Weekly Wrap-Up #30

Once again I’ll be linking this up with the Sunday Post (hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer).

Honestly, this week was horrible. I can’t remember a single job I’ve ever had where I would have walked out on the first day if I could have financially afforded to. And what I hate is that it isn’t the people I work with. For the most part they are all really nice. Even my administrators have been so supportive and are actually jumping in and helping out with all the craziness of the technology stuff that has been turned over to be my job now. Well, when I say helping out, they’ve actually been kind of doing most of it while I try to get the online students sorted out and enrolled. All of the administrators have been so nice and asking how I’m doing and if there is anything they can do to make it easier. Honestly, they are doing a lot, and there’s really not much else they can do. But this job is so different from my last job. I’ve learned my lesson I think about the grass always being greener. In this case it was thinking I wanted back to Missouri, as well as the better salary. But at least at my last job I was doing library stuff almost completely. Yeah, I had to be in charge of a few study halls, and the mornings were crazy with 50-100 kids in the library every day. But I got to have teachers come in and I could work with the kids on what we had in the library, how to research, etc. Supposedly I’ll be doing some of that in the next week after hopefully all the laptop distribution stuff. However my library assistant has told me that the librarian who retired so that I got this job was doing the online learning stuff all the time, it took up most of her day. And right now I can totally see that. I’ve gone home every night, and cried in my car a little almost every day this week.

I need to quit dwelling though. Things can only get better, right? Excuse me for a minute while I knock on my hardwood floors to keep that last sentence from jinxing anything. Anyway, not much else this past week other than I got a hair cut and refreshed my color. Here is the before picture my hair dresser took with my attempted selfie later that night since she and I both forgot to have her take the after picture.

Books Finished:

The first book was a very quick and fun, yet tearful read. The second book was good, but took a little longer to read. Mostly because of how crazy my work was this week and not feeling like reading before bed because I was so tired.

New Books:

I didn’t buy any physical books, but I did get one that I won/picked for points earned on the Bookish First website. And they sent a finished copy instead of an ARC, so it will be going to my school library once I finish it! I didn’t realize this was part of a series in a way. All different retellings of classics. I’m excited for one that is listed as a retelling of The Great Gatsby, coming out in 2022.

E-galleys for Review:

Okay, so I really, really, really want a physical ARC of the middle one, I reached out to the publishers, I need it because I love all things BTVS, even have this whole shelf and a half in the picture below that is full of all my Buffy books. And I don’t care if the ARC doesn’t have the cover, I just want it so bad! But I also requested it on Netgalley as well as the one by Gretchen McNeil, another favorite author of mine. The last one above is for a blog tour that I’ll be posting my review on September 9th.

My Buffy shelves!

I also got signed up for an audiobook tour for a whole series, or at least the three that are already on audio. And I got the first book this weekend:

Free e-books

Only two this week, and one is actually just a sampler, first chapters of all the books in this next launch of the SmartyPants Romance books, which will be really getting my reading schedule packed the next two months!

What I’m Watching

So the last two episodes of the show Cruel Summer had some major twists and turns and whooooooaaaaaa moments. They definitely need another season though, because it left us with a lot of questions!

I also gave in and finally watched The Kissing Booth 3. Honestly, it left me a bit disappointed in the ending. While most of the movie had a lot of the same fun moments, I loved the flash mob scene, and also a lot of the emotional parts that tears streaming down my face, the ending was very unsatisfactory for me. I get that she needed to make the decision she did. And that’s great and all and a good example for girls getting ready to graduate high school and go to college and be on their own. But I need a real HEA. Even when I was a girl that age, I would have known that if the ending was a bit fantastical and unrealistic, that is okay, because it is FICTION! I hate that people think teens can’t separate fiction from their expectations of the real world. Yeah, there are some who can’t, but there are also a lot of adults who can’t, as we’ve come to see for sure this past year or so. I even did my very first discussion post on my blog in 2016 on this very topic HERE. But I digress. It was good, and you may be okay with the ending, and even if you’re not, it is a small part of the overall good show.

  1. I’m sorry to hear about the job situation! That does sound incredibly frustrating! I hope things get better and maybe you’ll be able to do some of the things you enjoy more as time goes on. It’s hard when you start a new job and it’s not what you thought it would be…

    Ooh new Gretchen McNeil?

  2. I believe it will only get better at work. The beginning of the year is always so hard (I don’t miss those days). At least you are getting support. Your color came out great! Love it!

I keep telling myself that part of the issue with this year is that we are coming back from the crazy pandemic filled school year we just got off of, and a lot of things are just not going smoothly for anyone because of that. And yeah, I’m very glad that my administrators seem to be so supportive so far! Love the new color in my hair, but of course I can’t do it the way my hairstylist did, so I’ll have to practice that a bit.

Unfortunately the assistant can’t do anything with the online learners because it has to be a certified teacher. They are going to hire someone to help with that though. She has been a great help with the laptop distribution though, since I haven’t been able to do as much with that as is needed. I’m looking forward to the holiday weekend for sure! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Oh man…I’m so sorry the new job is making you cry and sure hope it gets better soon! At least your hair is amazing! I love that color so much! Hang in there!!!!

    • Lisa Mandina

Thanks! I’m loving my hair color for sure. And I assume things have to get better from this point on, right?

I’m hoping it gets better. But technically I’ve been there since the beginning of August, and had a week and a half with nothing to do besides really work on the displays and such in my library. So much that is stressing me now I could have and would have worked on then if I’d only known. Oh well. Fingers crossed it is up hill from now on.

  4. That’s really unfortunate about your job and having to do more non-library related things than your previous position. It sounds like it’s a lot to take on and hopefully things will slow down a bit in certain areas so it won’t be so go go go. I’m glad that the people you work with and for are being super kind and helpful too! I’d definitely be feeling the same way as you, but I hope that things get better!

It’s definitely stressful, and even as the stress slows down a teeny tiny bit, there’s still the disappointment I feel in that I’m not doing what I thought I’d be doing.

  5. Oh no, sorry things have gotten off to such a rocky start at work, Lisa. I hope it’s just typical start of the year craziness and that it will quickly settle down into something more manageable. At least the administrators seem to be decent people and willing to pitch in and offer help.

The new cut and color looks gorgeous! That has to be a mood lifter! 🙂

The hair change definitely helped a little. And this week is calming down, except our tech guy just found out he has to quarantine because his son was playing with a boy who tested positive for Covid today. So I don’t even want to think about what craziness that is going to mean. Gah!

  6. Danielle Hammelef

I hope your job gets easier and I am feeling for you right now after reading how you cried after work all week. COVID is still getting worse and schools are starting around here this week, so we’ll see in 2 weeks where we are. I’d hoped to win So Many Beginnings, but chose to save my points and am loving Clash of Steel that I claimed instead. My mouth hung open when I opened the package and saw it was a finished copy too–gorgeous books in this series. I hope you are/will enjoy Bethany’s book.

    • Lisa Mandina

Yeah, I need to work on getting points again. It seems though there was one I wanted and was too late to get it last time I saved points, so I’ve kind of given up on that again. Hope we both enjoy them!
