Lisa’s Looking Forward To #60 – May 5th, 2020

Posted April 29, 2020 by Lisa Mandina in LLFT / 22 Comments

Once again I’ll be joining up with the Can’t Wait Wednesday posts hosted by Wishful Endings.  Back to a beginning of the month post, which means a lot of books! As far as I know these are still scheduled to come out next week, even though I know that some publishing may be getting rescheduled. Anyway, here we go, and it’s a long list, so prepare to do some scrolling!

From my ARC list for May 5th, 2020:

It compares it to a mix between Lost and Stranger Things, two shows I like! It’s also supposed to be done in a journal entry style, and I like books like that.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Lost meets Stranger Things in this eerie, immersive YA thriller, thrusting seventeen-year-old Sia into a reality where the waters in front of her and the jungle behind her are as dangerous as the survivors alongside her.

Sia practically grew up in the water scuba diving, and wreck dives are run of the mill. Take the tourists out. Explore the reef. Uncover the secrets locked in the sunken craft. But this time … the dive goes terribly wrong.

Attacked by a mysterious creature, Sia’s boat is sunk, her customers are killed, and she washes up on a deserted island with no sign of rescue in sight. Waiting in the water is a seemingly unstoppable monster that is still hungry. In the jungle just off the beach are dangers best left untested. When Sia reunites with a handful of survivors, she sees it as the first sign of light.

Sia is wrong.

Between the gulf of deadly seawater in front of her and suffocating depth of the jungle behind her, even the island isn’t what it seems.

Haunted by her own mistakes and an inescapable dread, Sia’s best hope for finding answers may rest in the center of the island, at the bottom of a flooded sinkhole that only she has the skills to navigate. But even if the creature lurking in the depths doesn’t swallow her and the other survivors, the secrets of their fractured reality on the island might.

Fractured Tide:Is and eerie and immersive YA thriller told through journal entries from a daughter to her father Unfolds through the eyes of a narrator who keeps you guessing until the final pages Is a gripping mix of suspense and horror; perfect for readers ages 13 and up

I’ve got an ARC of this, and it is next on my TBR list! I’ll probably start either today or tomorrow.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

A new swoon-worthy romance following a couple’s love story on the same date over four years.

Every May 7, the students at Coffee County High School take a class trip. And every year, Lulu’s relationship with Alex Rouvelis gets a little more complicated. Freshman year, they went from sworn enemies to more than friends after a close encounter in an escape room. It’s been hard for Lulu to quit Alex ever since.

Through breakups, make ups, and dating other people, each year’s class trip brings the pair back together and forces them to confront their undeniable connection. From the science museum to an amusement park, from New York City to London, Lulu learns one thing is for sure: love is the biggest trip of all.

I’m a bit embarrassed to say I haven’t read anything by this author yet, but this one really sounds good.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

In a novel-in-verse that brims with grief and love, National Book Award-winning and New York Times-bestselling author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness, and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives.

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people…

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the principal’s office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.

Separated by distance—and Papi’s secrets—the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered.

And then, when it seems like they’ve lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

This sounds like a perfect romance, and exactly the kind of book I’m really enjoying and reading almost one a day during this quarantine! I just need to get my hands on this one.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

When Graham Barnett named his diner The Tourist Trap, he meant it as a joke. Now he’s stuck slinging reindeer dogs to an endless string of resort visitors who couldn’t interest him less. Not even the sweet, enthusiastic tourist in the corner who blushes every time he looks her way…

Two weeks in Alaska isn’t just the top item on Zoey Caldwell’s bucket list. It’s the whole bucket. One look at the mountain town of Moose Springs and she’s smitten. But when an act of kindness brings Zoey into Graham’s world, she may just find there’s more to the man than meets the eye…and more to love in Moose Springs than just the Alaskan wilderness.

Perfectly creepy cover with the foreshadowing of the feather that it will have angels. Sounds like it could be a good paranormal romance!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

A terrible accident brings sixteen-year-old Casey Everett’s life to a halt—literally. Pronounced dead on the beach during the year-end harbor party, Casey’s sudden return to the living is shadowed by the drowning of her best friend, Liddy.

Eager to avoid the rumors that follow her, Casey returns home for the summer, only to find that Liddy won’t let her go. A series of violent nightmares and soulless whispers threaten to drive her mad, but when she watches a boy fall from the sky, she suspects she’s actually crossed that line.

That is until Red—an angel fallen to earth to regain his wings—takes her to Limbo: a place that exists somewhere between the living and the dead. Now, in order to save her best friend, Casey must learn to walk these mysterious and dangerous paths or else risk losing Liddy to something worse than death.

I loved The Selection series, even though I haven’t finished the daughter’s books yet. So of course I’m very excited for a new Kiera Cass!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

She’s captured the king’s heart. But who’s captured hers? #1 New York Times bestselling author Kiera Cass is ready to retake her crown as the queen of YA romance with this sparkling new duology.

The young king of Coroa has never been the type to settle down—that is, until he meets Hollis Brite.

Hollis has grown up at the castle, among the other daughters of nobility who hoped beyond hope that they’d catch the king’s eye. So when King Jameson declares his love for her, Hollis is shocked—and thrilled.

But she soon realizes that along with the extravagant presents and fawning attention, this new life brings outsized expectations—expectations that make her wonder if she’s really cut out for life as a royal.

And when she meets an Isolten stranger with the mysterious power to see right into her heart, she starts to wonder: Is there more to life outside the palace walls?

I am so excited for this one! Especially after reading Well Met just recently. I didn’t get picked for the tour on this though, so it’ll be a while before I get to it.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Moxie meets A Knight’s Tale as Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant.

Working as a wench―i.e. waitress―at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college.

Company policy allows only guys to be knights. So when Kit takes her brother’s place and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But the Girl Knight won’t go down without a fight. As other wenches join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they’ll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval―if they don’t get fired first.

Just sounds really good!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

At Eaganville School for the Arts, Speech and Debate is king. The varsity members of the squad are treated like heroes, and the coach, the irascible Joey Sparks, might as well be a god. But when new girl Sydney Williams, a perennial loser, joins the team, she has only one goal in mind: To infiltrate the team in an elaborate conspiracy and tear them apart from the inside out.

It sounds similar to some other books I’ve wanted to read before, so thought I’d add it to my list!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

With an instantly compelling protagonist who finds herself fighting for her life in the wilderness using her wits and resilience, THE WILD is a suspenseful original paperback page-turner with nonstop action and a heroine readers won’t soon forget.

FROM THIS MOMENT ON, YOU’RE A BEAR CUB. YOU’LL LEARN RESPONSIBILITY AND RESPECT. HOW TO SURVIVE. IT’S EASIER IF YOU JUST ACCEPT IT.
Dawn isn’t a bad person–she’s just made some bad choices: wrong guy, wrong friends, wrong everything. But she wasn’t expecting her parents to pay a boatload of money to ship her off to OUT OF THE WILD, a wilderness boot camp with a bunch of other messed up kids to learn important “life lessons.” It’s true that Dawn and the other cubs will learn a lot–but it’s not what any of them expect. Because what happens in the woods isn’t what their parents planned. Sometimes plans go very wrong. And this is one of those times. Suddenly Dawn is more scared than she’s ever been in her life. And you will be too.

  1. I read five of these, and out of that I had 2 5-stars and 2 4.5-stars. The other didn’t match my expectations, but it was still ok. I was happy to get a new Kenneally books, and this could possible be Acevedo’s best book (for me at least). War and Speech was so funny. I laughed a LOT as I read it. Tourist Attraction was a winner too. So fun. I cannot wait for the next book

Yeah, I am definitely intrigued by the Lost part. I noticed the author of The Wild had written mostly adult books it looked like. Thanks for visiting!

  2. I just added The Life and (Medieval) Times of Kit Sweetly to my TBR! It sounds fantastic! Four Days of You and Me is one I added earlier this week, and Clap When You Land is one I’m really looking forward to! I loved Acevedo’s previous two books (the audiobooks were phenomenal), and cannot wait to dive into her newest. I haven’t heard much about The Tourist Attraction, but it’s also on my TBR! Thanks for sharing, since TLAMTOKS was new to me. 🙂

    Lindsi @ Do You Dog-ear?? ?
