July 2018 Wrap-Up – And Summer is Now Over For Me – Back to School This Week!

Posted August 5, 2018 by Lisa Mandina in / 20 Comments

Summer has just flown by!  Between all of June feeling like I was working to raise money for my trip to ALA in New Orleans, and then July felt like it was the same thing, only for my trip to Book Bonanza in Denver.  So I talked about how exciting June was HERE.  And I already did a post for you about Book Bonanza HERE, so I’ll just share one picture from that in this post, the first MUST meet author I got to see there, Helena Hunting.

Alright, let’s get down to the stats:

# of books read July/year so far:  21/127 – With Goodreads goal still at the dropped level of 200, I’m now 9 books ahead.  Debating on bumping the number back up.

# of reviews post in July/year so far:  25/124 – I got caught up last month.  Only have two reviews past due from before August.

Challenge Updates:

Same as last month, still only one done, Book Blogger Woes.  Still need to do three more to meet my goal of 4 for the year!

My goal was 6, so I think these count to finish it up:

Worth the Risk by K. Bromberg
Bright We Burn (The Conqueror’s Saga #3) by Kiersten White
Dominate (The Harris Brothers Series #5) by Amy Daws

My goal is 12 for the year, had 5 by the end of June, but  no more in July.  Hopefully more the rest of the year?

1.  I haven’t finished any more of my novels.  In fact, didn’t even use July for the Camp NaNoWriMo.  I did edit and rewrite a few more chapters of my short story though.  So I feel a little successful.

2.  Goal 2 was reading books recommended by friends, again, haven’t done well with that.  🙁

3.  Cutting back on blog tours.  On the one hand I think I’m doing better with adding in my ARC reviews to the calendar.  On the other hand, I still have a few days where I’ve got more than one post scheduled.  But I feel like I’m doing better.  I’ve had a few days that actually have had nothing scheduled, so that feels good!

I will be cutting back on hours at my part time job at the bookstore with school starting back up this week, well meetings for teachers, then next week will be students.  Because of much-needed construction at the school this summer though, I have been unable to get into my library to do any work.  Not even in the weeks leading up to meetings.  My first chance to get in and see how the new circulation desk is, and get my library ready will be Monday morning.  Feeling a little overwhelmed and stressed by that.

And then my air conditioner seems to be messing up.  Could be my fault for spraying it down with the garden hose. But I only did that after people suggested the squealing noise it was making meant it needed that.  Yes, I turned it off, etc. And the first night it seemed to be working, after a bit of time to get back to going. But now, it’s blowing air. But not seeming to keep the house cool.  The thermostat says it keeps going up a degree every once in awhile even though it feels like cool air is blowing.  So, guess I’ll be spending the extra money I thought I had on fixing that.  No quitting the part time job for now.

Anyway, that is my July and what is coming up for me.  How was your July?  Are you a student, or do you have kids who are in school?  When do they start back?

    • Fortunately I got it fixed, but there went the little savings I had. Oh well. Hopefully school gets off better. The construction at school was not ready to go on Monday! Thanks for visiting!

  1. It's awesome that you got to meet an author, I think I'd be too nervous for that so it's nice to live these things through you guys! From your recaps I get almost all the best aprts of the experience without all the anxiety surrounding it, so thanks!!
Also, 9 books ahead, that's great!
ugh, summer is the worst, and having trouble with the AC… yikes.

This is the first summer I haven't had to study, so it's been weird. Job hunting sucks big time, I think I'd have better luck looking for an unicorn.

    • I don't know if I am any cooler than you'd be. But I've been to quite a few, doesn't mean I don't still stumble over my words and get all nervous every time! You should totally try to go some time. I'm glad my AC is working again. I'd be miserable without it. It's nice not studying, but yeah, job hunting sucks. Good luck to you! Thanks for visiting!

  2. Yay, you met Helena Hunting! Good for you, that's awesome. Looks like you're doing way better at your goals and challenges than I ever did. I actually have a lower Goodreads challenge than you even now and I spent a good long while thinking I wouldn't hit it. I think lower numbers are better and then when you beat it you get a feeling of success.

    • I think that I have to keep doing that with Goodreads. Keeping it where I know I can reach it, and then feeling awesome when I beat it! Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I'm so happy you got to meet Helena Hunting! Meeting authors is so much fun, but also makes me nervous because somehow my brain no longer forms intelligent thoughts. I hope your AC is working now!!

    • She was so nice too! Could have stayed and talked to her longer, but like you, I get all tongue tied! My AC is back on and cooling the house nicely. Thanks for visiting!

  4. No children, so I do not go to school, so i have none of that. I looks like you did a good or decent amount of reading. I hope this August did good. Sorry I am getting to you late and at the end of the month of August. I have had a bit of busy month and the passing of my baby boy Pumpkin (cat). If you like you can read my blog post here (https://nrcbooks.blogspot.com/2018/08/in-memory-of-my-precious-loving-baby.html) and check out my wrap up for August here (https://nrcbooks.blogspot.com/2018/08/monthly-wrap-up-august.html).

    • So sorry to hear about your Pumpkin! They are such big parts of our hearts, it hurts so much to lose them. I'm glad you were able to stop by and visit, I'll be sure to check out your August post!

    • ALA was so cool! Although I feel as a teacher, AASL would be more up my alley. Maybe next year I'll try to go to that. And Helena Hunting was so nice! Loved NOLA, wanting to go again after the book I just listed to. This summer did go by really fast, but then I was so busy! Thanks for stopping by!
