Weekly Wrap-Up #62 – April 10th, 2022

Posted April 10, 2022 by Lisa Mandina in Weekly Wrap Up / 26 Comments

Once again I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer) and with Stacking the Shelves (hosted by Reading Reality).

So today I am at the Missouri Association of School Librarians conference, yay! But first let’s talk about the rest of the past week.

Monday was alone in the library for me again. We got a new full time sub in the building, and since they weren’t needed anywhere else, I was able to use her to help me with the books I am discarding. I also realized the book I was supposed to post a review for on Tuesday was over 500 pages long, and I’d only started on Sunday! While the author is one I can read quickly, with being back to the real world this week, that was a hard one!

Tuesday, alone again, and there were enough teachers gone that they had to pull the sub who’d been helping me out to a classroom. Oh well. I was pretty busy with lots of classes in the library, not for library stuff, but other things, and some checking out books, so it’s not like I would have used her. I finished the over 500 page book that I started and it was really good. I took my car to get the oil change, and had to deal with the stupid maintenance plan I purchased at the dealership where I bought it. The problem is that dealership is over 45 minutes away from where I live. I can use it at the closer dealership, but it’s a hassle. And the guy didn’t put the info in my account last time, so I had to call and get it again.

Wednesday, alone again. While there were fewer classes in the library today, there were enough different things going on constantly, not necessarily library related, that I was running around all day busy. I did get a few things done though. After school, a former co-worker at Barnes & Noble and her daughter came over to see my dogs. I decided to have her daughter watch them while I am at my conference this weekend so they could stay home.

Alone again on Thursday of course. But it was another busy day in my library. I got a lot of things done though. I worked some more on doing some relabeling in my graphic novel section so all the comics were together, like even though the Superman comics may have different authors, I sorted them by title.

Friday, hopefully my last day alone? We’ll see if my assistant is able to come back next week. Hopefully she’ll at least be there Monday and Tuesday while I’m at my conference. Thursday we got the final new books for the year. I got them out of the box and mostly ready to put out on the shelves on Friday. But it was another crazy busy day! I’m also working on a National Poetry Month display and have asked teachers to send me their favorite poems to add to it. I’ll take a picture next week after I get a few more poems up there hopefully.

Saturday was the drive to the Lake of the Ozarks where the conference is. The drive from Kansas City down was a memory filled trip. I taught at a high school down that way my first two years of teaching, so I drove that long drive about every other weekend to go home and visit my parents. The convention center resort used to be called Tan-Tar-A, but I think in the last year or two they switched to Margaritaville. I lucked out and got a room in the main building, and on the side with a lake view balcony!

So I’m finishing up this post as I sit and stare out at the nice view and excited for tomorrow! The actual events don’t start till like 1:15 pm, so I don’t have to get up early tomorrow, yay! I guess I could have driven down on Sunday morning, but I am glad to be here and settled in the night before. I did go down to the little bar and grill in the main lobby for dinner. There was one table there full of some extremely loud women, but I had my book and read.

Books Finished

The first one was for a book blog tour at the beginning of the week. The second one was the over 500 page book that I had to read and I posted my review as part of the author review team on Wednesday. The third one I have reviewed, but it won’t post on my blog till later this month.

New Additions to My Library

ARCs:

I’m a huge fan of Tessa Gratton, particularly her YA books. I guess there is a first one that goes with this one as a companion book, that I didn’t know about and didn’t get read. But the publisher reached out and said I could read this without having read the first, so I jumped on it!

Audiobooks:

Okay, I ended up using my April Audible credit on this one. Between Tammy at Books, Bones & Buffy blog review, and then Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer‘s audiobook review saying that Wil Wheaton was the narrator, I gave in and decided to finally grab a John Scalzi book finally. I love Wil Wheaton’s narration of the Ready Player One books, so figured I’d enjoy this too. The second and third are free on Authors Direct app.

Bookish Stuff:

None

E-galleys:

As part of the author’s review team I got the new Monica Murphy book for a blog tour review on the 19th I think. The second book is another SmartyPants Romance book I’ll be reading for a review soon! And the last one is for a review this next week!

Free E-books:

The first three were free on Amazon. The last one was from an author’s newsletter.

Physical Books:

So I ordered a copy of Gouda Friends, because I had to have its cheesy cuteness on my bookshelf. The first one that came had some kind of dirty on the pages. So I emailed and asked to exchange for another. They told me to keep the first one and sent me a new copy. I guess maybe I can give the dirty one away? I’ll try to clean it at my library like I would a library book first though. Can’t wait to meet this author at Book Bonanza this summer and get it signed!

What I’m Watching

Finished Bridgerton. I enjoyed it, but not as much as season one. And since I haven’t read the books yet, I’m sad that Pen and Colin’s book won’t be the next season, I guess that is season 4/book 4? Watched some more of The Underground Railroad. It’s good, hard to watch because of how horrible the things happening during slavery were, but also really slow at times too. Friday night, even though it had not so great reviews, I went and saw Morbius. I actually enjoyed it.

  1. I hope you are having a wonderful time at your conference. It has to be better than being without your assistant at work (again). It’s really like you have no assistant the way they take her away from you so often. I like Quinn’s books, but some are pushing my limits for contemporary books. They really shouldn’t be over 400 pages. I’m just saying…

Well, she’s been out with her sick son for the past month and a half now. Not even being pulled away I’ve just been by myself. I love Quinn, but yeah, they have been getting really long! Which when I plan two days to read before I have to post a review gets to be an issue. I’ve got to start planning more time I guess. In the end they’re always worth it, but yeah, I agree totally!

It has had some great sessions, although not sure if I’ll be able to actually do them with how my school has been this year. Still hoping next year will be a lot different, as hopefully Covid gets more under wraps.

Well, I’ve gotten a lot of reading done, for one thing, which is nice! And some great sessions too.

I texted her today and she is back in the library! Yay! Just hoping she can stay the rest of the year. Thanks for visiting!

It’s been great so far! Can’t wait to start the Scalzi book. Probably after I get back from the conference.

  2. Hope the conference is going well! It looks nice so far, at least! Sorry you’ve been alone in the library a lot- though that sounds like it could be nice sometimes, too! The cover for Moon Smile is pretty, I hope you enjoy it, and the other new additions!

Being alone in the library would be okay if I didn’t keep getting so many things added to my plate that were not really library tasks. But that is the state of the education world these days. Thanks for visiting!

They do seem to be getting longer! You are right! I’m enjoying the conference. Unfortunately as great as the ideas I’m getting are, just not sure I’ll ever be able to do anything like that at my new school with the way things work there.

Yeah, it’s been a while for me as well. I was excited to hear she had a new YA, although I was unsure at first since it is kind of the second in a series. But since they’re companion books, not a sequel, I’m giving it a try!
