Lisa’s Looking Forward To #57 – April 14th, 2020

Posted April 8, 2020 by Lisa Mandina in LLFT / 32 Comments

Once again I’ll be joining up with the Can’t Wait Wednesday posts hosted by Wishful Endings.  The second week of the month and we still have a lot of books to look forward to. Maybe you’ll get some in your Easter basket? So hold on, and get prepared for a lot of scrolling below! As far as I know they are still scheduled to come out next week, even though I know that some publishing may be getting rescheduled. Anyway, here we go!

From my ARC list for April 14th, 2020:

Cool cover, and sounds interesting. Now one thing says it came out on April 4th, but another says April 14th, so it might already be out!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Nothing is more important than loyalty.
But what if you’ve sworn to protect the one you were born to destroy?

Tarisai has always longed for the warmth of a family. She was raised in isolation by a mysterious, often absent mother known only as The Lady. The Lady sends her to the capital of the global empire of Aritsar to compete with other children to be chosen as one of the Crown Prince’s Council of 11. If she’s picked, she’ll be joined with the other Council members through the Ray, a bond deeper than blood.

That closeness is irresistible to Tarisai, who has always wanted to belong somewhere. But The Lady has other ideas, including a magical wish that Tarisai is compelled to obey: Kill the Crown Prince once she gains his trust. Tarisai won’t stand by and become someone’s pawn—but is she strong enough to choose a different path for herself?

Definitely sounds really good, and I feel like I’ve seen some good reviews. Plus, I love zombie tv shows and want to go to a convention for the show The Walking Dead so bad! I mean, you know, when they start having that stuff again.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

June’s whole life has been leading up to this: ZombieCon, the fan convention celebrating all things zombies. She and her two best friends plan on hitting all the panels, photo ops, and meeting the heartthrob lead of their favorite zombie apocalypse show Human Wasteland.

And when they arrive everything seems perfect, though June has to shrug off some weirdness from other fans—people shambling a little too much, and someone actually biting a cast member. Then all hell breaks loose and June and her friends discover the truth: real zombies are taking over the con. Now June must do whatever it takes to survive a horde of actual brain-eating zombies—and save the world.

Sounds like this could be a really good mystery.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Everyone knows Emma. Neesha’s her best friend, Aiden’s her basketball star boyfriend, and Evan’s her shadow, following Emma’s every move. She stands out, which is hard to do at Redemption Prep, a school where every student has been handpicked to attend its remote campus in the forest of Utah. So when she goes missing in plain sight, everyone notices. And everyone becomes a suspect, especially at a school with strict rules: Don’t skip mass. Don’t break curfew. Don’t go into the woods.

Emma’s disappearance ignites an investigation, and Neesha, Aiden, and Evan all want to find her—for different reasons. But they each have their own secrets to hide, and not everyone wants Emma to be found.

As the search continues, the students realize that they’re not the only ones trying to hide something. Redemption Prep has secrets, too—secrets bigger than any of the students could have imagined, and Emma could be the key to finding out the truth… if anyone can find her.

This one sounds like it could have some really deep parts. And I do like dual narratives.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Told in dual narrative, This Is My Brain in Love is a stunning YA contemporary romance, exploring mental health, race and, ultimately, self-acceptance, for fans of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter and Emergency Contact

Jocelyn Wu has just three wishes for her junior year: To make it through without dying of boredom, to direct a short film with her BFF Priya Venkatram, and to get at least two months into the year without being compared to or confused with Peggy Chang, the only other Chinese girl in her grade.
Will Domenici has two goals: to find a paying summer internship, and to prove he has what it takes to become an editor on his school paper.

Then Jocelyn’s father tells her their family restaurant may be going under, and all wishes are off. Because her dad has the marketing skills of a dumpling, it’s up to Jocelyn and her unlikely new employee, Will, to bring A-Plus Chinese Garden into the 21st century (or, at least, to Facebook).
What starts off as a rocky partnership soon grows into something more. But family prejudices and the uncertain future of A-Plus threaten to keep Will and Jocelyn apart. It will take everything they have and more, to save the family restaurant and their budding romance.

One of these days I will read something by this author. They all sound so good, and the covers are always so striking!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea meets Frankensteinin Frances Hardinge’s latest fantasy adventure

The gods are dead. Decades ago, they turned on one another and tore each other apart. Nobody knows why. But are they really gone forever? When 15-year-old Hark finds the still-beating heart of a terrifying deity, he risks everything to keep it out of the hands of smugglers, military scientists, and a secret fanatical cult so that he can use it to save the life of his best friend, Jelt. But with the heart, Jelt gradually and eerily transforms. How long should Hark stay loyal to his friend when he’s becoming a monster—and what is Hark willing to sacrifice to save him?

Sounds like a good rom-com/chick-lit story.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Our heroine, a moderately successful TV writer in L.A., wants her life to be as sunny and perfect as a Hollywood rom-com: a cool job, a wacky best friend, and lots of age-appropriate hot guys just dying to date her. Instead, she’s a self-described spinster who is swimming in anxiety and just might have a tiny little brain tumor. So she turns to an unlikely source for inspiration: the eighteenth-century novelist and diarist Frances Burney, who pretty much invented the chick-lit novel.

A semi-autobiographical unromantic comedy, The Spinster Diaries is a laugh-out-loud satire of both the TV business and the well-worn conventions of chick lit―as well as the true tale of the forgotten writer who inspired Jane Austen to greatness. It’s an endearing and refreshingly honest testament to how one person’s life can reach out across the centuries to touch another’s.

This also sounds right up my alley! I’d enter the giveaway on Goodreads, but I have tons of this kind of book still sitting on my actual physical TBR shelves in my house.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

An office attraction becomes something more when they’re off the clock in this delightful romantic comedy by the USA Today bestselling author of Not the Girl You Marry.

State attorney Bridget Nolan is successful in all aspects of her life–except romance. After breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, she’s been slow to reenter the dating scene. To be honest, she has more important things to do like putting bad guys behind bars. But with her brother’s wedding right around the corner, she suddenly needs a date and fast. Lucky for Bridget, the legal intern is almost done with his program.

Matt Kido is dumbstruck by Bridget–total love at first sight–but there’s one problem. She’s totally off-limits while she’s his boss. But the moment he no longer reports to her, Matt asks her on a date. An impulsive decision takes them to Las Vegas where, as the saying goes, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Unless you put a ring on it.

This is another author that I need to read! Again, there is a giveaway on Goodreads, but I just need to be good!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

From the USA Today bestselling author of The Friend Zonecomes an adorable and fresh romantic comedy about one trouble-making dog who brings together two perfect strangers.

Two years after losing her fiancé, Sloan Monroe still can’t seem to get her life back on track. But one trouble-making pup with a “take me home” look in his eyes is about to change everything. With her new pet by her side, Sloan finally starts to feel more like herself. Then, after weeks of unanswered texts, Tucker’s owner reaches out. He’s a musician on tour in Australia. And bottom line: He wants Tucker back.

Well, Sloan’s not about to give up her dog without a fight. But what if this Jason guy really loves Tucker? As their flirty texts turn into long calls, Sloan can’t deny a connection. Jason is hot and nice and funny. There’s no telling what could happen when they meet in person. The question is: With his music career on the rise, how long will Jason really stick around? And is it possible for Sloan to survive another heartbreak?

So, only eight this week. Are any of these on your TBR, or have you already read them? If so, which do you recommend?

  1. How in the world do you feature 8 in one week! WOW! Kudos man. I do one a week and often run out of options to post that I’m excited about and have to go searching. 🙂 I hope you enjoy all of these! Thanks for stopping by my CWW earlier! Sandy @ Somewhere Only We Know

It’s because I go and look through Edelweiss, and keep track of what’s coming out when. In fact, I probably added these to my calendar months ago! 🙂 It’s not a good thing, it means I have too much I want to read! Thanks for visiting!

  2. I highly recommend Deeplight – I thoroughly enjoyed it and you’re right about the covers… Thank you for swinging by and have a great reading week.

  3. This is My Brain in Love is one I hope to read, and I am very excited to have my hold for The Happy Ever After Playlist. I really need that character to get her HEA. I was devastated by what happened in The Friend Zone, so, it’s important to me. I almost downloaded The Spinster Diaries too, but I had too many review books for that month. Sounds great though. I have read Not That Kind of Guy, and I liked it, but I liked the last book too. Matt really grew on me, and I loved Bridget in the last book. I thought I would be disappointed, because I wanted something else for Bridget, but then I loved where Christopher took the story.

Love to add more to other people’s TBR, since everyone always adds stuff to mine! LOL! Thanks for stopping by!

  4. I haven’t been reading much as of late, unfortunately, but it hasn’t put a damper on my adding books to my wish list. And your post here certainly is helping in that regard. LOL So many great titles. Girls Save the World in This One has a great title and sounds like a lot of fun. Not That Kind of Guy is on my wish list already. I can’t wait to read it. I hope you enjoy all of these when you read them, Lisa. I hope you are well and stay safe!

I’ve been reading more, well I was, then I got a book that wasn’t grabbing me, so I slowed down. Now I’ve got to get back on my reading a book a day! Although Animal Crossing is sucking my time now too!

  5. I’ve read Redemption Prep..the blurb sounds cool and interesting but the twist ending came out of nowhere. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
