Discussion Post: I Will Always Love You or Do You Ever Begin to Get Over Favorite Authors?

Posted March 19, 2019 by Lisa Mandina in discussion post / 10 Comments

So once again I’ve set my goal to do four posts for the year, and I’d say I’m behind, but getting this done this month would mean I’m still on track.  Last year I had tons and tons of ideas for posts, but either forgot to write the ideas down, or then just never had time to actually do the post.  I ended up with a day on my blog opening up due to a book I thought I was supposed to review, but never got the egalley for, so I am going to get this post done now!

Obviously we all know where the title for this post is from.  If not, I’ll let you listen to the video below and get that line stuck in your head like it is in mine at the moment.

Lately, there have been authors that I have always devoured every book of theirs that I could find, but I’ve been maybe disappointed, or not as hooked completely with more recent books by them.  A few big ones I’ll name, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, I just haven’t been able to jump back into their books and be sucked in like I used to be.  In fact, I often read the synopsis on their new titles and think, eh, maybe if I have time.  And there was a time when I had to buy their books the day they came out and begin reading right away, often fighting with my mom on who got to read it first.

I’m not saying this doesn’t still happen, just that there are some authors that I either no longer grab their books immediately, or even lately there are authors that I haven’t been blown away by some of their latest books.

I’m not going to name names, because they are authors that I still love their books, they’ve written some of the best boyfriends you’ll ever find, and it isn’t all of the past books in the past year or two, just a couple.  But what do you do?  I don’t want to ever give up on some of them.  And I’m kind of now sad that I can no longer say I’ve read all of Stephen King’s books, or Dean Koontz’s books.

I know there are new books coming out by some of the new authors I’ve found that sound really like what I came to know and love about them.  So I don’t want to completely give up.

Do you ever have that happen?  Where there is an author you’ve devoured all of their books, and then either you no longer enjoy their new stuff, or it is too different from what you liked before?

How do you handle that?

Anyway, while you’re visiting, you should make sure to go enter my giveaway for a book from my Books for Trade shelves full of ARCs as part of my Cleaning Up My TBR Post HERE.

Also, this gif may not really fit with anything, but my favorite Tumblr which has Supernatural gifs showed back up in December with some new ones, so I had to share.

Thanks to All the Supernatural Gifs for these!

  1. DUDE, WHERE'S MY PIE???? (I love Supernatural!!!)

I am careful about this in my reading life. Even when I totally fall for an author, I seriously try to pace myself when it comes to devouring their backlist, because I don't want to burn out on them. And sometimes that leaves me not reading their backlist at all, but I've kind of gotten over that this year. Sometimes it may be that an author was the exact right fit for you during a certain point in your life but you no longer need them as much now. (Case in point: I inhaled pretty much everything Stephen King ever wrote during my teenage years, and while I still appreciate him and pick him up once in a while, I no longer feel the need to read his newest immediately. I've moved on, I have other authors in my life these days, and that's okay! His books fit who I was at the time and gave me what I needed then, and these days, I have different needs, literarily speaking!)

So don't give up on the old authors; just read them when you're ready. I read 11/22/63 a few years ago on the recommend of a friend and LOVED it, even though I hadn't read SK in years at that point. It was just the right time for me. 🙂

    • But these are authors that I have already read everything up until this point, and it is their newer things that I'm not loving anymore. So backlist, yeah, with new authors that doesn't always happen. Thanks for joining into my discussion!

  2. Oh my goodness yes! This has been a problem for me. Jennifer L Armentrout is a huge one for me. I loved loved loved her books and then I'm not sure if they took a nose dive or if I just have read so many books that it's hard to wow me.

Thank you for this post. Makes me feel less terrible about feeling this way about different authors books.

    • See, I have some of hers that I love. And some it takes me a minute to pick up, but when I do, I'm so mad at myself for not picking them up sooner! Glad I'm not the only one feeling that way sometimes! Thanks for joining in!

  3. Jennifer E Smith was a solid favorite of mine, but Windfall fell a little flat for me, and I waited to read her last book, Field Notes on Love, but I am glad I did, because it was really wonderful and reminded me of why I adore her books so much. But, I guess you can also outgrow an author or not grow with them too. If they go in a different direction or your reading tastes change, their books may not jibe with you any longer.

    • There are some I've kind of almost completely given up on, and then others, like the one I didn't want to name above, that I've been having hit or misses with lately, when before I devoured everything! Thanks for discussing with me!

  4. I think I will always love them in some way. You'll feel nostalgia. Is that love? I'm not sure. If I did love their old books it doesn't mean I will keep reading their new books and keep enjoying them. But yeah, I will always have a feeling of nostalgia but I might just stop reading their new books if I am not enjoying them anymore.

    • Yeah, I'll always be a fan or supporter of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, but it's so hard to give up on an author that you've loved in the past. Thanks for joining in!

  5. The author that comes to mind for me with this is Colleen Hoover. I LOVED her early books, all the way through Maybe Someday, and then … something happened. There was one book I honestly kind of hated. And then another that was sort of meh for me. Since then I've honestly been scared to read her books, so I keep putting them off (I've even bought a couple and haven't read them). The thing is, Colleen Hoover herself is an amazing, funny person and I love her on social media—and I have such amazing memories of those first books—I WANT to love her still. But I don't know if I really do. 🙁

    • Colleen Hoover is one I love, but sometimes a hit or a miss for me. Like, I tried to listen to Ugly Love, and couldn't get into it. Same with All Your Perfects. But I don't want to completely give up on her stuff because I ended up loving Without Merit and also It Ends With Us. Then there are some that wrote series I loved, and then branched off into others I loved, but some of their standalones just didn't grab me. It always feels wrong to say you no longer love someone's books. But I'm glad I'm not the only one! Thanks for talking with me!
