Synopsis:

When Dillion Stitch left her hometown, she had no intention of going back. But when her brother gets into trouble, Dillion reluctantly agrees to return home to take her place at the family business.

Being back in Pearl Lake after all these years feels familiar, but also brings a few surprises. She’s quick to notice that someone new has shown up at the cottage next door. Dillion gets more than an eyeful when she goes to check out the newcomer and meets Donovan “Van” Firestone—her beloved neighbor’s grandson—in all his unclothed glory.

Having gotten off to a rocky start, it’s not long before they begin bickering with each other all over town. All that back and forth inevitably sparks an undeniable attraction. But Dillion’s family has issues, Van’s family resents him, and neither Dillion nor Van feels truly at ease in the small town. For these Pearl Lake exiles, home isn’t just where the heart is—it’s where things get complicated.

My Review:

Once again I’ve really enjoyed a book by Helena Hunting. I love her sports romances, and love her humor. But her more contemporary romance, without all the outrageously funny bits, is just as good. The characters are ones that you can’t help but fall in love with. So much depth and their own background issues brought to the stories. With what happened to Van at the beginning, being blamed for what has happened to his family’s charity, I kept guessing throughout the whole book as to who it could be that actually was behind all the trouble.

The clues kind of pointed to one person, but every once in a while there was a clue leading to someone else. Or someone else would do something to make you think maybe, just maybe. All the side characters were great as well, as to be expected in this author’s books. I loved Dillion’s family, even though they definitely had their own issues. Van’s sister Teagan was great, and one of the other members of his family redeemed themselves in a way for me as well towards the end. I also loved how Aunt Bee left money for her family, as well as all the little things she left to be found around her cabin.

I’m very glad to see that this is going to be a series. I would love to see a book for Aaron, hopefully matched with Teagan? And then maybe a book for Dillion’s brother? I know he has some things to work on, but I think he deserves a good love story as well. Not to mention Dillion’s friends need someone as well!

  1. I hope to read this. I have only really read the outrageous books by Hunting, but this actually sounds way more my speed. Sounds small town, and I like that, and the opportunity to get to know more of the characters via companion books.

Yeah, this is more like a contemporary romance. But I love all her books, so either crazy or like this works for me. She knows how to write characters that I like. 🙂

I couldn’t tell if this was classified as a contemporary romance and thereby possessing less humor, but it definitely sounded like it still had some good humor to it!

I don’t know that Hunting can write characters without some humor, but this was more contemporary than straight rom-com.
