Weekly Wrap-Up #49 – January 9th, 2022

Once again I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer) and with Stacking the Shelves (hosted by Reading Reality).

So, it was back to work this week. Fortunately we had Monday off, which was good because several school districts that didn’t, went ahead and canceled because roads still were icy and not in great condition in the morning. On Sunday night a Facebook Group I joined last year, Tugboat Cover Designs had a cover resale sale. They had a couple book covers that I really liked, because I like the more illustrated covers these days. And even though I keep saying I’m not going to do any writing this year, I gave in and bought them! Maybe having the cool covers sitting around will get me writing?

I also started trying to use a Google Spreadsheet made by Kate over at Your Tita Kate.

Tuesday was back to school, no students, just teachers, which was nice. I also had to take one of my dogs, Argyle, to the vet because he’s been sneezing and what they call reverse sneezing a lot lately. The vet listened to his heart and said it seemed everything was fine, he may just have a little bit of an infection and a cough (the reverse sneezing thing). She gave me some antibiotics for him to start.

Wednesday was the first day with students. And the nurse was gone in the morning, so my assistant had to go cover her, and then she ended up leaving early too because she had a sick kid. So my assistant basically spent most of the day as the nurse. Wednesdays are our early release day, which means the students leave at 12:50, and then we have professional development for the rest of the school day. Today was the annual lockdown/intruder safety training day. So we had a police officer show us how to set up special equipment the district has bought to help keep doors from being able to be opened once you lock and barricade them. And we talked about things to do or keep in mind that people often make mistakes with in shooter situations. It is sad we have to do this kind of thing, but that is the world today.

Thursday was about a normal day in the library. Unfortunately all week the local weathermen had been saying that Wednesday late evening into Thursday morning we were going to get snow and it would be so cold that schools might call the day off. No such luck. I know we only started back on Wednesday with students, but I was sure hoping for a surprise snow day!

Friday I was alone in the library for all but the first hour and a half. I’m assuming this is just how it is going to be with all the absences there are these days. Then I went home and enjoyed finishing up the book I was reading that was so good!

Saturday morning I got up earlier than I would normally, but my friend asked me to let her dogs out while she and her husband were on a staycation over night. Then we were supposed to have dinner together Saturday evening. We did go have Mexican at a restaurant and spent lots of time talking about family and work, and I was able to ask her thoughts on the online dating guy I’ve been talking to. It was nice to get someone who agreed with me about how some of his responses sounded.

Books Finished

The first three were read for reviews this past week. The fourth one was an audiobook I listened to because I love the author. The last one is a review book I’ll be posting on Monday.

New Books:

Physical Books:

Only one that I bought on the last day of 2021, so I’m not counting it as a new purchase for the year, lol.

Audiobooks:

I’d been interested in this one when I first saw it, then I saw it listed as a top read of 2021 on another blog, so I used my January Audible credit to buy it.

E-galleys:

Can’t wait to read this latest by Meghan Quinn! Will be posting my review on Monday! The second one is two stories, one by a new author I found and loved last year, Evie Alexander, loved her book Highland Games, so I signed up to review the two novellas in this book. The third one I don’t know for sure when I’ll get it read, but I get this author’s e-galleys sent to me all the time and I haven’t downloaded one in a while because I haven’t gotten them in time to fit them into my schedule, but I will get this one! And then I’m so excited for this next book in the Jay Crownover newest series. The last book is one that I couldn’t get into the first book in the series, but I’ve liked the other book I read by this author and this one is about cheese!! Well, you know, part of the story anyways, and I am a huge cheese lover. I wasn’t chosen to get the swag pack for the e-galley, sadly, but maybe I’ll do my own Instagram pic with cheese to chow just how much I am excited for it. lol

Free e-books:

Trying to just do this one!

What I’m Watching:

Of course finished up and loved season 4 of Cobra Kai. I had tried the first episode of Station Eleven and really liked it, but the second episode wasn’t anything like it, so I got bored. I attempted an older series this week too, The Man in the High Castle, and again I really liked the first episode, the second episode was really good too! I’m so eager to see where this will go.

Also excited for a new season of The Amazing Race which I didn’t realize they had been in the middle of filming when the pandemic started, and so the first three episodes were before everything. It will be interesting to see how they picked it all back up!

Games Played:

So I thought I’d add in what game I’ve been playing if I’ve been wasting time doing that, lol. Back when the whole pandemic started, I gave in and bought a Nintendo Switch and got sucked into Animal Crossing New Horizons. I basically completed that, and was bored so decided to get a new game, which I’ve been playing for a while. I think I might be getting close to the end of it, but still enjoying it for now! It’s called Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town.

Anyone else play either of these games?

I’m sharing the above because I love that Diana Gabaldon even gives permission to quit reading her own books if it isn’t working for you! I now do not feel guilt when I have to DNF a book that just isn’t working for me.

  1. I am glad you found a couple of book covers you liked enough to buy. Sometimes you have to jump on something like while you can. I hope the antibiotics are working and Argyle is feeling better. Looks like you have some good reading ahead of you. I like the sound of Julia Kent’s book. I like Diana Gabaldon’s comment about stopping to read if a person isn’t enjoying the book. Thank you for sharing! I hope you have a great week!

Argyle does seem to be feeling better! Yeah, I hope that I’m doing the right thing. Of course if I don’t get the stories written, I guess the last resort is to just let them resell the covers again! Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Poor Argyle! I hope the pup is feeling better. Snow days are a winter perk. I would do cotton on the window sill, wear my PJs inside out, anything to get that snow day. I bought the Animal Crossing expansion and have been losing tons of time there. The last update had so much content too. I bought Big Brain Academy to drive myself nuts with. Hope the covers you bought inspire you!

I started playing Animal Crossing with the latest update, but it just doesn’t seem to keep my attention anymore. 🙁 Yeah, I thought about the PJs inside out and putting a spoon under my pillow, but didn’t do it. It’ll be at least another week before another chance of snow as it is back up to spring like temps this week. Thanks for visiting!

Yep, that’s why I don’t feel guilty anymore. I just know there are so many books I still want to read as well as so many more always coming out. Thanks for stopping by!

Yep, lots of people out with Covid at school too. The new, sad normal is right. 🙁 Thanks for visiting!

  3. We got a bunch of snow and had a couple days off too. And it is sad we have to prepare for shooter incidents. Unreal.

    Mexican food sounds yummy ha!

I just finished S3 of Cobra Kai and am ready to start 4. Oh my gosh that show! I really liked the Okinawa sequence though- it was nice to revisit those characters from the second movie. 🙂

I loved the Okinawa part too! It is so good to get to see people redeemed, that’s the way the show really has been for the most part. Although still not quite sure about Krease. Ugh, no days off for snow for us. But my fingers are always crossed for at least one snow day every year, it’s like the only bonus we get as teachers. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. It’s crazy your assistant has to take over for the nurse! We got flurries one day but it didn’t stay. It’s finally raining over night tonight but it’s going to be cold again tomorrow and most of the week. I’m making soup and looking at soup recipes. I hope this week is better but I don’t think things with Covid will be better anytime soon.

We are having warmer weather this week. No precipitation that I know of. I think I need to look at some recipes and start making myself cook just one night a week. Instead of just easy microwave meals or hot dogs, etc. Maybe it will help me lose some weight too! Thanks for visiting!

    • Lisa Mandina

Same, I really liked the first book in the series so can’t wait to read the second one. Decided I’d go ahead and buy it. Thanks for stopping by!

    • Lisa Mandina

For the most part he seems to be doing better. Not all the sneezing anymore. But still the coughing. Meghan Quinn books are so good! Hope you get a chance to read one soon! Thanks for visiting!

  5. I am also back at school today, only teachers on our side as well. But the kids will be back on Wednesday. I’ve also spend some time in my library today, but tomorrow there are still stacks to do!

Have a wonderful year! Enjoy the library (we are blessed!) and happy reading!

This is going to be a full week back for us. Although I took Wednesday off for an appointment. Have a great week back!

I still can’t believe they make your assistant be nurse, that’s just so crazy. And before break I was there volunteering at my kids school when we did a mock lock down and my good friends son was in the bathroom when it happened and got “captured” by the “bad guy”, I just can’t. I’m extremely thankful that we always have a police officer at our elementary school since we have an extra room for him to have an office and his daughter-in-law is one of our kinder teachers :).

    • Lisa Mandina

Wow! They actually had that done with a kid? That is crazy! Yeah, we have police officers at our school. What bothers me a bit though is that my new school doesn’t have metal detectors for all the kids to go through, whereas my last school did. And I actually worry more about it at my new school, even though it is a suburban school as opposed to a more inner city school that I was at before.

        • Lisa Mandina

That’s good, but yeah, I’d have been freaking out myself! I’m with you, I miss those days too! Probably part of why I went into teaching was because of loving my teachers and school, but it sure wasn’t like that when I got into teaching. It might have been a little when I first started in the late 90s, and lasted a little into the early 2000s, but then things just got crazier and crazier.

    • Lisa Mandina

He seems to be doing better with the medication they gave me. So hoping he will just continue to get better. Yeah, the whole world of public education is just a mess with all this. I did hear on the local news here in Missouri even about how the Chicago schools were closing because of all this too.
