Lisa’s Looking Forward To #28 – September 3rd, 2019

Posted August 28, 2019 by Lisa Mandina in LLFT / 36 Comments

Back to joining up with the Waiting on Wednesday Posts, and the Can’t
Wait Wednesday posts hosted by Wishful Endings.  There are a ton of books out next week that I’m excited for!

From my ARC list for September 3rd, 2019:

Sounds very unique, and I love stories told through letters and similar things like this is.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Co-written by sisters
Maika and Maritza Moulite, and told in epistolary style through
letters, articles, emails, and diary entries, this exceptional debut
novel captures a sparkling new voice and irrepressible heroine in a
celebration of storytelling sure to thrill fans of Nicola Yoon, Ibi
Zoboi and Jenna Evans Welch!

When a school presentation
goes very wrong, Alaine Beauparlant finds herself suspended, shipped off
to Haiti and writing the report of a lifetime…

You might ask
the obvious question: What do I, a seventeen-year-old Haitian American
from Miami with way too little life experience, have to say about
anything?

Actually, a lot.

Thanks to “the incident” (don’t
ask), I’m spending the next two months doing what my school is calling a
“spring volunteer immersion project.” It’s definitely no vacation. I’m
toiling away under the ever-watchful eyes of Tati Estelle at her new
nonprofit. And my lean-in queen of a mother is even here to make sure I
do things right. Or she might just be lying low to dodge the media
sharks after a much more public incident of her own…and to hide a rather devastating secret.

All
things considered, there are some pretty nice perks…like flirting with
Tati’s distractingly cute intern, getting actual face time with my mom
and experiencing Haiti for the first time. I’m even exploring my
family’s history—which happens to be loaded with betrayals,
superstitions and possibly even a family curse.

You know, typical drama. But it’s nothing I can’t handle.

Because who doesn’t love Loki and want more of his story?

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

This is the first of
three young adult novels from New York Times best-selling author
Mackenzi Lee that explores the untapped potential and duality of heroism
of popular characters in the Marvel Universe.

Before the days of
going toe-to-toe with the Avengers, a younger Loki is desperate to
prove himself heroic and capable, while it seems everyone around him
suspects him of inevitable villainy and depravity . . . except for
Amora. Asgard’s resident sorceress-in-training feels like a kindred
spirit-someone who values magic and knowledge, who might even see the
best in him.

But when Loki and Amora cause the destruction of one
of Asgard’s most prized possessions, Amora is banished to Earth, where
her powers will slowly and excruciatingly fade to nothing. Without the
only person who ever looked at his magic as a gift instead of a threat,
Loki slips further into anguish and the shadow of his universally adored
brother, Thor.

When Asgardian magic is detected in relation to a
string of mysterious murders on Earth, Odin sends Loki to investigate.
As he descends upon nineteenth-century London, Loki embarks on a journey
that leads him to more than just a murder suspect, putting him on a
path to discover the source of his power-and who he’s meant to be.

Could be a good story, sounds emotional.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Sisters April and Jenn
haven’t been close in years. Jenn’s too busy with school, the family
antique shop, and her boyfriend, and April would rather play soccer and
hang out with the boy next door.

But when April notices her older
sister is sad about staying home for college, she decides to do
something about it. The girls set off to revive a pact they made as
kids: spend an epic day exploring the greatest hits of their childhood
and all that Los Angeles has to offer.

Then April learns that
Jenn has been keeping a secret that could rip their family—and their
feuding parents—apart. With only one day to set things right, the
sisters must decide if their relationship is worth saving, or if the
truth will tear them apart for good.

Sounds like a very unique, alternate history type of story, yet very comtemporary-ish!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

What if America had a
royal family? If you can’t get enough of Harry and Meghan or Kate and
William, meet American princesses Beatrice and Samantha.

Two princesses vying for the ultimate crown.
Two girls vying for the prince’s heart.
This is the story of the American royals.

When
America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George
Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of
Washington still sits on the throne. Like most royal families, the
Washingtons have an heir and a spare. A future monarch and a backup
battery. Each child knows exactly what is expected of them. But these
aren’t just any royals. They’re American. And their country was born of
rebellion.

As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America’s
first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly
feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she’s breaking
the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn’t care much about anything,
either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her. And
then there’s Samantha’s twin, Prince Jefferson. If he’d been born a
generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne,
but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores
their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls
are vying to capture his heart.

The duty. The intrigue. The Crown. New York Times bestselling
author Katharine McGee imagines an alternate version of the modern
world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded–and
where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.

I always like historical fiction about lesser known times or events or even just how things were on a different side than the usual.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

In the final days of
the Việt Nam War, Hằng takes her little brother, Linh, to the airport,
determined to find a way to safety in America. In a split second, Linh
is ripped from her arms—and Hằng is left behind in the war-torn country.

Six
years later, Hằng has made the brutal journey from Việt Nam and is now
in Texas as a refugee. She doesn’t know how she will find the little
brother who was taken from her until she meets LeeRoy, a city boy with
big rodeo dreams, who decides to help her.

Hằng is overjoyed when
she reunites with Linh. But when she realizes he doesn’t remember her,
their family, or Việt Nam, her heart is crushed. Though the distance
between them feels greater than ever, Hằng has come so far that she will
do anything to bridge the gap.

I was definitely interested in this one, and then the publishers sent me a copy this week.  It’s a little late for me to get to it before it comes out next week, but I still hope to read it!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Cassie McKinney has always believed in the Hive.

Social media used to be out of control, after all. People were torn
apart by trolls and doxxers. Even hackers – like Cassie’s dad – were
powerless against it.

But then the Hive came. A better way to
sanction people for what they do online. Cause trouble, get too many
“condemns,” and a crowd can come after you, teach you a lesson in real
life. It’s safer, fairer and perfectly legal.

Entering her
senior year of high school, filled with grief over an unexpected loss,
Cassie is primed to lash out. Egged on by new friends, she makes an edgy
joke online. Cassie doubts anyone will notice.

But the Hive notices everything. And as her viral comment whips an entire country into a frenzy, the Hive demands retribution.

One moment Cassie is anonymous; the next, she’s infamous. And running for her life.

With nowhere to turn, she must learn to rely on herself – and a group
of Hive outcasts who may not be reliable – as she slowly uncovers the
truth about the machine behind the Hive.

New York Times
bestselling authors Barry Lyga and Morgan Baden have teamed up for the
first time to create a novel that’s gripping, terrifying and more
relevant every day, based on a story proposal by Jennifer Beals and Tom
Jacobson.

That cover, wow!  And it sounds very interesting, and is compared to some good reads at the bottom of the synopsis.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

The Age of Darkness approaches.
Five lives stand in its way.
Who will stop it… or unleash it?

For
generations, the Seven Prophets guided humanity. Using their visions of
the future, they ended wars and united nations―until the day, one
hundred years ago, when the Prophets disappeared.

All they left
behind was one final, secret prophecy, foretelling an Age of Darkness
and the birth of a new Prophet who could be the world’s salvation . . .
or the cause of its destruction. As chaos takes hold, five souls are set
on a collision course:

A prince exiled from his kingdom.
A ruthless killer known as the Pale Hand.
A once-faithful leader torn between his duty and his heart.
A reckless gambler with the power to find anything or anyone.
And a dying girl on the verge of giving up.

One of them―or all of them―could break the world. Will they be savior or destroyer? Perfect for fans of Throne of Glass, Children of Blood and Bone, and An Ember in the Ashes.

I haven’t read the author’s other book, but again, beautiful cover, and sounds like it could be a good one.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

The new gut-wrenching epic from the New York Times bestselling author of Sky in the Deep.

For
as long as she can remember, Tova has lived among the Svell, the people
who found her washed ashore as a child and use her for her gift as a
Truthtongue. Her own home and clan are long-faded memories, but the
sacred symbols and staves inked over every inch of her skin mark her as
one who can cast the rune stones and see into the future. She has found a
fragile place among those who fear her, but when two clans to the east
bury their age-old blood feud and join together as one, her world is
dangerously close to collapse.

For the first time in generations,
the leaders of the Svell are divided. Should they maintain peace or go
to war with the allied clans to protect their newfound power? And when
their chieftain looks to Tova to cast the stones, she sets into motion a
series of events that will not only change the landscape of the
mainland forever but will give her something she believed she could
never have again—a home.

Beautiful cover, and I’ve been hearing what I think are good things around the blogosphere.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two
years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city
of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could
steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are
burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The
war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most
dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her
growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be
made.

And love makes fools of us all.

I mean, the cover, and read the synopsis below, sounds so good. Again compared to some great titles!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

THERE’S MAGIC IN HER BLOOD.

Explosive
fantasy set in a world of magic and legend, where one girl must
sacrifice her life, year by year, to gain the power necessary to fight
the mother she has never been good enough for.

Perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas, Tomi Adeyemi and Black Panther

THERE’S MAGIC IN HER BLOOD.

Arrah
is a young woman from a long line of the most powerful witch doctors in
the land. But she fails at magic, fails to call upon the ancestors and
can’t even cast the simplest curse.

Shame and disappointment dog her.

When
strange premonitions befall her family and children in the kingdom
begin to disappear, Arrah undergoes the dangerous and scorned process of
selling years of her life for magic. This borrowed power reveals a
nightmarish betrayal and a danger beyond what she could have imagined.
Now Arrah must find a way to master magic, or at least buy it, in order
to save herself and everything she holds dear.

An explosive fantasy set in a world of magic and legend with a twist you will never see coming.

The cover reminds me a bit of Grim Lovelies for some reason.  But it’s another one that sounds good. And again has the comparisons to some great books.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

The Last Magician meets A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue in
this thrilling tale filled with magic and set in the mysterious
Carpathian Mountains where a girl must hunt down Vlad the Impaler’s
cursed ring in order to save her father.

Some legends never die…

Traveling
with her treasure-hunting father has always been a dream for Theodora.
She’s read every book in his library, has an impressive knowledge of the
world’s most sought-after relics, and has all the ambition in the
world. What she doesn’t have is her father’s permission. That honor goes
to her father’s nineteen-year-old protégé—and once-upon-a-time love of
Theodora’s life—Huck Gallagher, while Theodora is left to sit alone in
her hotel in Istanbul.

Until Huck arrives from an expedition
without her father and enlists Theodora’s help in rescuing him. Armed
with her father’s travel journal, the reluctant duo learns that her
father had been digging up information on a legendary and magical ring
that once belonged to Vlad the Impaler—more widely known as Dracula—and
that it just might be the key to finding him.

Journeying into
Romania, Theodora and Huck embark on a captivating adventure through
Gothic villages and dark castles in the misty Carpathian Mountains to
recover the notorious ring. But they aren’t the only ones who are
searching for it. A secretive and dangerous occult society with a
powerful link to Vlad the Impaler himself is hunting for it, too. And
they will go to any lengths—including murder—to possess it.

This one sounds soooooooo good!  I can’t wait to read it!  I may see if it pops up in the Audible Escapes program to listen to it even.  If I don’t give in and buy a copy of it first.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

All’s faire in
love and war for two sworn enemies who indulge in a harmless flirtation
in a laugh-out-loud rom-com from debut author, Jen DeLuca.

Emily
knew there would be strings attached when she relocated to the small
town of Willow Creek, Maryland, for the summer to help her sister
recover from an accident, but who could anticipate getting roped into
volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire alongside her teenaged
niece? Or that the irritating and inscrutable schoolteacher in charge of
the volunteers would be so annoying that she finds it impossible to
stop thinking about him?

The faire is Simon’s family legacy and
from the start he makes clear he doesn’t have time for Emily’s
lighthearted approach to life, her oddball Shakespeare conspiracy
theories, or her endless suggestions for new acts to shake things up.
Yet on the faire grounds he becomes a different person, flirting freely
with Emily when she’s in her revealing wench’s costume. But is this
attraction real, or just part of the characters they’re portraying?

This
summer was only ever supposed to be a pit stop on the way to somewhere
else for Emily, but soon she can’t seem to shake the fantasy of
establishing something more with Simon, or a permanent home of her own
in Willow Creek.

  1. Soooo many good books. I love the concept of sisters writing books. I also NEED Loki. Like now! Serpent & Dove and Lady Rogue are already on my TBR.

  2. So many wonderful sounding books! I am really interested in Dear Haiti, Love Alaine also. Butterfly Yellow is new to me, but I really like the sound of it. Quite a few of the others tempt me as well. I'm going to drown in books. Haha. I hope you enjoy all of these if you read them. Have a great week!
