Weekly Wrap-Up #80 – August 14th, 2022

Once again I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

First of all, do you love my new banner? I kept seeing all the cool banner changes that Anne oveer at Books of My Heart did this summer, and I decided I wanted to get a few themed/seasonal banners made by Michelle at Limabean Designs, especially since I loved the new one she made for me earlier this year. And she sent me this one and it is perfect! I’m also going to have her do a Halloween one, and later this year a Christmas one I think. Maybe next year I’ll have her make one for Valentine’s Day or summer or something. But isn’t this gorgeous! I had her do this kind of as a back to school theme, featuring me in a library, since I’m back to my school library!

Monday I had to work registration, different than my usual hours. I didn’t have to go in until 11 am instead of my normal 7 am. Which was nice for sleeping in. But because it wasn’t my normal work day I didn’t get to work in my library, plus registration was in the library so I wouldn’t have been able to do much anyway. I went over to my friend’s house after work, so around 7:15 and let her practice present a conference presentation she is doing in a couple weeks. I didn’t leave her house till 8:30 and so was really tired. It also turns out we found out that my step-dad’s prostate cancer that he had beat back in 2020 is back and may have spread. So Monday was a really hard day for me.

Tuesday morning it was so hard to get up, but I had to go to work at the normal time, even though it was for another registration day. I did find a few boxes of books that I could actually put out, so that was nice. Learned that I have to get something different to hang posters on the newly painted walls because they wouldn’t stay up.

Wednesday all the teachers were back and the morning was filled with a big staff meeting. With a couple lovely “ice breaker” type of activities where we all had to get up and talk to each other. Lunch was provided by our admin from a local Italian restaurant. Then in the afternoon we had time to work in our classrooms. I got some boxes unpacked, a few anyway, and a few moved closer to where they will go when I get to that point in the Dewey Decimal system. In the evening I went to a celebration of life gathering for my stepmom’s mother. She had considered me one of her grandkids ever since my dad married my stepmom. She was 89 years old.

Thursday was the district Convocation, but we were told that if we didn’t want to go, we could stay and work in our classrooms, or in my case my library. So I got a bunch of boxes moved in the morning. The afternoon was more meetings, and another hour or so of work time after that. I had to mow my lawn because it was past due time, and so by the time I was done with that I had over 14,000 steps on my Fitbit for the day.

Friday we had meetings for a short time in the morning, then time to work in our classroom/library. In the afternoon we had district meetings, so I went to meet with the new high school librarian at the other high school in our district. She is brand new, was an English teacher before. She doesn’t have a library degree, but took the test to qualify for certification. However our state just changed it back to what it was when I got my master’s over 10 years ago that you have to have a library degree or else if you have a teaching degree then you have to have a library master’s degree. So she is trying to figure out what to do to make sure she can get certified. My personal opinion is that they should require the degree because there are a lot of people wanting to be librarians but not so many openings, and it should be the ones dedicated to that career enough to get the degree. Obviously in an area where there aren’t a ton of candidates for the job, that isn’t necessary. But I know there are a lot of people trying to get library jobs who get their degrees, but then lose out on the job like in this case. The library clerk at that school was working on her master’s and applied for the job, but did not get it. They’d expected her to stay and help this new person. So of course she quit and I think got a library job somewhere else I hope! Nothing against the new person, she’s nice and I know she is going to do her best. Just as I dealt with not getting the job at the middle school where I’d worked when they gave it to someone like this situation, it’s hard not to feel a little frustrated.

I’m actually considering even applying for a law library job at a local college law library. I have a friend who was a librarian with me in my last district who went on to do that, and then she went to law school! I reached out to her to ask if she thought I could do that law library job, and she actually talked to the person in charge and they told her to tell me to apply. But, as I’ve mentioned before, I would have to pay a huge chunk of money to get out of my contract. I may still apply just to see if they’d hire me or if I’d be even interested after an interview. A law library would take me away from the YA books I love though.

Oh, and my stupid Vizio tv Smartcast keeps not working. So I gave in and put the Chromecast thing on that tv that I got when Google Fiber got rid of their tv service so they sent those out.

Saturday I was so happy to get to sleep in! It was heavenly! I had originally bought tickets to go see Where the Crawdads Sing at 10 am, but I canceled those and went at 1 pm instead.

Books Finished

The first one was for a blog tour review on Tuesday. The second one was also for a blog tour review on Tuesday. I was late getting them up because of how late I worked Monday night and how that whole day went. The third one I posted a review for yesterday. It was a big book, almost 500 pages, similar to the first one, so it took me longer to read than planned. Partly because of all kinds of other issues this week!

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

Sadly I didn’t get a copy of this one before it came out like I’d hoped. However someone was trading, and they were willing to accept off their Amazon wishlist for this since I didn’t have anything they wanted. Which I need to quit doing that and just buy the actual finished copies for myself at this point I guess. But I like matching ARCs for my shelf! Don’t know when I’ll get around to reading this.

Audiobooks:

None

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

This is for a blog tour review later this month.

Free E-books:

The first one was for signing up for an author’s newsletter. The rest were free on Amazon.

Physical books:

What I’m Watching

Still watching all the same series that are either one episode a week or that I’m binging. But one of my favorite shows, Never Have I Ever was back on Friday and I binged the first three episodes Friday night and of course was crying at the end of the third one, tears streaming down my face and I didn’t even realize it at first!

Saturday I went and saw Where the Crawdads Sing, which I hadn’t read the book yet, but I really liked it! Highly recommend!

  1. Ooh that banner is nice! I thought something looked different when I started to scroll down. Lol. I love the library theme and think it’s perfect for this time of year! Or any time of year really! But I love the idea of seasonal ones. I keep thinking of reaching out to someone to update my look for me as well. It’s kind of on the back burner for the moment as I debate it over. Lol.

Nice new reads! Those are all new to me ones but I hope you will enjoy each and every one of them!

    Here’s my StS

    Have a GREAT day!

I highly recommend Limabean Designs! She is so awesome, let me really ask to change little things, on my main header when I switched earlier this year that is. And the price was so reasonable I paid her more than she asked because I loved it so much and I know how much time she put into it! This one she sent me and I loved it so much I didn’t ask for any changes! Thanks for visiting!

  2. I’m glad you got to so much this week and those district meetings in the schools remind me of my earlier school days. School is really approaching fast this year.

The back to school meetings are actually making me wish I’d tried harder for some of the college library positions I saw open this summer. Some things about schools are getting to be ridiculous in my opinion and I’m wondering if I can keep going with this. We’ve still got one more week before all the kids are back though! Seems like we have too long of meetings. Thanks for stopping by!

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! Yeah, I think it would be interesting to at least try. Especially how much I’ve been dreading my current job more and more each day as back to school with students gets closer.

    • Lisa Mandina

It is so great! I highly recommend Limabean Designs to anyone wanting to do any kind of graphics for their blog.

  3. Cool banner! Michelle does nice work. That does sound frustrating about the library positions. Even if someone is great and would otherwise work out fine it’s hard not to want someone who’s actually earned the degree get the job. I can totally see why that person quit and left.

And good luck with the law library job if you apply for it!

Thanks! I’m loving the banner every time I go to my blog page, lol. We’ll see what happens with the library job!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, the beginning of the school year is always busy, but this year seems extra busy! Thanks for visiting!

  4. I love your new banner! Michelle at Limabean Designs does good work.

Hope your new school year goes well! And good luck as you make the decision whether to stay where you are or go for the law library job. I’m sure there are benefits and drawbacks to both choices, so I hope whichever you choose turns out to be the right choice for you.

Yeah, there are so many things to think about with possibly breaking a contract at this point that I may not even try. I am just afraid this year won’t be better than last year. I think some things will be better, but I think there might be some things that are worse. We’ll see! Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks! I am loving it too! The doctor says it is treatable and not to get really worried yet. So fingers crossed he’ll be able to fight it again this time. Thanks for visiting!

  5. I love your new banner! I have been thinking about watching Never Have I Ever, now that I know it’s good, I’ll go give it a try. I want to watch Where the Crawdads Sing, but am waiting to see if it will come to streaming first. I’ve never been a fan of movie theaters. Have a great week, Lisa!

Never Have I Ever is such a good show! I’m sure the movie will come to streaming at some point I would think. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I love your new banner. It’s very eye catching and so cute! I hope things get better at work and with your step dad. Have a wonderful week with lots of great reads ❤️

    • Lisa Mandina

I guess there’s always that kind of a situation in every workplace, but it hits home for me because of the times I dealt with a similar issue. Thanks for visiting!

  7. Ah I love the new banner and thanks for the shout out and for Michelle. I am still on my Sunday visiting on Tuesday so that is how behind I am this week! I agree about the library job requirements and I hate that where people get the jobs like that over ones with experience and working towards the degree.
