Blurb:

From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds comes a sweepingly ambitious, high-octane tale of power, destiny, love, and redemption.

Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals. They are hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.

Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory after her family was murdered by a rival line. For years she’s pushed away any thought of revenge against the man—now a god—responsible for their deaths.

Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek her out: Castor, a childhood friend Lore believed to be dead, and Athena, one of the last of the original gods, now gravely wounded.

The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and a way to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore’s decision to rejoin the hunt, binding her fate to Athena’s, will come at a deadly cost—and it may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.

My Review

So I’ve wanted to read this for a long time, especially when it became an award nominee in my state where I am a school librarian. So I jumped on the chance to read this as part of the paperback blog tour.

I really loved all the mythology and different aspects of this reimagining of a world where the gods could be killed 7 days every 7 years, and whoever killed them would become the new god. There were a lot of great characters, both good ones, as well as the ones that were the bad guys, or who could actually be trusted even a little to ally for the good. I liked the twists. Because you know someone always is going to have to betray or turn on the main character. I was imagining a different person by the time it happened. But I like how the author even had some things not end up the way we thought they would once that betrayal happened. And there was more than one, even when one betrayal turned out to maybe not be the betrayal it seemed to be.

It was a bit long, and I almost feel like it could have been a duology in a way. I even thought that maybe it was a series or going to be one before I read it and realized it would all be wrapped up as I read the ending.

This was my first book by this author, although I’ve wanted to read her before now. And I think I will keep her past books as well as future titles on my TBR.

About the Author

Yeah, I used to be all about them, loved the Rick Riordan Percy Jackson series. But these days not as much, at least not that long! It was good though.

Yeah, I tried listening to the audiobook, had a bit of trouble getting into it. But when I picked it up to read I enjoyed it!
