Lisa’s Looking Foward To #18 – June 18th, 2019

Back to joining up with the Waiting on Wednesday Posts, and the Can’t
Wait Wednesday posts hosted by Wishful Endings.  This week there are only a couple on my list.

From my ARC list for June 18th:

This is a book of short stories that have food as a common theme.  Food always stands out in books to me, so I was interested as soon as I heard about it.  I’ve got an e-galley to read and will be reading and posting my review this Sunday.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

From some of your
favorite bestselling and critically acclaimed authors—including Sandhya
Menon, Anna-Marie McLemore, and Rin Chupeco—comes a collection of
interconnected short stories that explore the intersection of family,
culture, and food in the lives of thirteen teens.

A shy
teenager attempts to express how she really feels through the
confections she makes at her family’s pasteleria. A tourist from
Montenegro desperately seeks a magic soup dumpling that could cure his
fear of death. An aspiring chef realizes that butter and soul are the
key ingredients to win a cooking competition that could win him the
money to save his mother’s life.

Welcome to Hungry Hearts Row,
where the answers to most of life’s hard questions are kneaded, rolled,
baked. Where a typical greeting is, “Have you had anything to eat?”
Where magic and food and love are sometimes one and the same.

Told
in interconnected short stories, Hungry Hearts explores the many
meanings food can take on beyond mere nourishment. It can symbolize love
and despair, family and culture, belonging and home.

I like the part in the blurb that talks about a “knock-off” Narnia. That intrigues me.  Now this is supposedly the second in a series, and while I haven’t read what it lists as book 1, it doesn’t sound like they’re connected in a way you have to.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Brody Fair feels like
nobody gets him: not his overworked parents, not his genius older
brother, and definitely not the girls in the projects set on making his
life miserable. Then he meets Nico, an art student who takes Brody to
Everland, a “knock-off Narnia” that opens its door at 11:21pm each
Thursday for Nico and his band of present-day misfits and miscreants.

Here
Brody finds his tribe and a weekly respite from a world where he feels
out of place. But when the doors to Everland begin to disappear, Brody
is forced to make a decision: He can say goodbye to Everland and to
Nico, or stay there and risk never seeing his family again.

Final Thoughts:
Only two this week on my calendar, but I’m sure there are more.  Have you read any of these yet?  Are they
on your TBR?  And hey, while you’re here, you should go try to win some
of my ARCs from Cleaning Up My TBR Post
HERE. The US only giveaway is open till Friday at midnight, and this week I added some 2019 ARCs that can be one of your two choices.

    • I didn't either, but it looks like it was a separate story or could be read on its own. I'll be interested to read your review! Thanks for stopping by!

    • So far it hasn't caused me too many issues to have an empty stomach, but it has definitely made me curious about different ethnic foods! Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I'm not usually big on anthologies, but I've had my eye on Hungry Hearts because of the authors involved and because it's about food. I can't wait to read some reviews on it and see if it might be something I'd enjoy. I hope you love it!

    • Yeah, anthologies don't always get me, in fact it's taking me a bit to get through it. Too much stopping and starting, but the stories are short and sweet so far. Thanks for visiting!
