Amy Shepherd greets the one-year anniversary of her divorce by throwing herself a celebratory dinner of once-forbidden foods (frozen dinner from Trader Joe’s, no salad at all, and lots of dessert) and giving away all of her married-life possessions. The art director of Kids Press, Amy has been assigned to revise the story of Goldilocks, and she finds her own life reflecting a similar tale. Will she fall for a man who’s a little too old (but exciting), a man who’s a little too young (but awfully exciting looking), or a man who’s just right, at least as far as her friends are concerned? Or will she bring Goldilocks’ story—and her own—up to date with a little help from high-technology and the Goldilocks Planet theory? Can Amy resolve issues with her ex, her failing publishing company, plus her best friend’s quandary about working in a museum that’s been universally panned? Amy will have to decide how her own tale will end, all the while driving her beloved powder blue convertible through the streets of Santa Monica, where she has become known as the Girl in the ’67 Beetle, the only thing in her life that, so far at least, feels just right.

Linda Lenhoff is the author of Life a la Mode and Latte Lessons.

Praise for The Girl in the ’67 Beetle
“I am so happy to keep company with smart, witty, and lovable characters. I rooted for all involved and applauded every romantic and professional payoff that The Girl in the ’67 Beetle delivered.
Elinor Lipman, author of Good Riddance, On Turpentine Lane, and The Family Man

I enjoyed this book so much I realized I wanted to start dating again and joined an online dating site! The Girl in the ’67 Beetle is an utterly charming novel that zips along at a fun, brisk pace. You’ll love the wide range of funny, quirky characters and the witty dialogue throughout will make you laugh out loud time and again. What a delight!
Renee Swindle, author of Shake Down the Stars, A Pinch of Ooh La La, and Please Please Please

Author’s Top 5 Favorite Books

Laurie Colwin, Goodbye Without Leaving

Colwin is the queen of women’s fiction (and food writing), and all of her books are wonderful. My longtime fave is the story of a young woman coming to grips  with her rock-and-roll past, and how it contrasts with her life as a wife and mother, plus  what to do when an interesting man (who is not your husband) appears.Very funny, very moving.

Maria Semple, Today Will Be Different

No one writes humor like Semple, and her novel after Where’d You Go, Bernadette captured  me with the quiet story of a woman and her young son, and her quest to find meaning in life. Semple simply rocks. Best Dialog Ever.

Kevin Wilson, Nothing to See Here

You’ve probably heard about this book; let me assure you that Wilson’s novel is fun, fast, and a mesmerizing look at a woman at a crossroads in a highly unusual, let’s say highly flammable situation. No other male author I’ve found writes about women like Wilson does. All his work is literally wonderful—as in filled with wonder and amazement. I read this book with my mouth open the whole time!

Elinor Lipman, Then She Found Me

All hail Elinor Lipman, the goddess of humorous women’s fiction. This earlier book follows a young teacher who finds her birth mother (despite not looking for her), and learns they could not be more different, and that her own story is more complicated than she thought. Elinor is one-of-a-kind. Her books are like dear friends.

Renee Swindle, A Pinch of Ooh La La

Swindle’s work is always sweet yet gutsy, surprising, and laugh-out-loud fun. Although I’ll always adore Please, Please, Please, I love this story of Oakland baker Abbey Ross, who’s renowned for her wedding cakes but needs to get out of the kitchen and get a life, not to mention a pinch of ooh la la. Plus, I want to eat the cover. Swindle is as good as a writer can get, if you ask me.

  1. Thanks so much for hosting The Girl in the ’67 Beetle! It’s meant to be a purely fun escape with lots of humor–just what some of us need right now! Did anyone else have a classic car in their family that everyone loved, like Amy’s Beetle?

It sounds fun! My mom had a Nash Rambler when I was a kid. It was fun and we went to antique car shows or just to drive in restaurants to hang out all the time! Also, thank you for commenting on my blog, authors are my rock stars, so it makes my day when you stop by!
