Weekly Wrap-Up #101 – January 8th, 2023

Posted January 8, 2023 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 38 Comments

As usual I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

Okay, first week of 2023 down! We started with a KC Chiefs win, but if they keep barely winning like this, I don’t think they’ll make it in the playoffs. Especially when they’re just squeaking by easy teams.

Monday I did some laundry and lamented about having to go back to school on Tuesday. Monday night was a strange evening. After what happened to the Buffalo Bills player who ended up in the hospital, it made it hard to even think about my Chiefs without feeling selfish. As we continue to hear more about his condition, I’m keeping him and his family in my thoughts.

Tuesday was the first day back to school, but no students. My clerk and I got a lot of stuff done, took down holiday displays and put up some new ones.

Wednesday we had students back and our usual early release day. So it was kind of a short and sweet day. I took the last hour off because I had in my mind that I had a doctor appointment at 3:30 that I’d rescheduled from the really bad snowstorm day during Christmas break. I got there at 3:15 to find out that it had actually been at 2:15. Ugh. Fortunately my doctor had a cancellation for Friday, but it was at 10:45, so I had to take a half day on Friday.

Thursday was a busy day in the library, but felt like a mostly normal day.

Friday was a short work day for me because of having to take off for a doctor appointment. The doctor appointment went quickly, but then I took the rest of the day off. I took the dogs to get their nails cut after I went and had lunch. Then I had thought about going to see a movie, but the next one showing was 4 pm, and I wasn’t in the mood to have a bunch of teenagers in the movie because last time how they messed up the experience. So I decided to go Saturday morning instead, assuming they probably wouldn’t go at that time.

Saturday morning I went to the movies, and it was actually a good movie! I then came home and read for a while before it was time to watch my Kansas City Chiefs play the Las Vegas Raiders, one of our big rivalry teams. It was another win for the Chiefs, but things are crazy now with what happened Monday night to Damar Hamlin.

Books Finished

First was an ARC that I got from the publisher and I read and reviewed it this past week. Second was an audiobook I was listening to for a review that I posted this past week as well. Third was an e-galley from Netgalley that I requested, and I reviewed this past week. Fourth was an e-galley I had from the author’s review team, and I read and posted my review on Saturday.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

I used my monthly Audible credit to buy the first book in the Katee Robert series. I’ve listened to the 2nd and read the 3rd, so should probably go back to the 1st! The second audiobook was a last minute tour I signed up for, it just sounded like a fun read/listen!

Bookish Stuff:

My Festivus partner from a couple years ago sent me a box of goodies! Love the stickers and the little tumbler that is referring to the Penny Reid Green Valley world!

E-galleys:

So excited for this one! I signed up for something with a different title, which they said could change, and I’d seen this one just recently somewhere else, so was excited to see this was what I’d be reviewing the second week of February.

Free E-books:

The first one was a monthly freebie from the Steamy Reads Book Club. The second was signing up for an author’s newsletter. The rest were free on Amazon.

Physical Books:

And this was actually purchased before the first of January, because of my book buying ban, but I got it because I’m hoping to see Sierra Simone in February again, and all my other books of hers are signed. I haven’t read this one yet either.

What I’m Watching

Finished up Invasion. As of an article I found from November 2022, it is supposed to have a second season. Whether I’ll still have Apple TV at that time is a whole other story though. Watched the movie The Invitation, because I couldn’t decide what new show to start.

When I was having issues with my YouTube TV, I decided to start Severance. It’s really weird, but interesting enough.

Friday night I decided to stay home and watch a movie, and I watched John Wick, because I’d heard so many people talking about it. It was good, except it was hard watching the part with the dog. But that did make me root him on the rest of the movie. And then I realized one of the actors played Theon GreyJoy? in Game of Thrones.

And then Saturday I went and saw M3GAN. I was worried it would have a lot of cringy parts from what I saw in the previews, but it ended up actually being pretty good!

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

Just this one is for a blog tour review. I also have a bunch of promo posts coming up this week.

Giveaways

Don’t forget that I do now have the nice little box on the right hand sidebar so you can check out giveaways all the time!

  1. What happened to the Bills player Monday was crazy. I don’t watch football all that much but I heard about it and was a little scary to hear. Glad they had so many doctors on the field already! And oh wow! I love your library display of series to read for the New Year! Yay Caraval!! And oooomg I still need to read that The Great Hunt duology! Been meaning to for ages! Though right now I am sort of in event reading mode and anything else kind of gets forgotten. It doesn’t help that I am still debating about a March event in another state entirely either! Lol.

Nice new reads! Lots of new to me ones there! I hope you enjoy them all once you get to read them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

I hate where I have to put displays in my new library, they’re not really in a place that kids for sure walk by or see. But I keep putting them up! I still need to read Caraval! And the second book in The Great Hunt duology. But who knows when/if I’ll get to either! Thanks for stopping by.

    • Lisa Mandina

It actually was pretty good! I had a few things that I found issues with, but it wasn’t cringy like I thought it might be. Thanks for stopping by!

As long as no more dogs die, I think I can watch more! Yeah, I almost am bad and want to watch the new series in an old fashioned way of just one or two a week. I guess I’m just used to that style of tv shows!

  2. I’m glad that you were able to take the dogs to get their nails cut. I remember doing these tasks for my family dogs and it was quite the chore but necessary.

    • Lisa Mandina

I can’t do their nails myself. Next dog I get, if I get another, I’m going to try to start out doing it myself and getting them used to it so I don’t have to pay to do it. These days it’s not even the paying as much as the finding time to go.

    • Lisa Mandina

Oh yeah, I’m sure it was very scary! Just watching on tv was. It’s so good that he’s awake and doing better. So scary and sad for such a young guy!

  3. I hated what happened to Hamlin. That was so awful to see. I couldn’t stop thinking about his family and teammates this week. So glad to hear he’s awake and trending in the right direction 💗 You added some fun books to your pile. The arc of Nobody Puts Romcoms in a Corner looks adorable. I hope you enjoy it! Have a great week!

    • Lisa Mandina

It was a scary thing! And yes, so glad he’s doing better and improving. I’m sure it will be a long time if ever before he plays again though. So scary! Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Enjoy the book goodies, that’s awesome! The school displays look nice, the Muppet poster is cute. I want to watch M3GAN also, it looks good. Enjoy your books this week!

  5. I don’t follow football at all but I heard about Hamlin. I am glad he is doing better and hope he continues to heal. That was very scary. I like the new board decorations and book display you shared! My daughter wishes her break could have lasted longer, but she was back at school last Monday. I’ve heard such great things about Neon Gods. I hope to read that one someday. I hope you have a great week, Lisa.

    • Lisa Mandina

I’ve read the second and third in the Neon Gods series, but need to read the first! Thanks for stopping by!

  6. Watching the Bills game on Monday was just so shocking and unsettling. I’m so glad he has shown improvement over the week. The outpouring of support for that young man has been tremendous. My Jaguars did what most considered impossible and won the AFC South championship last night! From worst record in the AFC to winning the conference. Amazing. I’m nervous about having to (most likely) face the Chiefs, though. I really enjoyed Faking It With #41 (one of your freebies). The whole series was a lot of fun.

Congrats to your Jaguars! Who knows if my Chiefs will win or not. We’re on the edge of our seats every game because they don’t blow the other team out of the water like we’d hope. Can’t wait to get to Faking It With #41. Thanks for visiting!

  7. So far so good in 2023! 🙂 Isn’t it funny too how we go to movies now and think about how busy it’ll be/ who’ll be there lol?

I’m thinking of starting Severance. And Megan looks lke a trip!

I kind of miss what they were doing when they first reopened the movie theaters and when you bought a ticket, they marked off the seats right next to you, behind you and in front of you. I loved having the space, lol. Severance is so unique and weird! M3GAN was also pretty good. Thanks for stopping by!

    • Lisa Mandina

I do always love nods to favorite movies like that! Hoping I really enjoy it like the others I’ve read by the author. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

If they would just watch the movie, like I know I did when I was that age, but they go to socialize and are not really good audiences. Thanks for stopping by!

  8. We watched the KC game on Friday too. Your team was looking good. It’s so sad about Damar Hamlin, but glad to see he’s doing better. I also have Nobody Puts RomComs in the corner. I hope it’s as cute as the title.

  9. I always get my cats nails cut when I take them to the vet. I don’t like doing it myself. One of my cats is a six-toe cat so it hard to get all of her nails cut.
    Have a great week.

    • Lisa Mandina

Oh wow, six toes would be interesting! Yeah, I hope maybe if I get another dog some day I can train it better so I can do it, but for now it’s just easier. I’m so worried I’d cut too far. Thanks for stopping by!

    • Lisa Mandina

I’m usually really good to about appointments! But the past few years I seem to be slipping. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I was shocked. First they started to say it would be a couple weeks with the nurse practitioner, but I decided to ask if there was anything with the doctor open yet and they had just had a cancellation. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Ah! I am slowly getting to the end. I only let myself watch one or two a night. It’s so weird, but also strangely grabs you!

  10. I love your library display! Fun!

Like you, I was so emotional over Hamlin and so thankful he’s recovering so quickly. I am a Patriots fan and playing the Bills on Sunday was so hard… As a division rival, I don’t like the Bills and we needed to win to make the playoffs, but all of the love for Hamlin, I found it hard to cheer against the Bills.

My week went by quickly and I’m starting to get back into routine now that the holidays are over.

    • Lisa Mandina

Thank you! Yeah, it was hard to root against the Bills after that, even though we would have preferred they lost for what helped our standings as well. Hope things are going well for you this week!
