Weekly Wrap-Up #87 – October 2nd, 2022

Posted October 2, 2022 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 44 Comments

Yay! It is finally October! We’ve been having some cooler weather, and it also means my birthday is coming up later this month! Plus, I love Halloween, so you can probably tell by my new blog banner. Do you love it? I loved it from the moment Michelle at Lima Bean Designs showed it to me!

Once again I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

A crazy thing that happened that I forgot to share is that my co-librarian from my last job texted me a picture of what their budget is for that library this year. It was a HUGE amount! I mean 6 digits! But, finally someone mentioned how their collection is dated, and so to update it they have to buy a lot of new books. Not to mention all the weeding they are doing now. Which is crazy because I weeded over 2000 books right before I left two years ago. I’m so jealous. I get about $1500 less for my book budget at my new school than I got the years I was at that school. If only I’d stayed there I might be the one getting to spend that money!

Last week started with a bit of a sadness with my Kansas City Chiefs having lost their first game of the season. To a team that got completely shut out last week! 🙁 Oh well. Just football, right? Mowed my yard on a day that was finally fall-like weather. Had the usual Sunday night dinner at my mom’s house for the first time in a few weeks actually.

Monday was a busy day at school. After school I went and played with just one puppy, it was the only one in its litter, and the other litter has all gone to their new homes now. I was supposed to go to see Clerks 3 with my friend after I played with the puppy, but it isn’t in the theaters anymore! 🙁 Here are some puppy pics.

Tuesday I was alone in the library. I also went to an early screening of a movie that evening. I didn’t get home till almost 10 pm, and it left me wondering how in the world I used to get home at almost midnight twice a week and then get up and go work again the next day back when I worked at Barnes & Noble and we were still open till 11 pm.

Wednesday my library clerk was back. It was a kind of busy day. I just went home after school and hung out with the dogs and watched tv and read. And I might have decided to rejoin Book of the Month club.

Thursday one of the new English teachers came in with his class to talk about genres and let them pick their own books to read. I didn’t do a lot, but I did pick out 5 books in each of the 5 genres he wanted them to look at. They’ll come back on Friday to check out a specific book that they want.

Friday was a busy day again. Although I do have all the fiction out of boxes in my library now. Yay! I had scheduled a oil change and tire rotation about an hour after I get to leave school. So I had to rush home and let the dogs out and feed them and then I quickly put them back in their kennel and drove up to the dealer. I got a letter from the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program and I’m not sure if I’ll qualify at all for that, which sucks. They make it so difficult so most people will just give up and not try to get it. Because that’s about where I am at this point.

Saturday was a lovely sleep in day. I did some blogging, and mostly just hung out around the house with the dogs other than some odds and ends shopping I needed to do. I really want a new desk and to re-do some of my bookshelves, but I’m trying to wait and not spend a bunch of money right off the bat with the money I got from refinancing. Oh yeah, I also worked on doing some adding to my blog. I’ve got a new box on the sidebar now that will list all my giveaways thanks to the Ultimate Book Blogger plug-in. I’m just trying to figure out how to set up a Giveaway page now. Also I’ve gotten a bit behind again, so I’m being kind of cutthroat with my DNFs on ARCs that aren’t ones I specifically requested.

Books Finished

I loved the final book in Erin Mallon’s Natural History series. I read the e-galley and posted the review on Wednesday. The Book Boyfriend was for a blog tour review on Thursday. Originally I was just going to do a promo post, didn’t think I could fit it in, but I’m glad I did! Third was an audiobook that is one of the books on the library award committee list that I am supposed to read before January. Fourth was for the SmartyPants Romance launch. My official blog review will be posted as part of the tour on October 12th.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

Used my monthly credit with Audible to get this one after seeing all the rave reviews!

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

Just got the first one this week for a review coming up on Tuesday. The other two are for Smarty Pants Romance reviews in October as well. The last one is for the author’s review team, can’t wait to read this one! Although it doesn’t come out for a bit.

Free E-books:

The first three were free on Amazon. The last three were free on Book Funnel, or for signing up for an author’s newsletter.

Physical Books:

I bought these as soon as I had the refi money in my bank account. Of course my first purchase was books, lol. My first order got canceled though because of damage or something? So instead of just replacing and resending, I had to go through completely reordering them from Amazon. Weirdness. I’ve read the second two. Actually owned the middle one already, but I’m loving the new covers they’re putting on all of CoHo’s books. The last one is the new covers that they’re doing for Helena Hunting’s Pucked books. I didn’t own this one in the series yet, so I bought it. I’m tempted to buy the first book too, since I already have both a paperback and hardcover version of that one. Maybe I’ll collect all the versions of it? lol

So Bunnicula was one of my favorite books as a kid. I even made a puppet of the title character for a book report! And when the author visited the district where I was teaching at one point, I brought my books and the puppet in to show the author. So when I saw this graphic novel at Target, I had to buy it!

What I’m Watching

Same series back on this week, The Amazing Race and Survivor. But it was also the first week of the new seasons of Young Sheldon and Ghosts. I also went to see an early screening of a new horror movie, Smile. It was definitely creepy. There were some people in the theater that I think were maybe drunk or high, and they would laugh at places that really kind of messed up the mood at times.

There was a new show on Thursday night called So Help Me Todd. I wasn’t planning to watch it. But it came on right after Ghosts and I saw that Skylar Astin was in it, who I loved from his role in the Pitch Perfect movies. So I kept watching and kind of liked it. It’s an hour long, but I’m going to continue giving it a try.

Coming Up Next Week on My Blog

Now, the first one may end up being a DNF as I’ve tried Rin Chupeco twice and DNFed both times. But this one sounds good too! So it may be a toss up between which of the first two ARCs pictured that I actually read. The third and fourth are for blog tour reviews on Tuesday and Thursday. Last is an ARC I hope ot read by the weekend.

There is also a promo post this week to for a book called Mistletoe Mixtape. I wanted to read it, but as you can see I had no time to add it into my reviews for this week.

Giveaways

I’ll now have these listed in a box on my sidebar too!

Final Thoughts

  1. Love those dog statues, I had to look at them twice to understand what I was seeing. Yeah, a lot of people are putting up Halloween decorations and its quite fun.

lol, yeah, I liked them for the background! I love how none of the dogs seem to even think they are real dogs though.

Yes!! Finally October! Your blog header is ADORABLE and I need it in my life. This Poison Heart is on my TBR, but I feel like I’ll never get to it with the other 150000 on my TBR. Anyway! I want to see Smile so bad, we went to see Beast with my kiddo and he saw a preview for Smile and had nightmares for a week, just from the preview!
Happy early birthday in case I miss it! Hope October is great!

Yeah, I wouldn’t have gotten to it yet except I needed to fit it in for a committee I’m on. Hope you’re able to get to it soon. Oh the preview for Smile is definitely creepy! And it has some definitely creepy bits in the movie! Thanks for stopping by!

    • Lisa Mandina

Were you able to get them forgiven? I’m planning to spend my Monday after I get home from work on the phone as long as it takes to figure out what is going on with it!

  3. Oh my gosh your new header is AWESOME. And yay for October! Love this time of year…

That is wild about your old school’s budget. Wow…

Books are always a good first purchase! 🙂

Thank you! I love it so much! I mean, hey, you can’t go wrong with buying books, right? lol Thanks for visiting!

Thanks! I love Michelle’s work so much! I want to commission a new banner for every month! Yeah, the nights are definitely fall-like here, but the days have still been getting into the 80s. Hopefully by the end of the week it is going to get cooler and stay!

    • Lisa Mandina

I’ve loved the narrator on the Penny Reid books she does so I’m sure I’ll love it here too! Thanks for visiting!

  4. I love those puppy pictures, what a cutie. I am watching the KC Chiefs right now and they just got a touchdown! :). I hope they do well again this year. My sister also recommended So Help Me Todd, I think I’ll have to watch it. I hope you enjoy Thank You for Listening. I really enjoyed it.

Last night’s Chiefs game was so exciting! I went to bed at the end of the 3rd quarter, but had to check my phone for the final score when the dogs woke me up later that night. Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yes, Maybe Someday was one of my first CoHo books. All the redone covers are so cool looking I want to order them all! lol

    • Lisa Mandina

It was a very cute show. I’m hoping it keeps up the quality of the first one, maybe even gets a little better. Thanks for visiting!

  5. Puppies! Puppies are so cute. I kind of lost my train of thought on what I was going to comment once I saw them. I think it was that I LOVE your Halloween inspired header. So cool! You also read some great books. I loved Worth the Wait. And I’m looking forward to 3 of those ARCs you received.

  6. I love the new blog look and your doggie pics are so cute. I don’t envy your former colleague having to update and restock their school library – I’d find it far too overwhelming and worry about whether I was picking good books or not.

    • Lisa Mandina

I would have so much fun updating! Shopping for books and choosing and deciding what is best is my favorite part of the job. Plus I was there 8 years and got to know the collection pretty well, and the teachers and classes and students, so I think I would have done a great job. Sadly, I don’t get to. Oh well! 🙂

    • Lisa Mandina

Happy early birthday to you as well! Oh wow, that would be creepy to be in some real place and see someone smiling like that!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, my last district definitely took care of book budgets and was very supportive of our libraries district wide, even if building principals weren’t always as supportive. Yes, puppies do make everything better, it’s why I’m so glad to have a friend who has puppies for me to visit!

  7. Sorry to hear about the Chiefs loss. My Jaguars lost on Sunday – and to a team that hasn’t won a game all season. So happy we could help them with that. lol I nabbed that Fall Into You anthology, too. Mainly for the Catherine Cowles story that introduces a character from her upcoming series. I’m so hooked on her. Hope you’re having a great week!
