Discussion Post: We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together or Series I Probably Won't Finish

Well, it has once again been MONTHS since I’ve done a discussion post. But I had something pop into my head just recently that I wanted to talk about. Even thought I’m not part of a challenge, I’m going to link up over on Feed Your Fiction Addiction.

It seems that quite often in the past I would luck out and the publishers would send me an advanced copy of a brand new book, that was going to be a series. And I’d fall in love with it, and post a review, and be so excited for the sequel. Sometimes I got luck and I’d get the next book. But so often I wouldn’t get the second book in the series, and so then I’d have to find it on my own and read it. The problem with that is that I tend to schedule all the review books I get, and others fall to the wayside to when or if I get time to fit them in. So I thought I’d share some of my series that probably will fall under this discussion topic. Either because I never got the second book, or sometimes they didn’t print or do advanced copies for the third or final book in the series.

Back when I worked at Barnes and Noble, and had a better manager than I’ve had in more recent years, they were awesome and saved these cool ARCs for me when they arrived. However since I got it through the store, instead of having a publisher send it to me personally, I was not lucky enough to get an ARC of the second book, and that meant I fell behind in reading the series. In fact I have yet to go back and read on in the series. I did really like the book though, and you can read my review HERE.

This is another one that I was lucky enough to get an ARC of from the bookstore where I worked. Which again means I did not get it straight from the publisher. And since they didn’t send a copy of the second book’s ARC to the store, I didn’t get that to read, and I’m behind, haven’t read any more in this series. But I did really enjoy it too! You can read my review of it HERE.

Yet another book that I got the first one in the series. This time I believe it was actually from the publisher. But then I did not get an ARC of the second book, and so, you guessed it, I still haven’t had a chance to read on. You can read my review of this one HERE.

This was another book that I got as an advanced readers copy from the bookstore where I worked. I did not get any more of the books in the series, and so I did not read on. You can read my review of this one HERE.

This is another that I was sent a copy from the publisher, not sure, but I might even have received two copies of this one! Then when book 2 came out, nothing. This past year when book 3 came out though, I got one in the mail. But since I hadn’t read book 2 yet, I saw on Twitter’s #booksfortrade that someone really wanted it, so I ended up trading them so they could complete their collection. I think some day I’d like to go back and finish this series though. You can read my review of this one HERE.

This is one that I got from the publisher, but it was a giveaway at BEA and so it’s not like they would have known to send me a copy of the second one. I did buy a copy of the second one, and it is still sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read. You can read my review of this one HERE.

Now those are all the series that I’ve only read the first book, so who knows if I’ll ever get around to reading the rest. A few other series that I’ve read all but the last one, and then the last one they didn’t do physical ARCs and I just didn’t make the time to read the e-galleys at the time are these:

Final thoughts:

To be fair, some of the series I listed above I may go finish or move on in at some point. If I ever get around to it. So tell me, have you read and finished any of these series? If so, do you recommend I don’t give up on them? Or would you say I’m probably okay if I don’t ever get back to them?

P.S. – While you’re here, you can go enter my monthly wrap-up giveaway HERE. And I also have a giveaway going on for my 100th Lisa’s Looking Forward To Post HERE.

And because the titles of my posts always come from songs, seems to be Taylor Swift songs the past few times, enjoy the video below!

  1. I abandoned the Red Queen series, because the second book was so tedious. I just didn’t like where the story went after a phenomenal start. The author was acting like a brat on social media too, so I grew disinterested. I did finish both TDC and Delirium. The endings were ok.

Good to know. I heard things about the sequel to Red Queen, I remember that. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I think it depends on the publisher. I have been lucky enough to continue almost every series I’ve started and loved, with either a physical ARC or a NetGalley copy. Orbit, Tor, DAW, and Saga and some I work with on a regular basis and can usually get a review copy of some kind. I can see how it would be tough when you get an ARC from work, though, unless you have a publicist contact.

Yeah, as I wrote this post, I realized that most of the time, except with Red Queen and Furyborn, I had gotten the first in the series at work, and not had it mailed to me. So that made me think a little more about it! Thanks for visiting!

  3. Great discussion post. I am so behind on so many series that I definitely don’t know which ones I’ll be giving up. I do agree some series are difficult to get back into or sometimes I forget what happened and so I just delete the second book from my TBR pile since I know that I’ll never get around to re-reading them again

I used to keep the whole series on my TBR, but now I’m only keeping the one right after the one I’ve finished and leaving the rest of the series off. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. This happens to me a lot with ARCs too because I’ll get the first book and then just forget to keep up with the series. I could probably get many of the sequels as ebooks (though I think maybe sometimes final books are harder to get a lot of time), so it’s mostly my own fault.

I definitely recommend the Three Dark Crowns Series, but I still haven’t read the last book! 🙂

I think I’ll try to finish the Three Dark Crowns series at some point. There was a teacher here at my school that has read it all and enjoyed it, so that was a good push for me as well as you saying it! Thanks for joining in!

I have the second book of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy on my actual bookshelf, so I do need to read it. You should check out the first book in Three Dark Crowns series, it is pretty good. Thanks for joining my discussion!
