Weekly Wrap-Up #71 – June 12th, 2022

Posted June 12, 2022 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 49 Comments

Once again I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer) and with Stacking the Shelves (hosted by Reading Reality).

Monday was my last day of work for this school year. It was really another day of just sitting in my office and kind of playing around on my computer. I did get in the mail my autograph book I made on Shutterfly for Book Bonanza next month, as well as some personalized post-it notes I plan to use in the books I want signed.

Tuesday they came in the morning to start remodeling my bathroom. Here are some before pictures I took. Now I’m not changing the toilet or the two cabinets or light fixture, so those will be the same. But the tub, flooring, and vanity are all changing.

I spent most of the day running errands and then going to sit at the library to do some blogging. Here is what it looked like after the first day of work.

The guy was there till after 7. I went home around 4 pm, because I thought he’d be done by around 6-6:30. While I was waiting on him, I finally put together a dog bed I’d bought several months ago. But by 7 I had to go to the bathroom, so I drove over to my mom’s house, used hers, then we went and had some cheesecake tacos from my cousin’s stepdaughter’s bakery food truck. Here’s a picture of my cheesecake taco with Oreo topping, and a picture of the new dog bed too!

Then we had some bad storms late Tuesday night, actually early Wednesday morning. A couple possible tornadoes. I heard the siren barely about 1:15 am. So I turned on the tv to see what they were saying. I had to leave my car out in the driveway because the remodelers left stuff in my garage, so I was worried about hail, but I lucked out. I was kind of in the middle of where the storms were. There was one that was 20 or so miles north that had possible tornado, as well as one close to the high school where I work, about 25 miles south/east of me. It was mostly over by 2 am but now I have some branches down in my yard after the guy came and cleaned up the ones I’d had there for the last year thanks to those storms. Oh well, they’re not as big as those were.

I spent the day Wednesday at the library, well a little bit at Panera first, until I realized how many people that didn’t have power were coming there to work so I gave up my spot since I’m not really working. At the end of the day, the renovation guy said that he was behind and he’d have to talk to someone tomorrow because he wasn’t coming on Friday. Even though I’d been told since they couldn’t come Monday, and originally it was Monday through Thursday, they’d be coming Tuesday through Friday. So I was curious to see what he said on Thursday morning. Here is what the bathroom looked like at the end of the day Wednesday, with one of my dogs checking it out.

Thursday morning, the renovation guy didn’t seem to know anything new yet before I left for the morning. I went to my parents house to finally take a shower since mine was in the renovation process. I decided to sit at their kitchen table and do my blogging after the shower, instead of going to the library. And so I was there to see a leak from under the upstairs bathroom where I showered. No one really uses that upstairs bathroom in their house, so it was a bit of a surprise when we noticed water on the floor. As my stepdad was cleaning up the water on the floor, he got dripped on and we realized it was coming from the ceiling. When I got home from running around all day, I found out that the current renovation guy actually had vacation this weekend, so there was a different guy that was going to come on Friday. But the first guy got a ton of stuff done! This is almost complete, but what was done on Thursday night.

Friday was kind of the first day that actually felt like my summer break because I got to sleep in and get up when I was ready! The new guy wasn’t scheduled to come until 10:30 am. When he got there, he told me he only had about 3 hours of work. Before he got there though, I’d been sitting at my desk paying bills, and saw a deer come running out and across the street to the empty lot where the house had burned down about a year ago. Later as I was still sitting there, it came back out and it seemed to go in between my house and the neighbor. I assume it went into their yard or down the street out of my line of sight. I have a taller wood fence, so it would have had to be running to jump over it I think. Here is a picture of my finished bathroom before I started getting all the stuff put back in like my shower curtain and rug, etc. The mirror cabinet is not changed, it wasn’t something I was worried about, but I have a nice deep tub and a vanity with a small drawer on top, I wanted a drawer really bad! And the floor is still linoleum, but it looks much nicer than what I had before.

Saturday I got to sleep in, it was lovely! Then I went to a noon showing of Jurassic World with my mom. I really enjoyed it. Now I know there was a lot of talk that it wasn’t that good, but this post I found on Facebook sums up my feelings on that.

After the movie I went and got a new bathroom rug because the one I had didn’t make it through the wash this time. But I found one exactly like what I had before. I did notice that the vanity sink is leaking underneath, so I may have the people come back out and look at it. I’m afraid to mess with it and mess it up before I have them look at it. Here is a picture of my bathroom with the shower curtain put back up and the rug. You can’t tell from the pictures very well, but the flooring I picked goes perfectly with the colors I already have in my bathroom and I love it!

Books finished

The first one I didn’t finish till last Sunday, but I posted the review so it shows up as for last Saturday, not yesterday. The last four were all reviewed this past week.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

None

Audiobooks:

So the author was giving out codes for some audiobooks, and I’d read most of them, except this one. But then I realized this is technically the second in the series and I haven’t read the first one Shopping for a Turkey yet, so I am not sure if I can listen to this one right away. But then I asked that in the author’s Facebook group, and she sent me an audio code for the first book in the series! lol So that is this:

Bookish Stuff:

Here’s a picture of the front of my autograph book plus my little post-it notes. Also inside you can see my table of contents and a couple of author pages! I make this book to take so that I don’t have to carry a ton of books around. Not that I don’t end up buying books anyway, lol.

Now I also bought some other non-bookish things, or one of them is kinda bookish since Jurassic Park was a book that I read and loved in the 90s way before it became a movie.

I also got a pillow case that I just have to go buy a pillow to put in, but it has images that look like my two dogs with their names on it.

E-galleys:

I’m so excited to get Mansplainer. It’s pub date has been put off a few months, and I’d reached out to the publisher and also kept checking Netgalley. Because for some reason I didn’t get signed up for the series blog tour with whichever blog tour group had it. So when the publisher reached out and had a Netgalley link for me this week, I was so excited! I mean I’d even put it on my calendar to make sure I had time to read it if I was lucky enough to get a copy. So Yay!

Free E-books:

There were two freebies for Aleatha Romig on Amazon, I downloaded both, then realized I already had Red Sin from probably an author newsletter freebie. Oh well. Also the Sex and Candy was fro an author’s newsletter. Okay, so I really enjoy Rich Amooi, and when I saw a book by him was free, I immediately downloaded it. Then when I went to add it on Goodreads, I realized that I’d already read this one, but under a different title, Uncork My Love, and I actually kind of like that cover better too, compared to the new one up above. I mean I like the cartoonish, or illustrated covers like this better, but I also like a little background if possible, like in the one below. The blank background isn’t as neat.

Physical books:

So I ordered this one as soon as the author publicized it, and I finished up the second or companion book to this one this week and immediately ordered it’s illustrated copy. I’ve got some awesome scenes from the second one that I hope to see illustrated. Here is the cover and a picture of one of the illustrations in the book.

I also checked out a TON of books from the library to get ready for being on my state library association’s committee. I won’t share them all here, because I went overboard and put holds on a bunch that I didn’t think I’d get right away and I did. There are 52 books on the list I think. I tried to reach out to some people who had ARCs listed on Twitter under the #booksfortrade, but no one really wanted to trade what they had for what I had. I even offered to buy a full priced book of a wishlist, and pay for shipping for the books, but they wanted me to buy one full priced book for each of the ARCs and if I’m doing that, I’d just go buy the finished copies. Actually my dealings on Twitter lately with the whole trade thing has given me an idea for a discussin post that I may do later this month or next month.

What I’m Watching

I finished up the first part of this season of Stranger Things. It had a bit of a cliffhanger, but knowing that July 1st is when the next part will come out, I’m not too upset waiting. I had a ton to read this week for reviews since I almost had myself booked one review a day and I had to still read all of them! So not a ton of time for watching things. I also finally finished watching the last episode of The Underground Railroad. I have issues with how they filmed it. There are a lot of scenes that are really long with not much happening. Like a person standing and staring around. I think maybe I need to read the book by Colson Whitehead to really get and understand some things for this story. I tried again to get into the 3rd season of Driven, but it’s just not keeping my attention. So then I started watching Prehistoric Planet again. I also remembered about the Blumhouse movies on Amazon Prime, and watched one of those called The Manor. It was okay.

I would have gone to see Jurassic World on either Thursday or Friday by myself, but my mom wanted to go and she promised to go see it on opening weekend, so we went to see it on Saturday at what they call the Extreme Theme at B&B Theaters. And I really enjoyed it!

  1. I hope the leak under the vanity is easy to sort (and completed quickly). The room looks stunning, I love the flooring you’ve put in.
I don’t know if anywhere in the UK does cheesecake tacos but it feels like something I need in my life! Happy reading.

I hope so too! It seems to be a little less today but who knows! I’ve never heard of the cheesecake tacos till I saw them at this food truck. Thanks for visiting!

  2. That cheesecake taco looks and sounds delicious. Good luck with your bathroom remodel. Are you going to paint any of the cabinetry? I look forward to seeing what it looks like after.

I’m done with the remodel for now, should have the final picture in the post. I may either paint the cabinets or replace them. Although the more I look at the picture, I almost like the contrast. Can’t decide! Lol Thanks for stopping by!

    • Lisa Mandina

Four days was all it took! Of course they were only doing the tub and the floor, and then putting in a vanity I bought. No painting or anything else. And the price was below what I was hoping to pay, and way less than all the other bids I got for it. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I always enjoy movies others don’t like. I watch to be entertained I am not into al the cinematography, CGI stuff, just is it fast paced and full of action and in this case lots of dinos…lol. 🙂 I need that funko pop…lol.

Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier!

Same, I think maybe I’m more easily entertained, lol. I had to order the Funko pop, couldn’t seem to find it at any stores. Thanks for returning the visit!

    • Lisa Mandina

Hope they enjoy it as much as I did! The cheesecake taco had a cinnamon fried shell, it was delicious, but I do love a good cannoli!

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! Can’t wait to get started listening to them. And while I’m so happy for my summer break, and not to have to pay gas for driving to work every day, I do miss the the time I spend listening to audiobooks in the car.

    • Lisa Mandina

I’m not normally a big purple person, but I saw this shower curtain and loved it, so the rest of the color in the bathroom came from that. Thanks for visiting!

  4. Wow the bathroom looks nice! Love the flooring. And ooh Jurassic World- I keep forgetting about that. Those JP Funkos look awesome. I may need some of those. 🙂

I thought stranger Things ended pretty good, it got better as it went.

  5. Wow what a week! Your bathroom looks great. Those storms sound scary – we don’t really have big storms here in the UK (if we do have any they are often at night and I sleep through them. I’m 32 years old so wasn’t around for the big storm in the 80s 🤣) so I can’t imagine what they are like!

A good looking book haul. I also want to see the new Jurassic Park but with a 3 year old I might not get to see it for a few years yet!

Have a great week next week

Yeah, I kind of enjoy a good storm. I was a science teacher, and always thought it would be fun to storm chase! Other than the wind and stuff with the first storm, we didn’t get much at my house with these two storms luckily. Yeah, 3 years is a little young probably! Thanks for stopping by!

  6. Your workers did a great job, and finished up really quickly, despite water and rain, etc. Enjoy!

Now you can read, sleep in, and take some time to do new things. Thanks for sharing.

    • Lisa Mandina

They were only working during the day, and fortunately the rain and storms were only in the evenings, early morning. Forgot I have Jury Duty this week, so only one day to sleep in so far! Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

I’ve done that type of book since I went to Apollycon a while back and saw someone else had done it. They are perfect for not having to carry a ton of books around. Although I have some anthologies I want to get signed this year and I always end up buying something, lol. Thanks for stopping by!

    • Lisa Mandina

My leak seems to be gone. I wonder if the seals just needed a bit of time to finish up? My parents think their leak is behind the shower wall, so they are debating about just tearing out the tub they have to get it fixed and putting in a new one.

    • Lisa Mandina

I don’t know that it’s talented, just all copying pictures into the Shutterfly site and arranging them. lol

    • Lisa Mandina

Me too! I wanted laminate, but that’s so expensive, and this is just linoleum, but it’s really nice!

  7. Okay, I don’t even have a sweet tooth but that cheesecake taco looks divine. How awesome to have the bathroom reno done! It looks great and I love the flooring. And the shower curtain is so pretty!

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! I got the shower curtain when I first moved into the house and have kept my painting and decorating of the bathroom to match it.

  8. Oh wow! The bathroom looks really nice! Nice and fresh, clean look! Glad you didn’t get hit too bad with the storms. Those must have missed our area, as we haven’t seen rain in awhile. I’d rather it all be hot and gross than deal with storms. I hate those! Lol. The autograph book you made is super cool! It’s really pretty and pretty smart to make too!

Nice new reads as well! All new to me ones but I hope you will enjoy them all!

Thanks for visiting my StS the other day!

    Have a GREAT day!

    Old Follower 🙂

    • Lisa Mandina

The second storm didn’t dump much rain here, but the first one was enough that there was water in my drainage ditch at the front of my yard. The autograph book is good, I bring less books that way, but it doesn’t keep me from buying more, lol.

  9. Your new bathroom looks lovely – I really like the new mat and shower curtain:)). I hope you are able to take plenty of time to put your feet up and tuck into those new books of yours in the coming week!

    • Lisa Mandina

I don’t know why but I keep waiting to take a bath in it. Need to do that and enjoy it soon! Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Your bathroom is beautiful! I love the floors.

My husband and I have not seen the new Jurassic Park yet but we went to a museum with lots of dinosaur bones over the weekend. When we got home, we watched the original again. It’s such a good movie!

    Enjoy your week!

    • Lisa Mandina

I love dinosaur museums! And the new one has a lot of little references to the first movie which are fun to pick out!

  11. Cheesecake tacos sound like something I need in my life. And I love the Jurassic Park meme…we definitely don’t care. And to have the original cast – although no JP movie will ever be better than the first. (I just can’t with the idea of a ‘raptor whisperer’, and also Chris Pratt is a douchenozzle, but that’s a whole different subject!)

    Happy Summer!

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, the whole raptor whisperer thing is kinda weird. I thought they made fun of it in the new movie too. Thanks for visiting!
