on what the characters would do.

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

First is an audiobook I’ve got to hurry to get through to post a review on the 7th I think! The last two are e-galleys for reviews on Wednesday or Thursday and Saturday.

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time! And my latest monthly wrap-up giveaway started on Wednesday. Last month I had over 300 entries so I picked three winners!

Scotland Tour Tidbits

Shopping for plane tickets is still kind of depressing as I continue planning my trip. But I’m not giving up!

So I kind of skipped over the first part of the tour when we get picked up in Edinburgh. We will start with the Royal Mile. I didn’t include it at first because I wasn’t sure exactly what it had to do with the tv show. But I knew I wanted to see it for other reasons. But I guess scenes from the show that were filmed there were Jamie’s print shop and also where Claire met Fergus again after she’d come back through the stones again. First is a picture of the royal mile. The second picture is the building that was used to portray the outside of Jamie’s print shop.

Final Thoughts

How was your week? Did you read or watch anything good? Get any good books? Can you believe it is February already? This week I’ll share a picture of Argyle all snuggled up in the blankets on the couch, just his little grey nose peeking out.

  1. HA Lulu would be happy to snuggle up with the blankets. I washed all her crate pad, blanket and couch blanket yesterday. I’m sorry your clerk is sick so much. Ugh Chuck E Cheese, indoors, noisy, bad pizza. I’m glad that wasn’t my daughter’s favorite place. It’s great to see your Scotland photos. I haven’t shopped plane tickets for a long time but have you tried Kayak? I like the Fenske books, that one anyway.

Actually Chuck E. Cheese hasn’t been busy at all like it used to be before the pandemic. So that’s nice! Yeah, I’ve got a flight tracking set up on Kayak to keep my eye on cheap flights. Still not finding much that’s below $1500.

  2. I hope your ultrasound results are good. I like the Black history month display you set up. I like the show Black Mirror too! Argyle looks so comfy cozy 🙂 Enjoy your books this week! Hopefully your co-worker tests negative soon!

    • Lisa Mandina

Rom-coms are definitely books I can almost always get hooked into! They make me definitely able to take a step away from crazy life. Thanks for visiting!

  3. I’m sorry to hear your co-worker is still testing positive. It makes for very long days when you can’t even take an uninterrupted break. I look forward to your review of Nobody Puts Rom Coms in the Corner. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  4. I hope you’re able to get a sub And I love that background!

Black summer S2 was disappointing, as I recall. Especially after thatintense end to S1! I’m watching LAst Of Us too but missed last week’s episdoe argh. I need to give Black Mirror a try.

Okay, glad to hear that I’m not overreacting to the way I was kind of bored with season 2 of Black Summer. Black Mirror is nice since it is all different episodes that aren’t related. I don’t feel the need to binge it constantly to find out what is happening, lol.

      • No not at all. I thought S2 of Black Summer really got bogged down in places. I was expecting something different. trying to remember… I do think though that the finale to S2 is WILD, if I remember right there’s like a big extended batlle at an airfield and it’s CRAZY.

  5. DANG I don’t see why they can’t allow you to close the library for a mere 30 minutes to eat your dang lunch!!! That’s crazy!

I didn’t know Van Gogh painted books and I love that so much! I see it is called “The Parisian novels” or “The yellow books”. VERY cool!

Yes, I love it! I didn’t know he’d painted anything like that either! So glad to have found it. Yeah, you’d think I could close for lunch. But kids don’t pay attention to the sign. I’d have to actually lock the doors or they’d still walk inside anyway.

  6. Sorry to hear about the chaos at work! It’s never fun when you’re the only one there and everyone needs you at the same time. It reminds me of my job when I was in school. I worked at the bakery department in Schnucks and was always the one to close, since I generally worked after school. But even in those short hours, I would be helping someone with a cake order who had no idea what they were doing and the phone would ring and then I’d be hearing the intercom tell me I had a phone call, followed shortly by someone needing help in the bread aisle that was clear across the store–no clue why they set the store up like that. I went in sometime after I quit, to find that they shifted aisles and the bread aisle was right across from the actual bakery department, so I was like, took them long enough.

I hope they are able to get you some temporary help! Even if it’s just so you can take a lunch break! Those 30 minutes are vital to one’s sanity.

Nice new reads too! Those are all new to me ones but I hope you enjoy them all!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

I did. They were funny, although crazy. Us Chiefs fans are usually sharing those kinds of memes because the refs usually are against us! Not to mention there were times the refs totally took away a touchdown or a good play, so if they were trying to help us, they could have done a better job. lol

  7. Wow! Sorry to hear about your coworker situation – does she have to stay out until she has a negative test? If so, that’s pretty severe. I tested positive for a long time after I was actually better, so that does happen. I hope you can get help if she’s not back this week.

I love your BHM display. Does the school offer programs or is it just an “on your own” thing?

I hope you have a good week. I’ll be cheering for your team in the Super Bowl.

I don’t think she has to stay out until a negative test, but she said she was still feeling really bad. And yeah, they say you can test positive even after you’re no longer contagious, so it’s crazy! She was back today, so that was nice! We have a Black Student Union that does different things during the month. And we have a little quote or tidbit about BHM on the announcements every morning too!

    • Lisa Mandina

It was another game that had my stress levels up and down! I hope we both enjoy that book this week. It’s next for me after I finish my current read.

    • Lisa Mandina

I think he’s pretty sweet, lol. I liked this week’s episode of The Last of Us. So far they’ve all been pretty good, although the first one I wasn’t sure about the end of it. I’m glad I kept going!

  8. I feel for your aide, but even so, that really puts you in a bind. I hope you get the backup you need when she is out! I was pulling for your Chiefs (since my Jags are out of it) – and I’ll be cheering them on next Sunday! 🙂

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, it’s so hard to advocate for myself in that situation because I know she’s gone because she has to be. Glad for all the Chiefs support we can get!

    • Lisa Mandina

Let’s hope I can actually get it all figured out expense wise! I have the money I need in savings, but right now it will take up most of my savings, and I really don’t want to do that! My clerk was back today, so yay!

  9. Sorry your week was hectic. I hope you don’t have to have your gall bladder out. The surgery’s relatively easy, but the recovery is kind of a bear because your body has to get used to functioning without the gall bladder. 3 years later and I still have some issues because I don’t have one. At least the pain in the side is gone, though.

Well, they said since I wasn’t having any pain it wasn’t an issue thankfully. Let’s hope it stays that way!

    • Lisa Mandina

That’s true! I didn’t think about that. Although I would think can’t you take one and close your office door? But yeah, there’s no one to cover you! My clerk is back, although she still is feeling kind of sick. Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Closing your office door is frowned upon especially since teachers would rather students go at lunch than during class time. That was the most frustrating part – the lack of teacher understanding. But eating with a few students in my office worked fine. It allowed me to check in with them and still eat some food.

    • Lisa Mandina

I guess that makes sense! I hate that teachers don’t understand. I was a teacher before I became a librarian, so I try to understand teachers more, but they don’t always reciprocate!

  11. I’m sorry to hear your coworker is out still with COVID. We had three more people call out in my office because of it. I hope your clerk comes back soon or you get that sub. You have so much on your shoulders and hopefully you can get the help you need. I know how these things go though . . . It must be frustrating.

Enjoy your reading and have a great week!

    • Lisa Mandina

She is back this week, although still feeling not quite back to perfect. But it’s understandable with all she has going on.
